  • Patent number: 5881472
Abstract: A ventilator apparatus is disclosed for supplying air from a source of pressurized air between a dryer and a web supported by a felt extending around a roll of a single tier drying section. The apparatus includes a housing which is connected to the source of pressurized air. The housing defines a nozzle for directing a flow therethrough of a current of air. The flow is directed from the nozzle towards a diverging nip defined between the dryer and the web supported by the felt when the felt diverges away from the dryer prior to the felt extending around the roll. The arrangement is such that the flow of air compensates for an underpressure generated by the felt when diverging away from the dryer so that fluttering of the web is inhibited.

  • Patent number: 5882482
Abstract: A headbox has a tube bank of tubes arranged in machine direction rows. The tubes extend from an outlet wall of a header to the inlet of a nozzle. The upper and lower walls of the nozzle converge toward the nozzle outlet, and planes extending from the walls (nozzle roof and apron) converge to define an imaginary centerline extending in the cross-machine direction. The rows of tubes lie along radially extending planes defined with respect to the centerline. The injection ends of the tubes define a cylindrical surface extending between the nozzle walls. Stock from each tube is directed radially toward the centerline along flow paths of equal length. Trailing vanes may be positioned between the rows of tubes so that each flow experiences almost identical flow boundary conditions as it moves towards the nozzle outlet, hence contributing to more uniform fiber orientation in the resultant paper web.

  • Patent number: 5873180
Abstract: A single tier dryer system has dryer rolls with a reversing roll positioned between each pair to transfer and wrap the dryer felt and paper web against the next dryer roll. A vacuum box is positioned between the dryer rolls and over the reversing roll to hold the web on the dryer felt by vacuum. Threading of a tail from the web is accomplished by blowing the web tail off a first dryer roll's surface with a jet of air positioned adjacent to the position on the dryer roll where the dryer felt leaves the dryer roll's surface. The vacuum box is divided by a baffle to isolate a portion of the vacuum box near the front of the dryer rolls, and a damper is positioned within the reversing roll to increase the vacuum in the isolated portion of the vacuum box to facilitate threading of the tail.

  • Patent number: 5863120
Abstract: A rotor shaft extends axially through an interior cylinder defined by a housing. The shaft is mounted for rotation at one end. A flow of medium consistency stock is introduced axially to the cylinder, while a chemical inlet supplies bleaching chemicals axially to a rotor mounted on the shaft. The head of the rotor has turbine passages which accelerate the impinging bleaching chemicals along radial lines to be thus distributed across the whole aperture of the cylinder. Tapered vanes extend from the rotor adjacent to the rotor head and create circulating vortices which mix the bleach chemicals with the pulp. As the tapered vanes extend radially toward the cylindrical walls of the cylindrical housing, the vortices extend to the housing walls. The finely mixed bleaching chemicals and pulp are then forced through a foraminous cylinder which separates the interior of the cylindrical housing from an outlet volute by vanes which extend to near engagement with the foraminous cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5843529
Abstract: A pre-metering rod is located between a coating applicator and an air knife, and replaces the smoothing roll in some existing air knife applications. The pre-metering rod consists of a small diameter rod of about one and one-half inches in diameter that rotates at 10-500 rpm against the direction of the coating layer on the web. The web is wrapped around a portion of the circumference amounting to about twenty-five degrees of the rod's surface as it travels over the rod. The rod is supported in a rod holder supported on a support beam. Actuators move the support beam away from the web for threading and maintenance, and towards the web to engage the rod with the web. The combination of the rod diameter, the amount of wrap on the rod, and the speed of the rod rotation determine the amount of pre-metering of the coating, which determines the thickness of the coating layer on the web that is presented to the air knife section. As a result, the thickness of the coating layer can be decreased.

  • Patent number: 5840156
Abstract: A mixture of air and paper stock made from recycled paper from which the ink particles have been chemically released is injected into a cylindrical processing vessel. Added surfactants create a foam from the air as it rises through the stock and cause the ink particles to adhere to the air bubbles, resulting in a foam containing a concentrated fraction of the ink particles with some included fibers. The foam rises to the top of the vessel, and carries with it ink particles. Additional air injection ports can be used to increase the amount of foam generated and the amount of ink removed. Flow of stock and foam from the vessel can be controlled by adjusting valves on the stock and foam outlets. Flotation sensors allow the foam head to be maintained at the stock level by controlling the rate foam is withdrawn through the foam outlets.

  • Patent number: 5829597
Abstract: A air density separation has a vertical air separation chamber that opens downwardly to allow rejected material to fall out the chamber through the open bottom. The air density separator is configured to recirculate the air and entrained fines, and so minimizes emissions and costly air treatment processes. The air separation chamber is connected by a first duct to a cyclone. A fan is positioned adjacent the lower end of the air separation chamber, and draws air through a second duct out of the cyclone for reintroduction into the air chamber. The fan by way of the cyclone draws air through the first duct from the air separation chamber. The fan exhausts into the vertical air separation chamber below the material infeed through a plenum. An oscillating screen composed of bars extends into the separation chamber of the air density separator and is used to disperse material into the separation chamber.

  • Patent number: 5829709
Abstract: A winding machine for winding up webs, possibly longitudinally divided webs, and preferably paper webs. The winding machine comprises two support rollers which support, in a winding bed, the roll to be produced and of which possibly one or both comprise casings which can be deformed, preferably to different degrees. During the winding process, the web running through the spacer gap between the two support rollers partially wraps around one of the two support rollers. The winding machine further comprises a space delimited by the two support rollers, the partly formed roll, and this space has sealed closures on its ends and a sealed closure below the spacer gap between the two support rollers. Finally, the winding machine generates excess pressure in this space in order to balance the inherent weight of the roll.

  • Patent number: H1789
Abstract: The top and bottom felts at the web transfer between two dryer sections in a single tier papermaking dryer are spaced by pivoting the vacuum roll over which the felt and web move. The vacuum roll is mounted to two pivot arms which are driven by inflatable air rides to alternately incline the roll toward the downstream felt, forming a sandwich of the two felts and the web, and to a spaced position. The short motion of the vacuum roll allows standard felt stretchers to be used, and permits rapid adjustment of the felt spacing.
