  • Patent number: 9068246
Abstract: A method of recovering aluminum is provided. An alloy melt having Al4C3 and aluminum is provided. This mixture is cooled and then a sufficient amount of a finely dispersed gas is added to the alloy melt at a temperature of about 700° C. to about 900° C. The aluminum recovered is a decarbonized carbothermically produced aluminum where the step of adding a sufficient amount of the finely dispersed gas effects separation of the aluminum from the Al4C3 precipitates by flotation, resulting in two phases with the Al4C3 precipitates being the upper layer and the decarbonized aluminum being the lower layer. The aluminum is then recovered from the Al4C3 precipitates through decanting.

  • Publication number: 20150173644
Abstract: An ophthalmic surgical tool has a marker positioned at a distal portion of the ophthalmic surgical tool. The distal portion of the ophthalmic surgical tool is inserted into an eye along with the marker to perform surgeries in the eye. An imaging device captures images of the fundus of the eye including the distal portion of the ophthalmic surgical tool. An image processor processes the captured images to identify and extract the marker from the captured images. The marker has a high-contrast feature in a visible light or infrared light range or other spectral ranges. Thus, the image processor may identify and extract the marker from the captured images. Indicators may be generated based on the marker and be overlaid with the captured or processed images of the fundus and displayed to a user to indicate surgical information to the user.

  • Patent number: 9054479
Abstract: Designs and techniques for constructing and operating femtosecond pulse lasers are provided. One example of a laser engine includes an oscillator that generates and outputs a beam of femtosecond seed pulses, a stretcher-compressor that stretches a duration of the seed pulses, and an amplifier that receives the stretched seed pulses, amplifies an amplitude of selected stretched seed pulses to create amplified stretched pulses, and outputs a laser beam of amplified stretched pulses back to the stretcher-compressor that compresses their duration and outputs a laser beam of femtosecond pulses. The amplifier includes a dispersion controller that compensates a dispersion of the amplified stretched pulses, making the repetition rate of the laser adjustable between procedures or according to the speed of scanning. The laser engine can be compact with a total optical path of less than 500 meters, and have a low number of optical elements, e.g. less than 50.

  • Patent number: 9011418
Abstract: A system and method for determining an optimal position of an eye relative to an ophthalmic device are disclosed. One embodiment of the method includes receiving data comprising an image of a surface of an eye with the eye at a first position relative to an ophthalmic device. An edge feature in the image is located, and a sharpness calculation on the edge feature is performed using a predetermined algorithm to yield a sharpness value. The eye surface is then adjusted to a second position relative to the ophthalmic device, and the previous steps are repeated until the sharpness value is maximized, which is an indication that an optimal eye position has been achieved. An embodiment of the system includes a processor and a software package executable by the processor, the software package adapted to perform the calculations as above. Means are also provided for adjusting the eye surface to a second position relative to the ophthalmic device.
