  • Patent number: 6832438
Abstract: A cutting device includes (i) a housing having first and second separable portions, the first portion having a locking aperture, the second portion having an attachment aperture, and (ii) a locking apparatus for removably locking the first and second portions of the housing. The locking apparatus includes an attachment portion for being fixedly attached in the attachment aperture, and a locking arm adapted to be releasably locked into the locking aperture. The attachment aperture and locking aperture are correspondingly positioned so that the locking arm becomes aligned with the locking aperture when the first and second portions of the housing are aligned for assembly. The housing may be constructed of metal, and the locking apparatus constructed of plastic. The locking apparatus may also include a return spring and blade carrier integrally molded therewith.

  • Patent number: 6530098
Abstract: A taping knife includes a continuous shaft having a blade on a first end thereof, and a hammer on a second end thereof. A handle surrounds the shaft with the blade extending from one end thereof, and the hammer extending from the other end thereof. The handle preferably is constructed with a molded inner core and a soft molded rubber overlay. The hammer includes a hammering surface generally perpendicular to a central axis of the handle. The inner core is preferably constructed of a molded thermoplastic, and the overlay is preferably constructed of an injection molded rubber. The handle may include a bit storage slot for receiving and storing a screwdriver bit. The overlay may include a plurality of flexible fingers adjacent to the bit storage slot for securing a screwdriver bit in the slot. The hammer may include a sleeve for receiving a screwdriver bit with a working portion of the bit extending from the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6487778
Abstract: An improved automatically retractable cutting device includes (a) a housing having a guide slot, with one or more notches disposed in the guide slot, (b) a return spring within the housing, and (c) a blade carrier disposed within the housing and biased by the return spring. The blade carrier includes a thumb piece extending through the guide slot, the thumb piece having a protuberance adapted to at least partially frictionally engage the notch during movement of the thumb piece along the guide slot to enable the thumb piece to be held in position adjacent to the notch with reduced force. Each notch may include a forward direction ramping surface, whereby reduced force is required to prevent further blade extension, and/or a reverse direction ramping surface, whereby reduced force is required to prevent blade retraction. Each ramping surface is preferably angled at less than ninety degrees.

  • Patent number: 6058607
Abstract: An automatically retractable utility knife includes a housing and a blade carrier having a molded return spring, which may be integral with the blade carrier. The return spring is serpentine shaped and constructed of a resilient thermoplastic. The housing includes front and rear guide slots, with the blade carrier having a thumb piece extending through the front guide slot and a thumb piece extending through the rear guide slot for enabling the cutting device to be used by right or left-handed persons. The blade carrier may include a snap-off extension for limiting forward travel of the blade carrier with the snap-off extension in place. A method of manufacturing a utility knife includes the steps of providing a housing having an interior adapted to receive either an indexed blade carrier or an automatically retractable blade carrier, and assembling the housing with either an indexed blade carrier or an automatically retractable blade carrier therein.

  • Patent number: 5930925
Abstract: A display apparatus for an object to be displayed, e.g., a brush, in which the object includes a slot on its external surface. A display card is sized to be inserted into the slot and is removably retained within the slot. Adhesive, or a friction fit, is preferably used to removably attach the display card to the object. In one embodiment, the object to be displayed includes at least one protuberance extending partially into the slot. The display card is sized to be frictionally retained in the slot by the protuberance. The display card may include a folded over portion for increasing the thickness of the display card when it is inserted into the slot. The display card is shaped to correspond to a shape of the object to be displayed when the display card is inserted into the slot, and includes a hole therethrough for enabling the display card to be hung from a display rack.

  • Patent number: 5809605
Abstract: A squeegee assembly includes i) a handle having a male blade-mounting portion; and ii) a dual-extruded squeegee blade having a resilient squeegee portion and a channel. The channel is constructed of a generally semi-rigid material and is sized and shaped to be slidably mounted to the male blade-mounting portion of the handle. The handle is constructed of a molded thermoplastic or a stamped metal and includes a gripping area. The dual-extruded squeegee blade is constructed of compatible vinyls, elastomers, or other thermoplastics. The squeegee portion is chevroned, with the chevron defining a pair of cleaning members, so that the squeegee blade is reversible. In an alternative embodiment, the squeegee blade includes a sponge extruded therewith. In a further alternative embodiment, the squeegee blade includes a second channel extruded therewith and an extruded sponge adapted to be slidably insertable into the second channel.

  • Patent number: 5638727
Abstract: A hand-held driver for use with removable driving bits, such as screwdriver or nut-driver bits, is disclosed. The driver includes a handle adapted to be hand-held, and a shaft. The shaft has a proximal end secured to the handle, and a distal end with a recess sized and shaped to enable a driving bit to be insertable therein and removable therefrom with a driving end of the driving bit extending from the shaft. A retaining ring circumferentially surrounds the shaft toward the distal end and is closely sized thereto. The retaining ring has an open end adjacent to the distal end that has a size and shape corresponding to the recess in the shaft. The retaining ring enables the shaft of the driver to be constructed of lesser strength materials. The handle and shaft are constructed of a thermoplastic, and are preferably integrally constructed. The retaining ring is constructed of stainless steel or another high tensile strength material. A handle for the driver includes one or more bit-receiving slots.
