Abstract: Sheet-like PET materials having slight surface roughness consisting of fine dot patterns in the submicron range are produced by double successive exposure of the surfaces to polarized UV light produced by a pulsed excimer laser and having planes of polarization arranged at an angle of from 20.degree. to 90.degree. relative to one another, and the PET films treated in this manner are used as a substrate for thin ferromagnetic metal layers.

Abstract: A napped textile product is prepared by supplying a polyethylene terephthalate homopolymer yarn having an elongation of from about 20% to about 80%, a tenacity of from about 2.5 to about 3.5 grams/denier, and a boiling water shrinkage of from about 2% to about 15%; (b) forming a fabric from the yarn, so that substantially all yarn is the polyester yarn supplied in step (a); and (c) providing the fabric prepared in step (b) to a napping machine.
Abstract: In the preparation of dispersions of magnetic pigments in organic solvents, dispersants which have a sterically stabilizing effect are used. Milling results in division of the pigment aggregates, which combine again as a result of attractive forces to give secondary agglomerates in the event of poor stabilization. These flocculating materials must be removed from the dispersion by expensive filtration. If an increase in the fineness or pigment batch fluctuations lead to an increase in the secondary agglomerates, filter breakthroughs may occur, resulting in a dramatic reduction in the yield of magnetic recording medium. It was found that excellent dispersion stability is achieved when the magnetic pigments are first precoated with a long-chain dispersant. Subsequently, the use of charge-generating, low molecular weight codispersants, a charge build-up on the pigment is specifically induced by means of bases or acids.

Abstract: A process for removing volatile constituents from a polymer dispersion or solution by stripping with a carrier gas is disclosed. The carrier gas being, in the case of a polymer solution, the vapor of the solvent used for the polymer solution as an inert gas saturated with said vapor. In the case of a polymer dispersion, the vapor of the dispersing medium used for the polymer dispersion or an inert gas saturated with said vapor. In both processes certain amount of the carrier gas is passed through the polymer dispersion or solution, the volatile constituents taken up the carrier gas on passage through the polymer dispersion or solution are then removed from the carrier gas in such a manner that the energy content of the carrier gas remains essentially unchanged. The carrier gas thus obtained is then reused for further removal of volatile constituents from the same polymer dispersion or solution by stripping.
