  • Patent number: 8819109
Abstract: A technique for providing information via a data network is disclosed. A first server transmits an identifier to a client, where the identifier is mappable to a uniform resource locator (URL) associated with content stored on a second server. The client transmits the identifier to a second server. The second server maps the identifier to its associated URL, retrieves the content associated with the URL, and transmits the content to the client. Various types of mappings are disclosed, including encryption and predetermined mappings.

  • Patent number: 8817757
Abstract: A zero-configuration secure mobility networking technique for WLANs is provided, utilizing split link-layer and a Web-based authentication. The link-layer authentication process facilitates network-to-user authentication and generation of session-specific encryption keys for air traffic using digital certificates to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks without requiring users to have pre-configured accounts. Although any WLAN host can pass the link-layer authentication and obtain link connectivity, the WLAN only allows the host to obtain IP networking configuration parameters and to communicate with a Web-based authentication server prior to initiating the Web-based authentication process that is responsible for user-to-network authentication. The Web-based authentication server employs a Web page for initial authentication and a Java applet for consequent authentications.

  • Patent number: 8819479
Abstract: Methods, systems, and products mirror data between local memory and remote storage. A write command is sent from a server to a remote storage device, and a timer is established. A current time of the timer is compared to a maximum time period. If the maximum time period expires without receipt of an acknowledgment to the write command, then a write error is assumed to exist to the remote storage device.

  • Publication number: 20140235291
Abstract: A method for providing local cordless service comprises the steps of receiving subscriber neighborhood zone selection input so that a mobile telephone equipped subscriber may place or receive calls for a fixed rate, for example, per month without having to pay radio frequency air time charges any time they are located within their selected subscribed-to zones. If the subscribed-to zones are adjacent to one another and the mobile subscriber roans from one zone to another, the subscriber may continue their fee call uninterrupted and without paying air time charges. However, when the subscriber roans outside their subscribed-to zones they may be switched from the present local cordless services t conventional personal communications services and pay air time charges. However for an active call. No air-time charges are incurred as the user transitions between the cellular/DPCS environment and the local cordless service environment.

The uplink channel has a plurality of frames, such that each frame has a first selectable number of minislots and a second selectable number of slots. A reservation request of a first type is sent into a first selected minislot of a selected frame of the uplink channel when information of a first type is to be sent. The reservation request of the first type requests an assignment for at least one slot for transmitting information of the first type in at least one frame that is subsequent to the selected frame. A reservation request of a second type is sent into a second selected minislot of the selected frame when the second selected minislot is available in the selected frame and when information of a second type is to be sent.

  • Patent number: 8813213
Abstract: An application provisioning device may be used to manage a profile of a host and provide data corresponding to a selected application for installation at a host. A reverse firewall may use the profile of the host to determine whether to allow or block particular network communication from an application running on the host. An indication of a selected application may be received at the application provisioning device. Configuration information may also be received at the application provisioning device. The application provisioning server may request an update to the profile of a host and transmit such a request. The profile may be updated to reflect the configuration information and/or information of the selected application. Data corresponding to the selected application may be updated and transmitted to a host computer, where it may be installed. Therefore, the installed application running on the host may operate without being prematurely blocked by the reverse firewall.

  • Patent number: 8811889
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing broadband signals to a portable user device is disclosed. Broadband signals, such as satellite radio signals, are received at a base station having a plurality of antennas. The content of the broadband signals are then encoded using space time coding (STC), and the STC encoded broadband content is transmitted from the plurality of antennas via a first wireless network protocol. The STC encoded broadband content can be received at a portable user device having a plurality of antennas or at a wireless access point having a plurality of antennas, which then transmit the broadband signals via a second wireless network protocol.

  • Patent number: 8811780
Abstract: A method, apparatus and system for minimally intrusive fiber identification includes imparting a time-varying modulation onto an optical signal propagating in an optical fiber and subsequently detecting the presence of the time-varying modulation in the optical signal transmitting through the fiber to identify the fiber. In a specific embodiment of the invention, a time-varying curvature is imposed on the fiber to be identified and the presence of the resultant time variation in the transmitted power of a propagating optical signal is subsequently detected for identification of the manipulated fiber.

  • Patent number: 8811185
Abstract: This invention provides a more effective method for capacity planning and traffic engineering of packet networks that connect Virtual Private Network (VPN) sites. A distributed architecture efficiently computes traffic matrixes that show the number of bytes and/or packets exchanged among provider edge (PE) routers and/or service nodes. Each PE router in a service node is exports flow records to a Flow Record Processor (FRP) in the same location. The FRPs use these records in conjunction with configuration data extracted from the PE routers to compute partial traffic matrixes. The partial traffic matrixes are uploaded to a Matrix Generator to create a total traffic matrix. The total traffic matrix is essential input for capacity planning or traffic engineering tools.

  • Publication number: 20140226588
Abstract: A method and system reduce interference between overlapping first and second wireless LAN cells contending for the same medium. Each cell includes a respective plurality of member stations. An inter-cell contention-free period value is assigned to a first access point station in the first cell, associated with an accessing order in the medium for member stations in the first and second cells. The access point in the first cell transmits an initial shield packet to deter other stations from contending for the medium. The access point then transmits a beacon packet containing the inter-cell contention-free period value to member stations in the second cell. A second access point in the second cell can then delay transmissions by member stations in the second cell until after the inter-cell contention-free period expires.

  • Publication number: 20140226750
Abstract: In various embodiments, techniques are provided to determine channel characteristics of various communication systems such as OFDM systems or systems using a plurality of transmit antennas by using various sets of training symbols that produce zero cross-correlation energy.
