Abstract: Isocyanate-functional polyurethane prepolymers and aqueous dispersions therefrom which are useful for the production of flat materials having excellent resistance to alcoholic solvents are described. The prepolymers are prepared by reacting: A) an isocyanate selected from the group consisting of i) an aliphatic and/or a cycloaliphatic isocyanate, ii) a mixture of an aromatic isocyanate and an aliphatic and/or a cycloaliphatic isocyanate, B) a di- or polyhydroxy compound having a number average molecular weight of from 700 to about 16,000, and C) optionally, a dihydroxy and/or polyhydroxyl compound having a number average molecular weight of less than 700, with the provisos that a) at least one of components A), B or C) has a functionality of more than 2 and b) if both component A) and component B) are difunctional, component C) cannot be a trihydroxy component of the formula: R—(OH)3 ?where R is a saturated straight chain or branched chain aliphatic group of from 2 to 8 carbon atoms.

Abstract: This invention is to provide a process for producing 2-amino-4,6-disubstituted nicotinic acid ester analogs and salts thereof, comprising the reaction shown by the following scheme. The ester analogs can be prepared in one pot, and in good yield by using tertiary alkyl cyanoacetate. Furthermore, the method is useful for preparing derivatives of various analogs of the ester, e.g. alkyl substituted and aryl substituted analogs.

Abstract: Encephalotoxin produced by activated mononuclear phagocytes is present in individuals having neurological disease including neurodegenerative and neuro-inflammatory diseases, such as Azlheimer's disease (AD), HIV-1-associated dementia (HAD), Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, prion disease, mild congnitive/motor dysfunction, acute stroke, acute trauma, or neuro-AIDS. Biochemical detection of encephalotoxin according to the methods of the invention will allow diagnosis of neurological disease in early, presymptomatic stages, thereby allowing early intervention in disease progression as well as identification of subjects or populations at risk for developing neurodegenerative disease. The methods of the invention also provide a mechanism for monitoring progression and treatment of neurological disease.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for the isothermal nitration of aromatic organic compounds, wherein an aromatic organic compound is brought into contact and reacted with a mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. The mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid, and the aromatic organic compound are brought into contact with each other through a mixing nozzle which comprises a substantially cylindrical tubular reactor and an annular gap which surrounds the tubular reactor. The aromatic organic compound flows through the tubular reactor, and the mixture of sulfuric acid and nitric acid flows through the annular gap, and they are mixed together upon emerging from the tubular reactor and the annular gap, wherein the ratio of the average rates of flow of the aromatic organic compound in the tubular reactor, and of the mixture of sulphuric acid and nitric acid in the annular gap ranges from 0.5:1 to 10:1.
