  • Patent number: 4837907
Abstract: A self-loading controlled deflection roll is rotatably mounted with non-self-aligning bearings at either end to bearing housings which, in turn, are pivotally-mounted to support stands. The stationary support beam extending through the roll is pivotally-mounted in the same support stands. At one end of the roll, a drive shaft having a drive gear engaging a ring gear which is mounted on the end of the roll shell concentric with its surface is provided to rotatably drive the roll shell while simultaneously permitting lateral movement of the roll shell relative to the support beam during the self-loading phase of roll operation.

  • Patent number: 4836894
Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for effectively controlling cross-machine moisture profile in a paper web undergoing processing, such as water-removal via a press nip. A compartmentalized system is provided in close proximity across a section of a traveling web undergoing dewatering whereby select size cross-machine compartments, for example, about 6" in width, are selectively provided with steam and/or air so as to control wet and/or dry streaks along the traveling web so that web areas opposite each compartment can be selectively heated for accentuated moistre removal or cooled for retarded water removal. In preferred embodiments, control of the profiling system occurs with the air of moisture sensors and a computer.

  • Patent number: 4835881
Abstract: A dryer section apparatus is disclosed for drying a web extending therethrough. The apparatus includes a plurality of lower dryer drums and a plurality of upper dryer drums. A lower felt partially wraps each lower dryer drum of the plurality of lower dryer drums and each lower intermediate roll of a plurality of lower intermediate rolls is disposed between adjacent lower dryer drums such that each alternate lower intermediate roll guides both the web and the lower felt. An upper felt partially wraps each of the upper dryer drums of the plurality of upper dryer drums. The apparatus also includes a plurality of upper intermediate rolls with each upper intermediate roll being disposed between adjacent upper dryer drums such that each alternate upper intermediate roll guides both the web and the felt so that the web is transferred in open draw between adjacent upper and lower dryer drums thereby minimizing the length of the open draw and inhibiting web flutter during transfer between upper and lower dryer drums.

  • Patent number: 4836388
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for separating material by length into first and second fractions containing, respectively, material longer than a specified length and material shorter than a specified length. The apparatus includes a plurality of generally parallel shafts having disks attached thereto. The disks are spaced on the shafts a distance approximately equal to one-half the specified length. Shaft diameters and shaft spacings are selected to cause material in the first fraction to remain supported by the shafts and to flow along the shaft surfaces from one shaft to the next adjacent downstream shaft, while material in the second fraction tilts and falls downwardly between adjacent shafts.

  • Patent number: 4830709
Abstract: A multi-ply paper web forming apparatus utilizes first and second forming wires which travel in a co-running path for a portion of their length and which form a throat into which an aqueous slurry of paper pulp fibers is introduced. The slurry is dewatered between the co-running first and second forming wires upwardly and downwardly to quickly produce a substantially formed, but still moist, top ply web which is carried on the second forming wire onto a base ply web which has previously been formed on the wire of a single wire former. The first surface of the top ply web is brought into ply bonding engagement with the surface of the base ply web to produce a composite multi-ply web which has superior overall ply bond, retention and dryness before leaving the web forming section of a papermaking machine.

  • Patent number: 4823688
Abstract: In a calendering apparatus for hot-calendering a paper web, the apparatus includes a rotatable calendering roll defining a smooth calendering surface. A backing roll rotatably cooperates with the calendering roll for defining therebetween a calendering nip for the passage therethrough of the web. An induction heater is disposed in close proximity to the calendering surface nip for inducing eddy currents within the calendering roll such that the calendering roll is heated. A blow box is disposed in close proximity to the calendering surface and between the heater and the nip. The blow box defines a plurality of compartments which are disposed in a cross-machine direction. Each of the compartments selectively blows a current of cooling air against the calendering surface for controlling the temperature of the calendering surface so that the temperature of the calendering surface adjacent to the nip is controlled in a cross-machine direction.

  • Patent number: 4807371
Abstract: An apparatus is described for maintaining a first and second lateral edge of web in close conformity with a dryer felt of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a first dryer drum which is rotatable about an axis which is parallel to the cross-machine direction of the web. A second dryer drum is rotatable about an axis which is spaced and parallel relative to the axis of the first dryer drum. An intermediate transfer roll has an axis of rotation disposed in a plane parallel to, and between, the axes of the first and second drums such that the web and the felt extend contiguously around the first dryer drum and then around the transfer roll and subsequently around the second drum in a serpentine configuration so that the transfer roll and the felt define therebetween a pocket.

  • Patent number: 4793899
Abstract: A coating press apparatus is disclosed for coating a first and second side of a pressed web formed in a forming section of a papermaking machine. The apparatus includes a first press roll which defines a smooth imperforate first surface. The first surface cooperates with the first side of the web. A first backing roll cooperates with the first press roll for defining therebetween a first nip for the passage therethrough of the web. A first felt supports the web during passage through the first nip and a first short-dwell coater applies a coating directly to the surface of the first press roll upstream relative to the first nip such that a smooth and even first layer of the coating substance is applied to the first side of the web during passage of the web through the first nip.

  • Patent number: 4790908
Abstract: An extended nip press has a looped belt mounted over a shoe having a concave surface which presses the belt against a mating surface on a roll to provide an extended nip. The shoe has a support which is movable in a skewing sense relative to the longitudinal axis of the roll. Lateral movement of the belt is monitored. When it has moved beyond predetermined limits in either direction, the shoe is skewed to alter the frictional forces on the belt as it passes over the shoe's surface. This controls the position of the belt and keeps it centered in the nip.

  • Patent number: 4783014
Abstract: A paper stock refiner provides low intensity treatment of pulp fiber to increase the strength characteristics of the pulp while reducing the specific energy required through increasing the number of refining surfaces. The number of refining surfaces is accomplished by providing a plurality of rotatable (30) and non-rotatable (36) refiner disks which are axially movable within a refiner, the rotatable disks being mounted on a torque transmitting section (28) of a shaft (26) and the non-rotatable disks being mounted against rotation on a plurality of supporting elements (44). In order to control the number of refiner bar crossings, the housing (12) may be opened and a desired number of refiner disks, both rotating and non-rotating, may be loaded into the refining chamber (16) on the shaft and the support elements, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4761309
Abstract: A coating apparatus is disclosed for applying a coating onto a surface of a moving web. The apparatus includes a backing member which defines a perforate surface such that when the member is connected to a source of partial vacuum, the web is drawn towards the perforate surface of the member. A coating blade is disposed adjacent to the backing member such that the blade urges the web towards the perforate surface. A permeable belt extends around the backing member with the belt being disposed between the web and the backing member such that when the source of partial vacuum is connected to the backing member, air flows through the belt and the perforate surface for drawing the web into close conformity with the belt. The belt and the web then move together in the same direction for inhibiting the buildup of deleterious material adjacent to the blade that would otherwise remain adjacent to the blade causing marking of the coating applied to the surface of the web by the blade.
