  • Patent number: 5158471
Abstract: A power connector for interconnecting power between printed circuit boards (12, 24) includes plug and receptacle contacts (40, 70) linked to signal connector halves (16, 28) alos mounted on the circuit boards such that the plug and receptacle contacts intermate along a given axis as the connector halves are intermated. The receptacle contact (70) includes an array of resilient contact fingers (80-82) spaced apart and staggered to engage the plug contact (40) upon mating along the given axis at given points to reduce insertion forces, preclude undue wear of the plug contact from repeated engagements while carrying sufficient current to effect a power transfer from one board to another board. The contacts further include a plurality of posts (48, 74, 76) spaced apart to distribute current to the thin conductive traces of boards to preclude undue resistance heating of such traces in the circuits defined thereby.

  • Patent number: 5155907
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus for and method of aligning the terminals of a group of connectors in side by side abutting relationship with tooling for terminating wires to the terminals thereof. The group of connectors is placed in a track with the first connector against a stop. A plurality of vertically reciprocal guide blades are arranged adjacent the track and are moved upwardly, one at a time, the first engaging the first connector and positioning it relative to the termination tooling followed by subsequent blades engaging the other connectors. These subsequent engagements occur one at a time in sequential order with increasing distance from the stop. When all connectors are positioned by engaging guide blades, wires are terminated to the connector terminals and the guide blades moved out of engagement so that the completed connector assembly can be removed and the process repeated.

  • Patent number: 5155325
Abstract: Invention is directed to a method of metallurgically bonding a layer of a first material, such as gold, to the surface of a second material, such as copper, by the use of the driving force of the energy from a pulsed laser. The method comprises the steps of selecting a thin polymeric film, where said polymer is characterized by a high optical coefficient of absorption at the wavelength of said laser, and applying to said polymeric film a thin layer of said first material for bonding to the second material. The second material is placed in close proximity to the thin layer of the first material. Intermediate the laser and the target a rotating optical scanner is provided to intercept the beam of the laser prior to directing the focused beam thereof toward the polymeric film. The repetition rate of the laser is synchronized with the rotating optical scanner to cause the focused beam of the laser to move across said polymeric film at a velocity less than the velocity of sound through the material.

  • Patent number: 5152051
Abstract: A hand operated tool for terminating the conductors of a hybrid cable to insulation displacement contacts contained in a connector. The tool includes a ratchet actuated cam which drives a ram and presser plate toward an abutting member upon which the connector assembly is secured. Free ends of the abutting member pass through the connector housing to provide adequate support. The free ends are then structurally supported by a bar that can be latched in place during operation of the tool. An interlock precludes operation of the tool without the support bar being in place. The operable handle which drives the ratchet is automatically disengaged when the ram has advanced to its fullest. A release mechanism provides for return of the ram to its starting position.

  • Patent number: 5151046
Abstract: An electrical connector for connecting a first printed circuit board to a second printed circuit board has terminal contacts which provide a reliable electrical connection. The contact terminals are positioned adjacent to a board receiving recess, and are configured to make an electrical connection with the second printed circuit board when the second printed circuit board is rotated to a second position. Overstress members, provided on the contact terminals, prevent the contact terminals from being deformed as the second printed circuit board is moved relative to the contact terminals. The overstress members are also configured to provide a reliable and relatively short pathway over which the electrial signals may travel between the boards.

  • Patent number: 5151560
Abstract: A grounding connector for interconnecting a pair of uninsulated conductors such as wires includes an outer body member having diverging tabs extending from upper extents of vertical walls of a U-shaped channel, the tabs being crimpable toward each other when applied to the wires. An inner body member includes a base section crossing the top of the U-shaped channel and diverging inner tabs extending along the inside surfaces of the outer body member to assured stops at the ends of the outer tabs. When the outer tabs are crimped to a vertical orientation, the inner tabs are also crimped to a vertical orientation and urge the base section against the wires in the U-shaped channel. The inner body member presses the wires against upper and lower surfaces of a conductive insert so that arrays of penetrating spikes along the insert surfaces break through corrosion of the wires and assuredly electrically interconnect the wires.
