Publication number: 20100157402Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for optical switching and data control, without the interaction of electronic switching speeds. In one example embodiment, a common cavity optical latch is provided that that can hold an optical state for an extended period of time, and the operation of which is controlled optically. Optical phase control allows optical modal switching to be employed between two common optical cavities, using incident optical signals and the way in which the cavities manipulate the phase within them to lock in one or the other configuration, thereby forming an optical latch. The optical latch is implemented in an integrated fashion, such as in a CMOS environment.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 5, 2010Publication date: June 24, 2010Applicant: BAE SYSTEMS Information & Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventor: Daniel N. Publication number: 20100156697Abstract: In an embodiment, a quantity smoother includes a first stage and a second stage. The first stage is operable to receive a sequence of raw samples of a quantity and to generate from the raw samples intermediate samples of the quantity, the intermediate samples having a reduced level of fluctuation relative to the sequence of raw samples. The second stage is coupled to the first stage and is operable to generate from the intermediate samples resulting samples of the quantity, the resulting samples having a reduced level of fluctuation relative to the sequence of intermediate samples. For example, such a quantity smoother may be part of a target-ranging system on board a fighter jet, and may smooth an error in an estimated target range so that the fighter pilot may more quickly and confidently determine in his head a range window within which the target lies.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 6, 2009Publication date: June 24, 2010Applicant: BAE SYSTEMS Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventor: Ronald M. Patent number: 7736934Abstract: An improved method for manufacturing a vertical germanium detector is disclosed. Initially, a detector window is opened through an oxide layer on a single crystalline substrate. Next, a single crystal germanium layer is grown within the detector window, and an amorphous germanium layer is grown on the oxide layer. The amorphous germanium layer is then polished and removed until only a portion of the amorphous germanium layer is located around the single crystal germanium layer. A tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) layer is deposited on the amorphous germanium layer and the single crystal germanium layer. An implant is subsequently performed on the single crystal germanium layer. After an oxide window has been opened on the TEOS layer, a titanium layer is deposited on the single crystal germanium layer to form a vertical germanium detector.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 2008Date of Patent: June 15, 2010Assignee: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventors: Daniel N. Publication number: 20100141768Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to methods and apparatus for infrared imagers including fast electrostatic shutters and offset compensation. Fast electrostatic shutters are used for video image correction including image offset compensation where temporal noise and scene nonuniformity are corrected. This method provides a shutterless experience for the user because the image will be blocked for only one frame at a time. A method of manufacturing an electrostatic infrared shutter includes a conductive infrared-transparent substrate, covering it with an insulating layer, depositing adhesive and a thin film stack, delineating a working area, providing contacts, heat-treating the assembly, and making the polymer non-reflective in the infrared.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 5, 2008Publication date: June 10, 2010Applicant: BAE SYSTEMS INFORMATION & ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS INTEGRATION, INC.Inventors: Sergey Liberman, Michael Joswick

Patent number: 7733926Abstract: A Thulium laser (15) is used to directly drive a ZnGeP2 optical parametric oscillator (30) with a nominal 2 ?m output to generate the 3-5 micron wavelengths. In one embodiment, the ZGP OPO is configured as a linear resonator and in another embodiment the ZGP OPO is configured as a ring resonator. The ring resonator prevents optical feedback to the Thulium laser (15) and eliminates the need for an optical isolator (24). Moreover, the Thulium laser pump (15) is implemented as a Tm:YAlO3 laser in which YAlO is the host for the Thulium YAlO is particularly beneficial as it is a mechanically hard optical material allowing high thermal loading without fracture as well as natural birefringence that can minimize thermal birefringence losses. A longer wavelength transition at 1.99 microns is selected to minimize nonlinear crystal loss. More particularly, a high power, high efficiency Tm:YAlO3 laser repetitively Q-switched at 10 kHz is used to drive a ZnGeP2 OPO.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 2004Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventor: Leonard A. Patent number: 7724851Abstract: A digital wireless communication system for increasing the number of users capable of communicating over a network permits multiusers to transmit information simultaneously on the same channel of frequency. The primary example of such a system would be that employing radio frequency transmissions, even optical transmissions; however, the invention will also apply to magnectic detections such as in the reading of information stored on a magnetic tape. It is possible to increase overall throughput in terms of total number of bits transmitted through the shared medium by all users of a multiple access system if the signals are allowed to interfere. Publication number: 20100118168Abstract: A composite focal plane assembly with an expandable architecture has a multi-layer, double-sided aluminum nitride (AlN) substrate and vertical architecture to achieve the dual function of focal plane and electronics backplane. Imaging dice and other electrical components are mounted and wire bonded to one surface and then direct backplane connectivity is provided on the opposing surface through a matrix of electrical contacts. Publication number: 20100109976Abstract: An optical tracking system, and method therefor, tracks the movement of an object, such as a pilot's helmet, within an enclosed area, such as a cockpit. The system/method comprises a plurality of light sources fixedly mounted in predefined locations within the enclosed area and a light sensor mounted on the object. Each light source is modulated using a different frequency from the other light sources to make that light source uniquely identifiable. Modulated light from the various light sources is converted by the sensor into an electrical signal. This composite signal is subsequently separated into individual signals based on their unique modulations, and the light source for each signal is identified. The signals are thereafter processed to determine an azimuth and an elevation for the line-of-sight to each light source. The azimuth and elevation information may then be used to determine the position and orientation of the object.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 6, 2008Publication date: May 6, 2010Applicant: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration, Inc.Inventors: Daniel GILBERT, William ALEXANDER
