Patent number: 5763074Abstract: The heat sealing film and a magnetic transfer strip contain an adhesive layer comprising thermoplastic, immiscible binder components. One component is spherical, amorphous and embedded in finely distributed form in a homogeneous layer of the other, highly crystalline components in such a way that the spherical component protrudes hemispherically from the layer. The spherical binder is a glassy solid up to at least 60.degree. C. and above 80.degree. C. is plastically deformable. The hemispheres protruding from the adhesive layer produce a uniform, fine roughness of the surface. Both heat sealing film and magnetic transfer strip are nonblocking up to at least 60.degree. C. and heat-sealable at temperatures greater than 80.degree. C. The adhesive layer imparts to a magnetic recording medium a uniform thickness of the adhesive joint and a permanent, temperature-resistant adhesive force.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1996Date of Patent: June 9, 1998Assignee: BASF Magnetics GmbHInventors: Albert Kohl, Karl Heinz Romer, Werner Latzel, Peter Heilmann, Michael Hitzfeld

Patent number: 5601647Abstract: An improved extrusion coater having at least two coater slots for applying one or more magnetizable layers to a flexible nonmagnetic substrate is described. The upper lip of the outlet orifice is recessed relative to the lower lip and, in addition, the edge of a right parallelepiped magnet which has a gradient of more than 400 A/cm.sup.2 in the direction of the extruder slot, resulting in a stabilized liquid cushion, is arranged opposite the outlet orifice for the dispersions from the extrusion coater, on the other side of the substrate. It is thus possible to apply very thin layers and to make the meniscus insensitive to interfering forces. To reduce the edge bead, a stripping plate (13) which is extended beyond the range of the upper or lower lip of the extrusion coater, in the direction of the coated material web (1), is mounted at both coating edges, a minimum distance of from 0.05 to 0.8 mm between the surface (19) of the stripping plate (13) and the coated material web being established (FIG. 1).Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 1995Date of Patent: February 11, 1997Assignee: BASF Magnetics GmbHInventors: Albert Pertzsch, Reinhard Kraetschmer, Michael Breitsameter, Siegfried Rieger

Patent number: 5597132Abstract: This tape winding arm is part of a winding device for film strips, tape or other similar medium, where the medium is wound up onto rolls. The medium passes over the end of the winding arm along guiding and deflecting elements on a cushion of compressed air, which is supplied through a hollow in the arm, and past a rotating pinch roller. This pinch roller is also part of the winding arm, and the winding arm is made of lightweight metal and pivots, so that its pinch roller rests on the tape roll, helping to ensure even winding through constant contact with the roll. The winding arm consists of two parts screwed together at the pivot point; this allows easy disassembly and removal from the pivot spindle.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: BASF Magnetics GmbHInventors: Manfred Schlatter, Bernd Scholtysik

Patent number: 5585139Abstract: The magnetic recording medium consists essentially of a polymeric substrate, a coherent, magnetic thin metal film applied to the surface of the substrate by a PVD method and, if required, a protective layer formed on the thin metal film. In order to achieve a large residual induction component in the plane of the film, in particular high residual induction in the transverse direction, the thin metal film contains a noble gas or noble gas mixture, preferably argon. During the coating of the polymeric substrate with the magnetic metal or with the magnetic alloy, the noble gas is fed directly and preferably tangentially to the substrate surface at a specific noble gas flow of from 1.0.multidot.10.sup.4 to 6.0.multidot.10.sup.4. In the plane of the thin metal film, the ratio of residual induction in the longitudinal direction to that in the transverse direction is from about 0.9 to about 1.8.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1994Date of Patent: December 17, 1996Assignee: BASF Magnetics GmbHInventors: Helmut Steininger, Peter Heilmann

Patent number: 5558275Abstract: An environmentally appropriate protective covering for articles, in particular rectangular parallelepipedal bodies, comprises a container receiving the article or rectangular parallelepipedal body, if appropriate is of a rectangular parallelepipedal form and is closed by means of an at least three-part, partly separable closure strip. For opening, the central part is separated from the side parts, which remain on the container. The presence or absence of the central part consequently represents an indication of originality. The closure strip can also be used advantageously in the case of a protective covering unit, comprising a plurality of stacked containers, for connecting and forming a pack. The invention can be used advantageously in any application where a single closure strip can be used to economize on outer packaging materials.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1993Date of Patent: September 24, 1996Assignee: BASF Magnetics GmbHInventors: Klaus Schoettle, Gerald-Wolfgang Borck, Heinrich Wollensack
