Abstract: A method of delivering a substance into an eye includes recognizing a connection between a tip segment and a limited reuse assembly; receiving dosage information from the tip segment; activating a temperature control device to alter a temperature of a substance to be delivered into an eye; receiving temperature information from a thermal sensor; using the temperature information to control the temperature control device; receiving an input indicating that the substance is to be delivered; and based on the dosage information, controlling an actuator to move a plunger to deliver the substance.

Abstract: The invention concerns in one embodiment a method for treating glaucoma or elevated IOP in a patient comprising administering to the patient an effective amount of a composition comprising an agent that modulates PAI-1 binding to vitronectin. In another embodiment, the invention concerns a method of manufacturing a compound to be used as a treatment for glaucoma or elevated IOP comprising providing a candidate substance suspected of modulating PAI-1 binding, selecting the compound by assessing the ability of the candidate substance to decrease the amount of active PAI-1 in the trabecular meshwork of a subject suffering from glaucoma or elevated PAI-1, and manufacturing the selected compound.

Abstract: A surgical system that is able to sense the onset of an occlusion or other surgical event as well as when an occlusion breaks. To help avoid overheating of the tip, the system of the present invention predicts the temperature of the eye using irrigation flow rate and reduces the power to the handpiece automatically if an overheating situation is predicted. Alternatively or in addition, the system of the present invention monitors the power drawn by the handpiece, which is indicative of the cutting load on the tip, and automatically adjusts the power or stroke of the tip to compensate for increased loads on the tip.

Abstract: An injection device includes a dispensing chamber, a plunger, a controller, a memory device resistant to sterilization, and a housing at least partially enclosing the dispensing chamber and the plunger. The dispensing chamber has an inner surface and an outer surface. The inner surface defines a cavity for receiving a quantity of a substance. The plunger is engaged with the inner surface of the dispensing chamber, is capable of sliding in the cavity of the dispensing chamber, and is fluidly sealed to the inner surface of the dispensing chamber. The controller controls the operation of the injection device. The controller reads dosage data from the memory device and operates the injection device to deliver a dosage corresponding to the dosage data.

Abstract: The invention provides methods for treating and/or preventing ocular disorders associated with increased intraocular pressure comprising administering a bradykinin B2 receptor agonist to a patient in need thereof.
Abstract: A pressurized infusion device has a flexible band with first and second ends, a curved base, and a bag containing fluid. The bag is located between the flexible band and the curved base. The second end of the flexible band is coupled to a shaft. A motor is also coupled to the shaft. The motor is actuated to turn the shaft and produce tension in the band thereby changing the fluid pressure in the bag.
Abstract: The present invention concerns a method for diagnosing or monitoring elevated intraocular pressure or glaucoma in a patient comprising providing a biological sample from the patient and measuring the expression level of a superoxide dismutase-2 (SOD-2) gene in the biological sample. The present invention also concerns methods for treating glaucoma or elevated intraocular pressure in a patient comprising administering to a patient an effective amount of an agent that modulates SOD-2 expression or SOD-2 activity.

Abstract: Antagonists of cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate/insulin-like growth factor-II receptor are provided for attenuation of CTGF signaling in a method of down-regulation of receptor signaling and downstream decreased signaling of connective tissue growth factor in ocular disorders involving inappropriate CTGF signaling. Ocular disorders involving inappropriate CTGF signaling include ocular hypertension, glaucoma, glaucomatous retinopathy, optic neuropathy, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, choroidal neovascularization, and proliferative vitreoretinopathy, for example. Such disorders are treated by administering antagonists of the present invention.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for lowering IOP and/or providing neuroprotection are disclosed. The compositions and methods are particularly directed to the use inhibitors of Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK) to lower IOP and/or provide neuroprotection.
Abstract: Methods of making 1-alkylindazoles are described. The methods involve reacting a 2-alkylaminobenzonitrile with a nitrosating agent followed by reduction-cyclization of the resulting nitrosamine to form a 1-alkyl-3-aminoindazole. The 1-alkyl-3-aminoindazole can be deaminated to form a 1-alkylindazole which ultimately can be used to form desired indazoles which are preferably pharmaceutically active products. The process of the present invention further permits the formation of enantiomerically enriched or pure indazoles such as aminoalkyl indazoles.

Abstract: Ophthalmic pharmaceutical compositions containing tobramycin, dexamethasone and deacetylated xanthan gum are described. The compositions provide longer ocular retention for enhanced ocular bioavailability of tobramycin and dexamethasone. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions also provide for improved suspension of dexamethasone. The concentration of ionizable species in the compositions is controlled so as to prevent precipitation of the xanthan gum as a result of ionic interactions between tobramycin and xanthan gum, while allowing for a restoration of viscosity upon topical application of the compositions to the eye. The use of deacetylated xanthan gum is disclosed, so as to avoid formulation instability caused by pH drift during storage.
Abstract: A smart connector system includes a machine connector disposed on a face of a surgical machine, an illumination ring located on the face of the surgical machine and disposed around a periphery of the machine connector, an RFID reader antenna located in close proximity to the machine connector and the face of the surgical machine, and an accessory connector adapted to couple with the machine connector. The accessory connector has an RFID tag antenna and is capable of attaching a tool to the surgical machine. When the accessory connector is brought within close proximity to the machine connector, a communications connection is established between the RFID tag antenna and the RFID reader antenna.
