    Abstract: Pluggable transceiver modules with additional functions and circuitry contained within the module. In a first embodiment, additional circuitry is added to determine bit error rates at the point of the module itself. This allows a much better diagnostic evaluation of location of problem. In an alternate embodiment, various logic is placed in the module. In a first alternate embodiment encryption/decryption units are placed in the converter module so that encryption and decryption operations on the serial bitstream do not need to be performed in a switch. Existing switches can be used but the interconnecting links can still be encrypted. A second alternate embodiment includes compression/decompression units placed in the module to allow effective higher throughput on the selected links.

    Abstract: A multiparty controlled remote security lock is disclosed. The embodiments herein relate to security systems and, more particularly, to remotely controlled biometric based mechanisms in security systems. In order to operate the remote security lock at least one OC and a plurality of RCs are employed. Further, the OC is located at the site of the lock and the RCs may be located away from the site of the lock. The remote security lock employs 2-factor authentication mechanisms using smartcard access and biometric means. A method for randomized selection of a subset of controllers (RCs) who operate the lock is used. The randomization enhances the scalability of the system, while keeping the security strength of the system as that of choosing the full set of controllers for operating the lock.

    Abstract: A waveguide has distal, medial and proximal sections. The distal and medial sections rotate relative to each other and to the proximal section. In a second configuration, the waveguide transforms linearly polarized radiation at the proximal end of the proximal section into circularly polarized electromagnetic radiation at the distal end of the distal section and vice versa. Preferably, the distal and medial sections include respective eight-wavelength polarizers and the proximal section includes a quarter-wavelength polarizer. A multi-band antenna feed includes two such waveguides, one nested inside the other, for transforming electromagnetic radiation of respective frequency bands.

    Abstract: A communication terminal optimally switches between the use of multicast reception and unicast reception, in consideration of the mobile radio environment of each terminal. For example, received signal strength indicator information is acquired at a received signal strength indicator information acquisition time calculated using a content reception time. Either multicast reception or unicast reception is selected according to the acquired received signal strength indicator information and content reception is performed. An optimal reception system can be selected and reception failure can be reduced. In addition, by performing a dynamic switching of reception methods as such, the base station-end can perform multicast delivery rather than unicast delivery when possible to communication terminals in favorable mobile radio environments, thereby significantly reducing the traffic load placed on communication paths.
