  • Patent number: 5241760
Abstract: A dryer apparatus is disclosed for drying a pressed web. The apparatus includes a plurality of single tier dryer sections in which successive sections dry alternate sides of the web, the web being transferred between successive sections without any open draw of the web such that the web is uniformly dried on both sides thereof while the web is restrained against cross-machine directional shrinkage. Each of the sections includes a single tier of dryers with an intermediate roll disposed between each adjacent dryer. A dryer felt extends in serpentine configuration around each dryer and roll such that the web is disposed between the felt and each dryer for drying one side of the web. The felt is also disposed between the roll and the web with the felt in direct contact with an alternate side of the web. The intermediate roll defines a plurality of circumferential grooves for diffusing boundary air following the felt that would otherwise tend to lift the web from the felt extending around the roll.

  • Patent number: 5240198
Abstract: A roller (10) used as support, backing or driven roller in winding devices, such as winders for winding wound rolls of paper coming from a papermaking machine, is composed of an outer cylindrical roller element (24), on which an elastic, flexible intermediate layer (26) of elastomeric material is applied. On the intermediate layer (26), an external roller mantle (33) of thin-wall spring steel is provided that can be deformed in a plane perpendicular to the axis due to the contact pressure of the roll (2) and can be pressed against the outer perimeter of the roll (2). A broad contact region is created, which leads to a lower specific nip pressure and to a lower roll hardness. Channels (27, 28) in the intermediate layer (26) serve to increase the flexibility and cooling.

  • Patent number: 5193258
Abstract: A self-loading type of controlled deflection roll includes, in a preferred embodiment, a pivot assembly which is pivotally mounted to a support shaft near either end of the roll. The roll includes a roll shell having an extension attached to either end which extends co-axially outwardly from the roll shell. These axial extensions of the roll shell are supported by non-self-aligned bearings on the pivot assemblies near either end of the roll. Intermediate the end of the roll shell and the bearings is a heat barrier which prevents hot hydraulic fluid within the interior of the roll from contacting or heating the bearings which rotatably support the roll shell about the self-loading assembly. The bearings can, therefore, be provided with a lubricant which is sealed and shielded from the temperature of the hydraulic fluid within the roll.
