Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for stabilizing a rotor about its geometric center in a magnetic bearing system at a constant rotor speed. In the method, the controller for controlling the magnetic bearing uses an adaptive control algorithm which simultaneously identifies and compensates for synchronous sensor runout and rotor mass unbalance while determining a control action that drives the rotor rotating at a constant speed to its geometric center. The identification of sensor runout and mass unbalance is by varying the magnetic stiffness which is achieved by perturbation of the bias currents in opposing electromagnet coils in a manner that does not alter the equilibrium of the rotor while it is rotating at a constant speed.

Abstract: Nanomechanisms are employed in nanomemory elements which, in turn, are employable in nanoscale memory devices. A nanoscale particle is enclosed within a nonocapsule to create a bistable device which is both readable and writable in a variety of ways. A nonamechanism for use in a nanoscale memory element includes a first element in the form of a nanoassembly having a cavity and second element in the form of a nanostructure which is removeably disposed within the cavity. In one embodiment, the nanoassembly is demonstrated as a C480 capsule and the nanostructure is demonstrated as a charged hd 60 fullerene molecule. The nanoscale memory devices combine high switching speed, high packing density and stability with non0volatility of the stored data.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a modified enzyme of a non-heme iron (II) dependent family of oxygenases and oxidases which renders the enzyme dependent on bicarbonate for activity. In a preferred embodiment, the modification is an arginine, lysine, or other amino acid that is two amino acid residues upstream of a histidine residue that is an iron ligand in the enzyme and is one of the histidine residues of the 2-histidine-1-aspartic acid trifacial motif. In particular, the modified enzymes are isopenicillin N synthetase, deacetoxycephalosporin C synthetase, and deacetoxycephalosporin C synthetase/deacetylcephalosporin C synthetase which are used to make antibiotics. The present invention further provides a method for making antibiotics using a modified enzyme such as isopenicillin N synthetase, deacetoxycephalosporin C synthetase, and deacetoxycephalosporin C synthetase/deacetylcephalosporin C synthetase wherein the modification renders the enzyme dependent on bicarbonate for activity.

Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for detection of volatile products from a sample using a transducer which changes voltage as a function of contact of the volatile products with the transducer to produce a gas signature of the volatile products and a spectrophotometer to analyze the volatile products to produce a spectral footprint of the volatile products. The apparatus and method are used to detect spoilage of a biological material, such as a food. The apparatus is also used to detect microorganisms and by comparing the gas signature and spectral footprint to a library of gas signatures and spectral footprints, the apparatus enables identification of the microorganisms and in particular identification of pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a sensor for measuring the instantaneous rate of mass flow and the cumulative mass flow in steady or unsteady flows of single-phase liquids or gases in a duct. By measuring the shear stress or the streamwise pressure gradient at the duct wall, and relating it to mass flow through solutions to the Navier Stokes equations of fluid mechanics, information on mass flow through the entire duct cross sectional area is deduced.

Abstract: A neutral templating route to mesoporous molecular sieves based on H-bonding and self-assembly between neutral primary amine or diamine surfactants (S°) and neutral inorganic precursors (I°) has been used to prepare hexagonal and lamellar mesoporous silicas with site isolated transition metal centers. This templating approach allows for the preparation of hexagonal or hexagonal-like mesoporous oxidation catalysts with large framework wall thickness of at least about 17 Å, small elementary particle size (≦400 Å), and unique combinations of framework-confined mesopores and textural mesopores while at the same time providing for facile recovery of the neutral template by simple solvent extraction.
