Abstract: A method and apparatus for fulfilling purchases is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure can include, for example, a portable communication device having a controller element that receives from an online system a barcode image as an object of acknowledgment of a product purchased from said online system, and presents on a display of the portable communication device said barcode image to complete a purchase fulfillment process by way of at least one among a visual inspection of the barcode image by a merchant employee and processing of said barcode image by a point of sale (POS) device. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Abstract: Systems and methods for wireless communication are provided. In a particular embodiment a base station device is disclosed that includes an interface coupled to a network to communicate with a central controller and a wireless transceiver adapted to communicate wirelessly with one or more portable devices via a local area network. The base station device also includes logic coupled to the interface and to the wireless transceiver. The logic communicates with the remote central controller device via the network to receive an authorization to communicate wirelessly. The logic selectively activates the wireless transceiver after receiving the authorization.

Abstract: A method and system for delivering media programs is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a multimedia system having a controller element that receives a transmission request for each of a plurality of media programs, receives a desired viewing time for each of the plurality of media programs, prioritizes an order for transmitting the plurality of media programs according to their respective desired viewing times, and transmits to a presentation device the plurality of media programs according to the prioritized order of transmission for presenting said media programs at a media device coupled to the presentation device. Abstract: A method and apparatus for provisioning a communication device is disclosed. An apparatus that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device having a controller element that establishes wireless communication with a base unit operating according to a short-range cordless phone communication protocol, and receives from the base unit provisioning information that enables a communication device to establish wireless communications with an access point operating according to a wireless fidelity (WiFi) communications protocol. Abstract: In a disclosed method for interpreting automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance data, a data processing system may receive user input that selects a log file to be processed. The log file may contain log records produced by an ASR system as a result of verbal interaction between an individual and the ASR system. In response to receiving the user input, the data processing system may automatically interpret data in the log records and generate interpretation results. The interpretation results may include a duration for a system prompt communicated to the individual by the ASR system, a user response to the system prompt, and a duration for the user response. The user response may include a textual representation of a verbal response from the individual, obtained through ASR. The interpretation results may also include an overall duration for the telephone call.

Abstract: A system and method for presenting screensavers is disclosed. An apparatus that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a set-top box having a controller element that presents at a media device one or more screensavers contextually associated with a paused media program. Abstract: A method of providing media content access is disclosed that includes providing a list of available media content to a display device and receiving a selection related to the list of available media content. The method further includes sending data related to the selection to a content source and to an access rule source and receiving media content from the content source based on the selection and an access rule related to the media content from the access rule source. The method also includes applying the access rule to the selected media content, where the access rule defines a restriction to limit access to the media content.

Abstract: A storage medium for a cellular telephone is disclosed. An apparatus that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a cellular telephone having a housing assembly, and a Modular Hard Disk Drive (MHDD) storage medium that couples to the housing assembly as an integral portable accessory unit. The housing assembly can have a wireless transceiver that exchanges messages with at least one among a plurality of cellular base stations, and a controller that manages operations of the wireless transceiver and the MHDD storage medium. Abstract: A method, system and computer program for utilizing destination information stored in a database are disclosed. The database is queried for information about a service located at a destination, and location information of a requesting party is determined. Routing information is determined based upon the location information of the requesting party and the destination information of the service. The routing information is utilized to establish a route between the requesting party and the destination of the service.

Abstract: A network-based announcement and message delivery service for providing a landline customer with information of interest such as weather, financial market data, time/temperature, sporting event results, etc. In a first embodiment, information is provided to a subscriber who simply lifts the handset of the telephone. The subscriber instead of hearing a dial tone hears the information in the form of streaming audio. In another embodiment, information is provided to the subscriber by way of information displayed on a caller-ID display and/or by way of talking caller-ID.

Abstract: A system and method for remote speech recognition includes one or more customer premise equipment, a speech engine, and a communication engine. The customer premise equipment interfaces with a host from which the customer premise equipment is remotely located. The speech engine, remotely located from the host, recognizes a plurality of speech spoken by a user of the customer premise equipment and translates the speech into the language of the host. The speech engine further converts the recognized speech into one or more text data packets where the text data packets include the recognized speech as data instead of voice. The communication engine encrypts the text data packets and transmits the text data packets to the host. Transmitting data instead of voice to the host reduces the computational demands on the host. Additionally, the communication engine receives a plurality of information from the host.

Abstract: A method for positioning a user interface of a computing device is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a computing device having a user interface (UI), a counterweight, and a housing assembly that houses the UI with one or more exposed portions, and the counterweight. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a Set-Top Box (STB) located in a building can have a controller element that presents a media program to a media device operable only in the building, pauses presentation of the media program responsive to a pause request, generates a departure mark that identifies a presentation point in the media program associated with the pause request, receives a request to resume presentation of the media program from the departure mark at a portable communication device capable of maintaining communications with the STB outside the building, and transmits to the portable communication device a presentation of the media program from the departure mark. The customers engage the customer activities while holding in a queue where the customer activities reduce the boredom, frustration, and perceived hold duration associated with holding to speak to a live agent. The customers are offered one or more options of the customer activities to interact with and the system and method monitors the customers' selections and interaction with the customer activities. As agents become available, each customer is transferred to an agent along with information regarding the customer's interaction with a selected customer activity. Upon completion of the interaction between the agent and the customer, the customer has the option to return to the selected customer activity and continue interacting with the selected customer activity.

Abstract: A system, method and software for facilitating a speech-enabled call routing application using an action-object matrix is disclosed. In operation, a natural language user utterance may be evaluated to identify an action and object available in an action-object matrix indicating transactions or operations available to a user. Depending upon the contents of the natural language user utterance, additional prompts and/or a disambiguation dialogue may be effected to elicit an available action-object combination selection from the user. Following identification of an action-object combination from the natural language user utterance, the action-object matrix may cooperate with a look-up table to identify an appropriate use routing destination. Following identification of an appropriate routing destination, the user connection may be routed to a service agent or module configured to facilitate the user selected transaction as indicated by the action-object combination.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for verifying call waiting information in a communication system is particularly well suited for correcting mispronunciation of caller identification information provided for a call waiting call. A current pronunciation of the call waiting information is provided to the calling party who is prompted to change the current pronunciation. The system receives a new pronunciation of the call waiting information and stores information about the new pronunciation for subsequent retrieval.
