  • Patent number: 4413459
Abstract: A laminated wooden structural assembly is disclosed comprising at least one multi-ply wooden web member formed of a pair of spaced outer layers and at least one inner core layer bonded between the outer layers, and at least one wooden flange member arranged adjacent one longitudinal edge portion of the web member. The web and flange members are connected by joint means including a straight machine tapered longitudinal slot contained in one surface of the flange member, and a machine tapered longitudinal edge portion of the web member that is inserted with a friction fit into the slot. Each inner core layer of the web member is arranged with its grain direction extending toward the longitudinal edge portion of the web member, the outer layers being arranged with their grain directions extending parallel to the flange member. The flange member is arranged with its grain direction extending in a direction longitudinally and parallel with the grain direction of said web outer layers.

  • Patent number: 4411726
Abstract: A composite container is disclosed having a synthetic plastic end closure member spin-bonded to the thermoplastic synthetic plastic inner liner layer of a composite container body wall. The synthetic plastic end closure member includes annular downwardly depending inner fin and outer chime portions which are concentrically spaced to define therebetween an annular groove. One of the body and end members is rotated relative to the other member when they are in spaced vertical alignment, whereupon the members are axially displaced together to wedge the upper end of the body member into the annular groove of the end closure member. During this spin bonding process, the fin portion of the end closure member is supported against radial inward deflection, whereby the spinning frictional engagement between the fin portion of the end closure member and the inner liner layer of the body member causes softening and subsequent bonding of the fin portion to the inner liner layer.

  • Patent number: 4376506
Abstract: A composite container for fluent materials in the liquid or semi-frozen state is disclosed, together with a method for making the same. The container includes a vertically arranged body member that is flared at its upper end, and an end closure member is provided including a circular central panel portion arranged within and extending across the upper end of the body member, annular chuck wall portion extending upwardly from the central panel portion adjacent the flared portion of the body member, and an annular connecting flange portion extending radially outwardly from the upper end of the chuck wall portion. The invention is characterized in that the connecting flange and chuck wall portions cooperate with the flared portion of the body member to define an annular space in which is arranged a resilient annular mass of sealing material.

  • Patent number: 4375969
Abstract: An improved composite container is disclosed including a tubular fibrous body wall having at its upper end a reversely curled portion the upper extremity of which is radially inwardly compressed in such a manner as to form an annular external locking projection by means of which a synthetic plastic closure cap may be fastened to close the container. Preferably the closure member is connected with the container by a tearable tamperproof connection including a radially inwardly directed annular rib that is locked beneath the annular body projection to maintain the closure cap on the container. A method is also disclosed for forming the container body, including the steps of radially outwardly curling the upper end of the body member, radially inwardly compressing the upper extremity of the reversely curled portion, and mounting a synthetic plastic snap-type closure member on the compressed curled end.

  • Patent number: 4363404
Abstract: An end closure member is disclosed for closing the bottom of an institutional-size composite container for frozen liquid or fluent materials (such as eggs removed from the shell), characterized in that the end closure member includes a center panel portion, an annular rim portion, and a vertical intermediate tubular portion that connects the center panel portion with, and at a lower elevation than, the rim portion, whereby during the subsequent freezing of the product within the container, the freezing progresses upwardly from the central panel portion, thereby relieving stress on the connection between the bottom end member and the composite body wall. The bottom end closure member includes a stacking rib adapted for insertion within a corresponding stacking recess contained within the container upper closure member.

  • Patent number: 4259885
Abstract: Portable cutting apparatus is disclosed for turning either the outer peripheral surface of a cylindrical workpiece, such as a journal, or the annular end face of a tubular workpiece, such as the flanged mouth of a retort or the like. A hollow drum, which is rotatably driven around a fixed shaft, carries a change speed gear box for reciprocating a tool holder also carried by the drum. The tool holder is an interchangeable attachment for the drum and depending on the attachment used, the tool is movable in planes either normal to or concentric about the axis of rotation of the drum. The gear box is geared to the fixed shaft and therefore driven by rotation of the drum.

  • Patent number: 4258859
Abstract: An improved scored metal end closure member for composite containers and the like is disclosed, together with the method and apparatus for forming the same, characterized in that a fully or partially removable panel portion is defined in the central panel portion by a scoreline of novel no-fin configuration. The scoreline--which is formed in one horizontal surface of the central panel portion by a truncated wedge score indenting device--has a generally trapezoidal configuration including a flat bottom wall, and generally divergent side walls. The opposite horizontal surface of the central panel portion is stepped to define a region of reduced thickness that extends from a location opposite one edge of the scoreline bottom wall in a direction away from the scoreline. Consequently, during progressive removal of the removable panel portion, the formation of sharp fins or projections on the residual lip remaining on the metal end is avoided.

  • Patent number: 4241834
Abstract: A composite container is disclosed that includes a helically-wound label layer which contains a line of perforations that extends circumferentially adjacent and spaced from a metal end closure member, thereby to define a line of tear along which the label layer may be torn from the container. By the provision of the perforated tear line, the requirement of a circumferential collar cut in the container is avoided, thereby permitting the use of a thinner fibrous body wall layer. Preferably the line of perforations is discontinuous to define an imperforate portion of the label layer which is bonded in straddling relation across the helical butt joint contained in the fibrous body wall layer.
