Patent number: 10725731Abstract: This is directed to controlling the output of audio based on the mode of an electronic device. In particular, this is directed to an electronic device having a sound mode, silent mode, and mute mode controlling the output of audio along different audio output routes. In the sound mode, all audio can be output, while only registered or authorized audio can be output in the silent mode. In the mute mode, no audio can be output. The sound and silent modes can be enabled using an interface of the device (e.g., a switch having two possible states), while the mute mode can be enabled using an accessory coupled to the device. To disengage the mute mode, a user can provide a corresponding instruction using the accessory, or providing an instruction on the device related to volume control. For example, a user can change the device volume using an on-device interface, or toggle a sound/silent switch to a sound mode.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2019Date of Patent: July 28, 2020Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Patrick Coffman, Meriko Borogove, Jonathan Bennett, Gregory Chapman, Anthony Guetta, Deepak Iyer, Eric Johnson

Patent number: 10725761Abstract: Embodiments provide methods and systems for updating application data in snapshots of applications for previewing. Some embodiments update application data by determining when current application data may expire and retrieving updated application data. The application data for various applications in a preview mode may be updated based on an allotted budget. Permission can be selectively granted to applications to obtain updated data so as to control the budget. Application data in the snapshots may appear updated to a user as the user browses the dock without requiring the applications to request updated application data when the user enters the dock, regardless of whether each application is active. Further, some embodiments may generate a snapshot using a layer hierarchy and image layer data generated while the application was last running if the time associated with when the application was last active is later than the time associated with an existing snapshot.Type: GrantFiled: June 10, 2016Date of Patent: July 28, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Neil G. Patent number: 10725928Abstract: A system and method for efficiently performing maintenance on a cache. In various embodiments, control logic in a cache controller or elsewhere receives an indication for invalidating a range of virtual-to-physical mappings in a given translation lookaside buffer (TLB). The logic determines a first latency to invalidate entries of the TLB based on a number of addresses in the range and a number of supported page sizes simultaneously stored in the TLB. The logic determines a second latency based on a number of entries in the TLB. If the first latency is greater, then the logic traverses through each TLB entry and invalidates TLB entries storing a virtual address within the range. If the first latency is smaller, then the logic traverses through each address in the range and invalidates TLB entries storing a virtual address within the range.Type: GrantFiled: January 9, 2019Date of Patent: July 28, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Brian R. Mestan, Pradeep Kanapathipillai, Joshua William Smith

Patent number: 10728649Abstract: An apparatus for delivering audio signals to a user includes an air-conduction transducer and a bone-conduction transducer. The air-conduction transducer is configured to convert a component of the audio signals to air vibrations detectable by an ear of the user. The bone-conduction transducer is configured to convert another component of the audio signals to vibrations in a cranial bone of the user via direct contact with the user. The apparatus employs one or more filters to separate input audio signals to produce a high-frequency component, a mid-frequency component, and a low-frequency component. The mid- and low-frequency components are processed using compressors to reduce the dynamic range of the components, and then combined to produce a combined component. The combined component is delivered to the user through the bone-conduction transducer, and the high-frequency component is delivered to the user through the air-conduction transducer.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2018Date of Patent: July 28, 2020Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventor: Tomlinson Holman

Patent number: 10728690Abstract: An iterative method for finding which user characteristic data should be used for pruning a database of available HRTFs before selecting an HRTF from the database for a target user (target listener.) The selected HRTF is expected to be the one that is more suitable for target user. This is also referred to as having “personalized” the HRTF selection process for the target user. This is not about computing a suitable HRTF but rather how to use the user characteristic data to improve the chances of selecting the most appropriate one from a database of available HRTFs. Other aspects are also described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 2019Date of Patent: July 28, 2020Assignee: APPLE INC.Inventors: Darius A. Satongar, Jonathan D. Sheaffer, Martin E.
