Abstract: A composition for use in a liquid crystal optical element, such as a liquid crystal display or laser shutter device, comprised of a liquid crystal material and a solidified polymer material. The liquid crystal is such that its refractive index is changed depending on states of applying a voltage. In one state, the refractive index of the liquid crystal substantially coincides with the refractive index of the solidified matrix to thereby pass light. While in the other state, the refractive index of the liquid crystal does not coincide with the refractive index of the solidified matrix to thereby cause the scattering of light. Specifically, the liquid crystal material used in the composition has a refractive index anisotropy (.DELTA.n) is greater than 0.18 and the dielectric anisotropy (.DELTA..epsilon.) satisfies the relation of 5<.DELTA..epsilon.<11.6.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing a sheet glass includes pouring a molten glass into a bathtub containing a molten metal so that it will form a molten glass stream having a constant width in a high temperature zone on the molten metal bath. The molten glass stream in the form of a ribbon having a desired thickness is led into a subsequent shaping zone, wherein, in the high temperature zone, the molten metal level in the vicinity of the edge of the molten glass stream is differentiated from the molten metal level at the center of the glass stream to complement a force of the molten glass stream for expanding or contracting in the width direction and thereby to maintain the edge at a predetermined position.
Abstract: A glass plate is heated in a heating furnace and is bend-shaped to be a complexly curved glass plate while the glass plate is passed on curved rollers wherein support pads of a pushing mechanism push the complexly curved glass plate from an upstream side to a downstream side of a transferring device in a state that a rear edge of the complexly curved glass plate is supported by the support pads whereby the complexly curved glass plate is delivered to a cooling device side while a turning movement of the complexly curved glass plate is controlled during the transfer.
