Patent number: 11689439Abstract: A communication module mounted to a motor provides for communication between a motor controller and a motor or between the motor controller and devices mounted on or proximate to the motor. The communication module may be configured to accept signals from various different encoders and/or load devices mounted on or proximate to the motor. The communication module receives a position feedback signal from a primary encoder interface and is configured to transmit the data to the motor controller at a periodic update rate. The communication module also receives feedback signals from at least one additional device and transmits the data to the motor controller. The communication module synchronizes its periodic update rate with the motor controller such that the position feedback signal may be utilized to control operation of the motor. The additional feedback signals may be communicated at the same or differing update rates.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2020Date of Patent: June 27, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Arun K. Patent number: 11687504Abstract: Data reduction services are implemented on one or more nodes of an IIoT data pipeline to intelligently determine an appropriate data reduction strategy based on characteristics of the incoming data. In one or more embodiments, data reduction components on the pipeline node or on an edge device define different data filtering rules or algorithms that are selectively applied to streaming time-series data based on a probability distribution of the data. The data pipeline node performs real-time distribution analysis on the streaming data to determine whether the data has a unimodal distribution, a multimodal distribution, or no mode, and selects one of the data filtering rules based on this determined probability distribution. In this way, the data is intelligently reduced in a manner that retains critical information within the reduced data set while achieving a high level of data reduction.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 2021Date of Patent: June 27, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Dennis Jinghui Luo, Francisco P. Patent number: 11681502Abstract: An industrial IDE supports development of control programming using an industrial domain-specific language (DSL) that allows control programming to be written using a scripted programming language having features catered to the industrial domain. The industrial DSL can simplify and streamline development of industrial control code relative to using conventional graphics-based control programming formats such as ladder logic, since a script-based industrial DSL can be used to write programming code using fewer mouse clicks relative to traditional control programming environments. Editing tools inherent to the industrial DSL can provide dynamic programming feedback that guides the developer through the process of developing control code. The industrial IDE can also provide tools that extend the platform to users who wish to customize the industrial DSL to suit their preferred programming approaches.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2022Date of Patent: June 20, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ryan Dunn, Karl Staas, Andrew Stump, Anthony Carrara, Eashwer Srinivasan, Christopher Como, Sharon Billi-Duran

Patent number: 11681512Abstract: An industrial integrated development environment (IDE) provides a development framework for designing, programming, and configuring multiple aspects of an industrial automation system using a common design environment and data model. Projects creating using embodiments of the IDE system can be built on an object-based model rather than, or in addition to, a tag-based architecture. To this end, the IDE system can support the use of automation objects that serve as building blocks for this object-based development structure. To ensure consistency within and between projects, as well as to ensure that a given industrial project is dynamically updated to reflect changes to an industrial asset's attributes (e.g., control code, visualization definitions, testing scripts, analytic code, etc.), embodiments of the IDE system can use automation object inheritance features to propagate changes made to an automation object definition to all instances of the automation object used throughout a control project.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 2022Date of Patent: June 20, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Andrew R Stump, Anthony Carrara, Eashwer Srinivasan, Srdjan Josipovic, Lorenzo P Majewski, Christopher Wayne Como, Christopher E Stanek, Matthew R Ericsson

Patent number: 11675936Abstract: A design and testing simulation scales an industrial simulation across multiple different processing nodes, and generates a unified view of the distributed industrial simulation based on simulation and graphics data collected from the multiple processing nodes. The system can allow the user to designate different portions of the a digital model of an automation system to be executed on respective different distributed processing nodes, such that each portion of the model is executed on its designated node and the nodes exchange data as necessary to simulate the aggregate automation system as a whole. In order to visualize this aggregated simulation, the design and testing system unifies the distributed portions of the model into a unified three-dimensional presentation at a single node, and this unified view is animated based on data received from the nodes on which the distributed simulation is executed.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2020Date of Patent: June 13, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Ian McGregor, Adam Davidson, David Dawkins

Patent number: 11675329Abstract: A functional safety system performs safety analysis on three-dimensional point cloud data measured by a time-of-flight (TOF) sensor that monitors a hazardous industrial area that includes an automation system. To reduce the amount of point cloud data to be analyzed for hazardous conditions, the safety system executes a real-time emulation of the automation system using a digital twin and live controller data read from an industrial controller that monitors and controls the automation system. The safety system generates simulated, or shadow, point cloud data based on the emulation and subtracts this simulate point cloud data from the measured point cloud data received from the TOF sensor. This removes portions of the point cloud data corresponding to known or expected elements within the monitored area. Any remaining entities detected in the reduced point cloud data can be further analyzed for safety concerns.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2021Date of Patent: June 13, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: John Pritchard, Michael Sarvo, Jr., Samuel Owen

Patent number: 11669092Abstract: A safety system for autonomously mobile machinery (e.g., automated guided vehicles) achieves safety-rated collision avoidance functionality by detecting objects located in the field of view of a three-dimensional (3D) time-of-flight (TOF) vision system or camera. Incorporating a 3D TOF camera into a collision avoidance system allows a large volume to be monitored for object intrusion, improving reliability of object detection. To ensure reliability of the safety system's obstacle detection capabilities, the collision avoidance system also includes self-diagnostic capabilities that verify the accuracy of the TOF camera's distance measurements even in the absence of a test object within the camera's field of view. This is achieved by tilting the TOF camera downward to include the floor within the camera's field of view, allowing the floor to act as a test object that can be leveraged to verify accuracy of the camera's distance measurements.Type: GrantFiled: August 29, 2019Date of Patent: June 6, 2023Assignee: Rockwell Automation Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Frederic Boutaud, Linda A.
