  • Patent number: 9419408
Abstract: An optical amplifier with network optimization techniques maximizes performance of a conventional optical amplifier with minimum user intervention. A circulator enables as much light as possible just below a stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold to be launched in to an optical fiber. An amount of reflected power directed by a circulator to a photo diode has a direct correlation to the quality of the received signal in a communications system.

  • Patent number: 9413468
Abstract: Powering an active/splitter and providing information to ONUs to cause adjustments to ONU operating wavelengths. An ONU may identify the port of a splitter to which the ONU is connected in order to make wavelength adjustments. Various techniques enable the ONU to identify from which port the ONU is receiving signals, such as a splitter that splits signals to ONUs in a cable network and signals to one or more ONUs the port to which it is connected. The splitter may lack electrical power and may perform the signal function by harvesting optical power from optical power provided to the splitter. In this manner, an active splitter may behave passively with respect to powering components in the absence of electrical power.

  • Patent number: 9414100
Abstract: Techniques for synchronizing streams in an adaptive streaming environment include cross-chassis and intra-chassis synchronization of video and/or audio. In an adaptive streaming system that streams content in segments or chunks at varying levels of quality corresponding to different coding rates, implementations enable seamless switching between output streams. For example, synchronizing multiple output streams for switching between coded adaptive bit rate streams across multiple chassis involve enforcing decisions of a master encoder for inverse telecine, frame rate conversion, and segment boundary to slave encoders associated with the same group of output stream representations.

  • Patent number: 9407466
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses to adaptively deliver high-definition digital entertainment and telecommunications to client devices over various networking technologies. A gateway device receives one or more services and delivers the one or more services to one or more client devices, respectively, using a plurality of networking technologies. A controller determines which among the plurality of networking technologies to use to deliver the one or more services to the one or more client devices, respectively. To make such a determination, the controller can monitor one or more conditions of the plurality of networking technologies.

  • Patent number: 9401840
Abstract: A quality check of service received by a CPE device within a first customer premise is initiated, and if the results of the quality check indicate a problem with the service received by the CPE device, one or more CPE devices within one or more customer premises sharing upstream network resources with the first customer premise is identified and a quality check of service received by the one or more identified CPE devices can be conducted. If the results of the quality check of the one or more identified CPE devices indicate a problem with the service received by the CPE devices, a determination can be made that a problem exists at a network component upstream from the first customer premise and the other one or more customer premises.

  • Patent number: 9398326
Abstract: A method of identifying a representative image of a video stream is provided. Similarity between video frames of a primary video stream relative to video frames of a different secondary video stream having similar content is evaluated and a video frame from the primary video stream having a greatest extent of similarity relative to a video frame of the secondary video stream is identified. The identified video frame is selected as an image representative of the primary video stream and may be used as an informative thumbnail image for the primary video stream. A video processing electronic device and at least one non-transitory computer readable storage medium having computer program instructions stored thereon for performing the method are also provided.

  • Patent number: 9396194
Abstract: A system for processing correlated metadata is provided, the metadata being programmatic metadata relating to one or more episodes of a television show. Mappings, or correlations, between chunks of the metadata that originated from a particular data source and the metadata clusters are determined and displayed on a graphical user interface. Using this display, a user can detect inconsistencies in the correlated metadata. An inconsistency may be an incorrect mapping, the mapping of more than one of the metadata chunks that originated from the same data source to the same metadata cluster, or that one or more of the metadata chunks have not been mapped to a metadata cluster. The mappings can be edited to remove detected inconsistencies.

  • Patent number: 9391724
Abstract: A transmitter, using frequency sub-band coding, can output a plurality of narrowcast and/or broadcast signals to a plurality of sub-groups or nodes along a single optical link. The transmitter can output the plurality of signals as multiple slices of spectrum, wherein each slice of spectrum is designated for a particular sub-group or node. The transmitter can further instruct each receiver or node as to which slice of spectrum to use and at which frequency to output the associated signal information to its intended subscribers. Thus, a single transmitter can feed narrowcast information to multiple nodes or receivers along a single optical link. In embodiments, channels can be monitored and manipulated on a channel-by-channel basis, and channels delivered using different network solutions can be combined.

  • Patent number: 9385997
Abstract: In accordance with a method for communicating a control word (CW) from a client such as an encryptor to a server such as the entitlement control message generator (ECMG) of a conditional access system (CAS), communication is established between the client and server over a secure connection. A control word to be encrypted is received by the client and encrypted using a first and second key. The first key is a global secret key (GSK) that is known to the client and the server without being communicated over the secure connection. The second key is a control word encryption key (CWEK) that is derived from a locally generated client nonce (CN) and a server nonce (SN) obtained from the server over the secure connection. The encrypted control word (ECW) is sent to the server over the secure connection.

  • Patent number: 9386357
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for displaying information relating to a portion of a multimedia presentation. A progress bar is provided and displayed. A length of the progress bar is representative of a duration of the multimedia presentation. A user selects a first and a second point in the multimedia presentation, thereby defining a portion of the presentation. Depending on the selection, one or more communications (e.g., comments, online postings, etc.) may be identified. Each of these communications may have been composed in relation to at least a point of the multimedia presentation that is within the defined portion. Information depending on those identified communications may then be displayed to the user.

  • Patent number: 9386347
Abstract: Various methods, systems, and apparatuses can be used to perform burst efficient fast program acquisition. In some implementations, a burst efficient fast program acquisition system can operate to remove unused B-frame thereby reducing the bandwidth required for a fast burst. In other implementations, the burst efficient fast program acquisition system can decode the fast burst, identify the video frames needed for reassembly, and encode a truncated group of frames for fast burst transmission. A burst efficient fast program acquisition system can also use pre-calculated streamlined burst fast burst in conjunction with program prediction methods such as adjacent program and frequently viewed program thereby further reducing the latency associated with IPTV program acquisitions.

  • Patent number: 9386267
Abstract: This disclosure describes cooperatively transcoding an input signal to one or more output signals. The software and/or hardware logic modules are designed to work cooperatively in ways that can reduce the number and/or complexity of logic modules implementing a plurality of related transcodings of signal formats. By advantageously determining dependencies and sub-functions in transcoding an input stream to multiple output streams, hardware and/or software logic can be reduced. Reduced logic to implement multi-format transcoding improves the costs and/or capacity of systems for transcoding large numbers of streams and signals.

  • Patent number: 9384217
Abstract: In one embodiment, a method detects a user input for a telestration on an image being displayed on a display device and determines a plurality of image portions of the image based on the telestration. The plurality of image portions are determined by a boundary around each image portion based on the telestration. The method then determines a set of tags for the plurality of image portions. The set of tags are determined based on image recognition of content in the plurality of image portions. An operator is determined based on the telestration where the operator characterizes an operation to perform for the plurality of image portions. The method determines a search query based on applying the operator to the set of tags and causes a search to be performed using the search query.
