Abstract: The present invention includes an apparatus, system and method for the development and use of transcriptional modules by obtaining individual gene expression levels from cells obtained from one or more patients with a disease or condition; recording the expression value for each gene in a table that is divided into clusters; iteratively selecting gene expression values for one or more transcriptional modules by: selecting for the module the genes from each cluster that match in every disease or condition; removing the selected genes from the analysis; and repeating the process of gene expression value selection for genes that cluster in a sub-fraction of the diseases or conditions; and iteratively repeating the generation of modules.
Abstract: The present invention relates to defects in periaxin (PRX) associated with myelinopathies, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome and/or Dejerine-Sottas syndrome. Unrelated individuals having a myelinopathy from Dejerine-Sottas syndrome have recessive PRX mutations. The PRX locus maps to a region associated with a severe autosomal recessive demyelinating neuropathy and is also syntenic to the Prx location on murine chromosome 7.

Abstract: A multi-chamber container of the present invention is divided into a plurality of filling chambers 11, 12 by a seal 13, and has a container body 1 with the chambers 11, 12 filled with respective solutions, and a cover 2 that covers at least one of the chambers 11, 12 of the container body 1. The cover 2 includes a pair of rigid members 21 that sandwich the seal portion 13 from the outside, and seal portions 22 provided to close the rigid members 21. In this multi-chamber container, the cover 2 is held when the filling chambers 11, 12 are not opened in therebetween, while being dropped easily when the filling chambers 11, 12 are opened in therebetween and the thickness of the seal portion 13 increases.
Abstract: The present invention includes compositions and methods for delivering one or more active agents in vivo by contacting a target organ or tissue with a microbubble encapsulated active agent comprising a neutrally charged lipid microbubble loaded with cationic liposomes comprising one or more active agents and selectively releasing the active agents at the target by exposing the microbubble at the target with ultrasound, wherein the active agents remain protected in the microbubble until selectively release at the target.
Abstract: The present invention includes compositions and methods for the treatment, diagnosis and prognosis of cancers by detecting the level of IL-13 expression in cancerous cells in the tissue microenvironment as an indicator of controlling the type of immune response mounted against the cancer.
Abstract: Acquired and de novo endocrine resistance are major clinical problems in the management of breast cancer patients. Though the antiestrogen tamoxifen prolongs disease-free and overall survival in the adjuvant setting, and induces remissions in over half of the patients with estrogen receptor positive metastatic disease, all patients eventually acquire tamoxifen resistance. Furthermore, many of the resistant tumors actually appear to be stimulated by tamoxifen just as they are by estrogens. The present invention provides methods of predicting endocrine resistance comprising detecting the biological activity and/or expression of p38 MAPK and/or AIB1. The invention further provides methods of reducing, reversing, or preventing endocrine resistance comprising contacting a breast or prostate tumor with a p38 MAPK pathway inhibitor.
Abstract: A system and method for independently controlling the collimation and lateral positioning of a light beam comprises at least one acousto-optic deflector and a pair of counter propagating acoustic waves with offset frequencies. While the frequency offset controls the lateral positioning of the light beam, a frequency gradient across the acousto-optic deflectors controls the collimation of the light beam.

Abstract: An array coil to achieve more uniform RF excitation for high field magnetic resonance imaging. In the preferred embodiment, the array coil has a plurality of transmit-composite elements distributed around the object to be imaged. A composite element comprises up to three current loops preferably orthogonal to each another. The array coil has the capability to shape the distribution of all three orthogonal components (x, y, and z) of the RF B1 field.
Abstract: The intramuscular electroporated injection of a protease-resistant growth hormone-releasing hormone (“GHRH”) cDNA into rat dams at 16 days of gestation resulted in the enhanced long-term growth of the F1 offspring. The offspring were significantly heavier by one week of age and the difference was sustained to 10 weeks of age. Consistent with their augmented growth, plasma IGF-I concentration of the F1 progeny was increased significantly. The pituitary gland of the offspring was significantly heavier, and contained an increased number of somatotropes (cells producing GH) and lactotrophs (prolactin-secreting cells), and is indicative of an alteration in cell lineages. These unique findings demonstrate that enhanced GHRH expression in pregnant dams can result in intergenerational growth promotion, by altering development of the pituitary gland in the offspring.
Abstract: A system and a method for the relief of pain/irritation of the spine or for the prevention of degeneration of the spine. The system is designed to facilitate creep in the human spine in a way that can be self-administered and with which patients will readily comply. The apparatus comprises a base, an inclinable support surface pivotably connected to the base, said support surface capable of supporting the upper body of the person in a prone position, a support member coupled to the base and the support surface, and an actuator coupled to the support member for controlling the angle of inclination of the support surface to promote distraction of the spine. The method comprises positioning a person on the support surface and adjusting the angle of inclination thereof so that the device supports the upper body of the person and gravity causes distraction of the spine.
Abstract: The present invention includes an apparatus, kit and method for providing neural stimulation to reduce preterm labor contractions and thereby reduce subsequent preterm births. The present invention includes one or more implantable electrodes adapted for electrical communication with one or more sacral nerve roots and an electrical energy generator to produce one or more electrical signals in electrical communication with the one or more implantable electrodes.
Abstract: The present invention pertains to compositions and methods for plasmid-mediated supplementation. The compositions and method are useful for retarding the growth of the tumor, and retarding cachexia, wasting, anemia and other effects that are commonly associated in cancer bearing animals. Overall, the embodiments of the invention can be accomplished by delivering an effective amount of a nucleic acid expression construct that encodes a GHRH or functional biological equivalent thereof into a tissue of an animal and allowing expression of the encoded. gene in the animal. For example, when such a nucleic acid sequence is delivered into the specific cells of the tissue specific constitutive expression is achieved.

Abstract: The incorporation of one or more therapeutic agents on metallic and non-metallic medical prostheses is provided. The therapeutic agent can be used, for example, to prevent, treat, or reduce bacterial and fungal infections associated with these implants. Additionally, the therapeutic agents can be used to effect other therapeutic benefits. Specifically, a bilayer therapeutic coating is applied in two steps. Additionally, non-antimicrobial therapeutic agents may be incorporated in this coating to treat, prevent, modify, or stimulate certain clinical bioactivities.

Abstract: The present invention is designed to efficiently calculate isotopic distribution in order to simulate mass spectra data for any chemical compound of interest. The simulated spectra considers the various isotopes of the compound based upon a probability calculation that takes into consideration the natural abundance of each isotope of individual elements of the compound. The probability calculation generates a relative probability associated with each isotope species of the subject compound. The simulated spectra are displayed on an x-y coordinate illustrating the calculated formula weight on the abscissa (x-axis) and the intensity of the specific species on the ordinate (y-axis). This theoretical data is then compared to experimental data taken from a mass spectrometer in order to identify the chemical compound at issue.
