Abstract: The present invention provides methods for treating reclaimed sand obtained from dismantled foundry molds and cores which contain a cured binder derived from an ester cured alkaline phenolic resin. Treatment of the reclaimed sand with a silane solution, particularly an aqueous solution, enhances the tensile strengths of foundry molds and cores produced therefrom beyond those obtained with untreated reclaimed sand. Methods for producing foundry cores and molds which incorporate such a treatment process are also provided by this invention as are raw batch formulations.
Abstract: The hardening of a composition containing a phenolic resin solution and a magnesia aggregate is effected by mixing into such composition at a pH of at least 4.5: a compound which provides an acetate, adipate, 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate, formate, glycolate, lactate, nitrate, benzenesulfonate, naphthalenesulfonate, methanesulfonate, phenolsulfonate, succinate, sulfamate, or toluenesulfonate anion to the composition; or a mixture of said compounds.
Abstract: There are disclosed methods and compositions for accelerating the hardening of phenolic resole resins having a pH of about 4.5 to 9.5 with lightburned magnesium oxide or magnesium hydroxide, with or without the addition of an ester functional hardening agent. Acceleration of hardening is achieved by incorporating into said compositions an effective quantity of a material which: increases the solubility of magnesium in the hardenable mixture; by certain amines; or by certain chelating agents. Accelerator compounds include those which provide chloride, sulfamate, nitrate, formate, and phosphite anions as well as selected tertiary amines.
Abstract: There is disclosed methods and compositions for retarding the room temperature hardening of phenolic resole resins when such resins are mixed with lightburned magnesium oxide with or without an ester functional hardening agent. Compounds which act as retarders include azelaic acid, salicylamide, sulfanilic acid, N-methylaniline, and 2,6-diethylaniline.
Abstract: Retarding the hardening of a composition containing a phenolic resin solution and a magnesia aggregate is effected by mixing into such composition a compound which provides an aspartate, fluoride, bifluoride, malate, tartrate, citrate, oxalate, phosphate or phosphonate anion to the composition or a tetraalkoxy silane, a partially hydrolyzed tetraalkoxy silane, 2-, or 4-chlorophenol, or 2'-, or 4'-hydroxyacetophenone.
Abstract: This invention is directed to an enamel paint receptive flexible laminate and its method of manufacture. The laminate is useful for making banners, flags, signs and the like that are decorated with enamel poster paints. The laminates of the present invention comprise a base fabric material, a first film coating of a plasticized polyvinyl chloride and a second coating of thermosetting vinyl acrylic copolymer. The secondary coatings comprise a polyester-based aliphatic urethane acrylate or methacrylate oligomer; an acrylated or methacrylated compound; and a photoinitiator. Also disclosed are optical fibers coated with the secondary coating alone or with the primary and secondary coatings of the invention.
Abstract: There are disclosed methods and compositions for room temperature hardening of phenolic resole resin refractory compositions containing a magnesium oxide hardening agent alone or together with an organic ester. The resin is a low viscosity, low molecular weight resin having a high free phenol content. The magnesium hardening agent has a surface area of at least 20 square meters per gram. The compositions provide adequate working times and room temperature hardening within 24 hours.
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for improving the slittability and subsequent wind-up of a roll of clear plastic multilayer coextrusion film by the addition to the skin layer of a slitting aid. The slitting aid is an inorganic filler material the presence of which in the skin layer reduces or eliminates telescoping of the rolled coextruded film, facilitates faster line speeds, and allows the reduction of taper tension as the wind-up process progresses.
Abstract: An extensible and pasteurizable radiation curable coating for metal and a process for preparing a metal article coated therewith are provided. The composition comprises a bulky acrylate or methacrylate monomer; a specific combination of oligomers; and an acidic adhesion promoter. Optionally, the composition may comprise one or more additives such as a photoinitiator; abrasion resistance, slip, and flow-out additives; wetting promoters; and extender resin. The process comprises the steps of applying a coating to one surface of a metal article and curing the coating, wherein the coating is as defined above.
Abstract: The invention relates to a dried, high protein food product derived from phosphate-modified milk protein concentrate (MPC) rather than from casein. The high protein food product is preferably spray dried, and is useful as a non-feathering coffee whitener. The non-feathering and spray drying properties are the results of the inclusion of a phosphate salt.

Abstract: A low temperature continuous frying process is used to make potato chips which are similar in taste and texture to those produced by the slow-cooked batch or kettle process. Potato slices are conveyed through first, second and third frying zones in a heated liquid frying medium, and the frying medium is admitted separately into each zone at a rate and temperature such that the potato slices are exposed first to a decrease and then to an increase in the temperature of the frying medium over time. The potato slices take on a pliable and shape-holding consistency as they are conveyed through the second frying zone, and folded potato chips may be obtained by agitating and compacting the potato slices as they are conveyed through this zone. The agitation and compaction may be carried out by rotating paddle assemblies arranged longitudinally in the frying vessel. Each paddle assembly comprises a rotatable shaft to which a number of vanes are affixed in a helical pattern.
