  • Patent number: 6559071
Abstract: A process for forming a nanoporous silica dielectric coating on a substrate. A substrate containing a deposited film is suspended within a sealable hotplate, while remaining free of contact with the hotplate. The hotplate is sealed and an inert gas is flowed across the substrate. The hotplate is heated to a temperature of from about 350° C. or higher, and the substrate is forced to contact the heated hotplate. The substrate is heated for a time that sufficiently removes outgassing remnants from the resultant nanoporous dielectric coating.

  • Patent number: 6555945
Abstract: Actuators are described that operate as a result of double-layer charge injection in electrodes having very high gravimetric surface areas and gravimetric capacitances. The actuator output of the actuators may be a mechanical displacement that can be used to accomplish mechanical work. As a result of the non-faradaic process and the actuator materials utilized, such as carbon nanotubes, the actuators have improved work capacity, power density, cycle life, and force generation capabilities. Other benefits include low voltage operation and high temperature performance. The actuators also convert a mechanical energy input to an electrical energy output. The actuators may be used to control either thermal, electrical or fluid transport or cause either the switching, phase shift, or attenuation of electromagnetic radiation.

  • Patent number: 6553816
Abstract: A system and method for obtaining engine diagnostic and prognostic information utilizing current, time and crank position data obtained from the starter motor during the starting of an engine and represented as a starter motor current waveform. The time domain waveform is transformed to the spatial domain. Thereafter, the spatial waveform is deconvolved into its constituent components using known digital signal processing, such as Fourier Transformations, and along with derived engine parameters provide engine status and diagnostic information. Weibull techniques may be used to further process the engine status and diagnostic information to improve accuracy.

  • Publication number: 20030077474
Abstract: A process is disclosed for brazing plate/plate and plate/fin multi-channeled structures using an amorphous brazing foil as a brazing filler metal between the parts in order to form uniform joints having optimal dimensions, shape and strength. The parts are assembled in an unconstrained stack, and a controlled load is applied to the top of the stack. The stack is then heated to a temperature at which the interlayer melts and reacts with the base metal to form the joints. The stack is cooled resulting in a brazed structure having the desired characteristics, wherein the brazed joints are optimally formed and the strength of the structure is equal to the underlying strength of the base metal.
