Abstract: A process for the preparation of polymers is described, wherein at least one first ethylenically unsaturated monomer is subjected to a free radical polymerization in the presence of stable free radicals or sources of stable free radicals and of a compound having at least one free thiol group to give a polymer, and wherein the molar ratio of compound having a free thiol group to stable free radicals is from 0.05 to 1.1. The polymerization rate is substantially increased by the compound having a free thiol group.

Abstract: Formaldehyde is removed by distillation from reaction solutions containing a methlolated alkanal which was obtained from the reaction of formaldehyde with an alkanal which has at least one acidic hydrogen atom &agr; to the carbonyl function or from the reaction of a 2-alkylacrolein or acrolein with water and formaldehyde, by a process in which this reaction was carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of organic amine. The process permits the improved removal of formaldehyde from the reaction mixture and furthermore facilitates the hydrogenation of the alkanals thus obtained to give polyols.

Abstract: A method of removing and reclaiming a double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst from a polyol is disclosed. A polymeric acid that is soluble in the polyol is introduced into the polyol during or after the polymerization reaction. The polymeric acid reacts with the double metal cyanide catalyst thereby causing the double metal cyanide catalyst and the polymeric acid to form an agglomeration in the polyol. The agglomeration is easily separated from the polyol via filtration, for example. The recovered agglomerated DMC catalyst can then be reconstituted using an acid solution.
Abstract: In multimetal cyanide complexes, more than 30% by weight of the primary particles have a platelet-like habit, i.e. the length and width of the primary particles is at least three times the thickness of the particles.

Abstract: A nonstaining coating composition which comprises as essential components (A) a specific aliphatic sulfonic acid compound or amine salt thereof, (B) a compound having per molecule at least one functional group selected among carboxly, a carboxly anhydride group, and a carboxly group blocked with an alkyl vinyl ether, (C) a specific organosilicate and/or a condensate thereof, and (D) a resin having epoxy groups and/or alkoxysilyl groups in the molecule; and a method of finish coating. They give a cured coating film which has nonstaining properties based on a high degree of hydrophilicity from immediately after the formation thereof and has satisfactory long-term weatherability, water resistance, and chemical resistance. The film can impart an excellent finish appearance to the article.

Abstract: Surface-treated superabsorbent polymer particles obtained by mixing 100 parts by weight of superabsorbent polymer particles with 0.001 to 10 parts by weight of a hydroxyalkylamide, and heating the surface-treated superabsorbent polymer particles to crosslink molecular chains existing at least in the vicinity of the surfaces of the superabsorbent polymer particles is disclosed. Surface crosslinking the superabsorbent polymer particles with a hydroxyalkylamide substantially increases both the rate of liquid absorption and the quantity of liquid absorbed and retained by the superabsorbent particles.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for color matching are provided, in which paint recipe neural networks are utilized. The color of a standard is expressed as color values. The neural network includes an input layer having nodes for receiving input data related to paint bases. Weighted connections connect to the nodes of the input layer and have coefficients for weighting the input data. An output layer having nodes are either directly or indirectly connected to the weighted connections and generates output data related to color values. The data to the input layer and the data from the output layer are interrelated through the neural network's nonlinear relationship. The paint color matching neural network can be used for, but not limited to, color formula correction, matching from scratch, effect pigment identification, selection of targets for color tools, searching existing formulas for the closest match, identification of formula mistakes, development of color tolerances and enhancing conversion routines.
