Patent number: 9131025Abstract: Techniques described herein provide a system and methods for adding latency to improve the perceived performance of computing devices. For instance, the techniques may calculate transaction latencies for a given session based on the time between sending requests for content and receiving the requested content. The calculated latencies may be aggregated or averaged in such a way that a specific latency may be selected for improving the perceived performance. A client device may then render subsequent content based on the selected latency or a server may serve subsequent content based on the selected latency. This artificial addition of latency may enhance the user experience by creating a more consistent environment.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2013Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ethan Z. Patent number: 9131476Abstract: Methods and systems for optimizing voice call setup times for user devices. A user device that is registered to a packet switched network and in an idle state receives a command to establish a voice call. The user device selects a legacy cell of a circuit switched network. The user device then establishes a radio connection with the selected legacy cell without first establishing a radio connection with a serving cell of the packet switched network.Type: GrantFiled: August 16, 2011Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Kiran K. Patent number: 9128753Abstract: Technologies are described herein for establishing a secure tunnel infrastructure between host computers in a hybrid network environment. A first network tunnel is established between a border device in a first network and a border device in a second network. A second network tunnel is established between a first host computer in the first network and the border device in the first network. Similarly, a third network tunnel is established between the border device in the second network and a second host computer in the second network. The networking infrastructures of the first and second networks are then configured so that network packets from the first host computer arriving at the border device in the first network through the second network tunnel are sent through the first network tunnel to the border device in the second network, and then through the third network tunnel to the second host computer.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2012Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Pradeep Vincent

Patent number: 9129179Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for identifying objects within images. Analysis are performed, comparing metadata, tags, and similarity of images, to determine trends and similarity. Based on these trends and similarities, metadata and tags are copied and generated, with the associated images then being more closely associated with one another. These images can then be organized in more meaningful and useful formats. The associated objects can also be used to provide a user with information about an object located in an image provided by a user, where the information can include location, pricing, availability, or other such information that can be determined from the metadata, tags, and other information associated with the images.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2012Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Peter C. Patent number: 9128718Abstract: Power consumption while in a low power suspend mode is enhanced by placing a portion of suspend and resume instructions into internal rewriteable memory, such as internal random access memory (“IRAM”). During entry into suspend, control is transferred from instructions stored in an external memory to instructions stored within the internal rewriteable memory. These instructions are configured to reduce power consumption of the external memory by reducing a slew rate, drive strength, and so forth. Upon awakening from suspend, the instructions within the internal rewriteable memory place the external memory back to an operational state and control passes back to the instructions stored within external memory.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2010Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Manish Lachwani, David Berbessou

Patent number: 9131623Abstract: Devices and methods for constructing low-profile, minimal-thickness electronic devices using existing production techniques are disclosed in this application. An electronic component and interposer form a sub-assembly. The sub-assembly is placed in an aperture in a circuit board with the interposer providing interconnections between the electronic component and the circuit board. The circuit board is coupled to the electronic component at least by one or more fluidic channels included in the interposer. Patent number: 9128703Abstract: A quiescent doze mode permits significant reductions in power consumption and dissipation by electronic devices while idle without producing adverse latencies to users. Device drivers communicate predictions as to future use of their coupled devices with a kernel. The kernel may then enter a quiescent doze mode comprising gating clocks on the processor and peripherals, disabling interrupts, and executing a wait for interrupt. Dynamically increasing timer interrupt intervals to significant fractions or multiples of a second further increases the percentage of time the device remains in quiescent doze mode.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2008Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Manish Lachwani, David Berbessou

Patent number: 9131150Abstract: The subject technology provides embodiments for tracking a user's face/head (or another object) using one or more cameras provided by a computing device. Embodiments implement exposure sweeping based on an average intensity of a current scene to a target intensity for a given image. If a face is not detected, an exposure duration and/or gain may be adjusted and the face detection is performed again. Once the face is detected, an average intensity of a virtual bounding box surrounding the detected face is determined and exposure sweeping may be performed solely within the virtual bounding box to reach a target intensity. When the average intensity is within a predetermined threshold of the target intensity, the detected face may be at an optimal exposure. Embodiments also provide for switching to another camera(s) of the computing device when not detecting a face in the image upon performing a full exposure sweep.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2014Date of Patent: September 8, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Stephen Vincent Mangiat, Ambrish Tyagi

Patent number: 9120621Abstract: This disclosure describes a device and system for verifying the content of items in a bin of an inventory holder within a materials handling facility. In some implementations, a bin content verification apparatus may be positioned within the materials handling facility and configured to capture images of inventory holders that include bins as the inventory holders are moved past the apparatus by mobile drive units. The images may be processed to determine whether the content included in the bins has changed since the last time images of the bins were captured. A determination may also be made as to whether a change to the bin content was expected and, if so, if the determined change corresponds with the expected change.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 2014Date of Patent: September 1, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: James Christopher Curlander, Jules Cook Graybill, Marshall Friend Tappen, Barry James O'Brien

Patent number: 9122917Abstract: Motions and gestures can be detected using a video capture element of a computing device even when the video capture element is not able to accurately capture the motion. Information about the background in the image information can be determined, and the way in which that background information is occluded can be used to determine the motion. In at least some embodiments, edges are detected in the video information. Images of foreground objects can then be isolated from edges of background images by comparing histograms of multiple frames of video. The remaining data is indicative of a direction and speed of motion, which can be used to infer a determined gesture even though that gesture was not visible in the captured video information.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2014Date of Patent: September 1, 2015Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Volodymyr V.
