  • Patent number: 3981433
Abstract: An easy-open composite container is disclosed having an unbonded helical butt joint that extends the length of the container, characterized by the provision of an impervious inner liner layer having a helical folded portion which is coextensive with and extends the length of the unbonded butt joint. A peelable outer reinforcing or wrapper layer bonded to the outer surface of the fibrous body wall layer normally holds the edges of the butt joint together. Upon removal of the outer reinforcing layer, the ends of the container may be twisted in opposite directions to open the unbonded butt joint and to expand and rupture the inner liner layer folded portion. In the case where products under pressure, such as refrigerated dough products, are packaged in the container, upon removal of the outer reinforcing layer, the products expand to automatically open the butt joint and to expand and rupture the inner liner folded portion.

  • Patent number: 3973723
Abstract: A container blank is disclosed for forming a carton having bottom, side and end walls, and top flaps connected with the side walls, said top flaps having locking tabs adapted for insertion within locking slots contained in fold line means at the upper edges of the end walls. Each locking tab is folded to define inner first and outer second tab portions, said second tab portion being adapted to resiliently expand outwardly to a position in which the free extremity thereof extends into a locking recess contained in the end wall. To release the second locking tab portion, an object such as the user's finger is inserted into a releasing aperture contained in the end wall to displace the second locking tab inwardly, thereby to permit opening of the container top flaps.

  • Patent number: 3961566
Abstract: An assembly of a patch top container end and a reusable circumferentially-flanged closure member is disclosed, together with a method for forming the container end and introducing the same within the closure member, characterized in that the container end includes a circumferential tab portion which is folded back through an angle of 180.degree. to a position between the body portion of the container end and the body portion of the closure member. The closure member is then mounted on the open end of a container with the closure member flange extending about the container, the container end being bonded to the extremity of the container end by a temperature or pressure responsive material.

  • Patent number: 3934720
Abstract: A suspension box member for use as a base or platform of a shipping container is disclosed. The suspension box is made of fiberboard or other material which deflects to absorb shock and other forces which would otherwise be transmitted directly to the item being shipped. The suspension box is of relatively simple design, thus making it easily adaptable for use with various types of covers for the shipping container. Such covers may be in the form of a box with an open bottom, a slotted telescope cover for rectangular items or various form-fit covers, the latter being particularly suitable for upholstered chairs.

  • Patent number: 3933298
Abstract: An improved end seam construction for composite containers used in the packaging of hard to hold materials, such as materials under vacuum or pressure. The composite tubular body wall member includes at least one fibrous layer to the inner wall surface of which is bonded by a thermoplastic adhesive a metal liner layer that projects axially at at least one end a given distance beyond the fibrous layer. The end of the fibrous layer is deformed radially outwardly to define a funnel-shaped flange about which the projecting metal liner layer is deformed and compressed. The length of the projecting metal liner layer is such that when the metal-lined flange portion is connected by a rolled seam with the flange, the metal liner layer is compressed into surface-to-surface engagement with at least one surface of the curl portion of the metal end.
