    Abstract: It has now been found that when there is a partial or complete replacement of the sodium hydroxide that is used to make a sodium phenolate resole resin by a molar equivalent of potassium hydroxide, a far faster curing resin is obtained. Such potassium-modified phenolic resins exhibit significant improvement in cure speed without loss of flowability. To the contrary, these resins act as though they were lower molecular weight condensation products. Reduced application rates are possible. The combination of faster cure and lower application rates has allowed such resins to be used as effective adhesives for plywood, for example, with veneer and interior plies having a higher moisture content than was previously possible. Generally, resins according to the invention may contain from about 1% to about 14%, and preferably from about 1% to about 7% by weight, of potassium hydroxide, or more.

    Abstract: It has been discovered that dried extruded pasta shapes prepared in certain ways display a high toleration for exposure to water at temperatures of less than boiling. This toleration is conveniently evaluated by cooking in a microwave over and then extracting with room temperature water to determine if the starch loss is less than 7.0 weight percent. This toleration is obtained by exposing the extruded pasta shapes to temperatures of about 180.degree. F. or greater, temperatures of about 165.degree. F. or greater if the pasta contains a low temperature coagulatable protein such as egg whites or simple room temperature aging if the pasta contains both a low temperature coagulatable protein and a sulfhydryl reducing agent such as 1-cysteine hydrochloride. This toleration makes the pasta amenable to a number of cooking procedures such as presoaking in cold water prior to cooling (thus dramatically reducing the cooking time), and cooking in a microwave oven.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a shelf stable, filled pasta product and a process for preparing same. A pasta casing is prepared from a dough of flour, water and optionally eggs, and a filling material of, for example, beef, chicken or cheese, is placed inside the pasta dough casing. During drying, an equilibration of moisture contents occurs between the pasta and the filling material whereby a final moisture content of about 18-22% by weight and a water activity (A.sub.w) of not more than 0.85 are achieved. By this process is produced a filled pasta product with non-refrigerated shelf life exceeding nine months.

    Abstract: This invention relates to ethyleneurea-glutaraldehyde resins, urea-ethyleneurea-glutaraldehyde resins, their synthesis, as well as their application as an adhesive for wood panel manufacture. Molar ratio of ethyleneurea to glutaraldehyde can range from 0.3 to 3.5. Urea incorporated into ethyleneurea-glutaraldehyde resin can be high as two times the moles of glutaraldehyde used in the formulation and can be introduced at any stage during the reaction course, simply post added, or any combination of the above.

    Abstract: Fully cooked, starchy foodstuffs, such as rice and pasta, are preserved against microbiological spoilage by treatment with a predetermined quantity of an edible acid. Packages of fully cooked starchy foodstuffs are provided which are self-stable for periods in excess of 6 months and are neutralized to a proper pH to avoid sourness. Ready-to-eat meals of neutralized acid preserved starchy foodstuffs are also provided. Edible alkaline neutralizing agents are used to balance the pH. Also provided are methods for producing shelf-stable packages of fully cooked, starchy foodstuffs wherein measured quantities of acid are introduced to fully cooked, starchy foodstuffs to inhibit microbiological growth.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to phenolic resin compositions and methods for making cured phenolic resin compositions. The phenolic resin compositions of this invention comprise an esterified phenolic compound and a base and optionally an unesterified phenolic resole resin. The composition cures in the presence of water or other polar solvent. The esterified phenolic compound contains at least one phenolic hydroxyl group or an esterified phenolic hydroxyl group and further contains at least one esterified methylol group positioned ortho or para to a phenolic hydroxyl group or an esterified phenolic group.The compounds find particular use in bonding refractory materials, such as sand, in the production of foundry moulds and cores and in treating subterranean formations. These composition have the advantage that cure can be obtained at room temperature without the use of strong alkali. The use of this system also prevents the release of alcohols during the saponification stage of the ester cure process.

    Abstract: A phenolic resin composition comprises an ester-curable phenol-aldehyde resin in alkaline aqueous solution wherein the phenol-aldehyde resin is a methylolated phenolic novolak resin. Preferably, during manufacture of the methylolated phenolic novolak resin, unreacted phenol is removed. The composition may be employed, for reaction with an organic ester hardener, as a binder in the production of foundry moulds and cores having high strength. The further incorporation of an aryloxy alcohol in the novolak resin binder additionally improves the final strength of products obtained by a gas curing technique using ester vapor, such as that of methyl formate.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a microwave cooked pasta product is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of (a) combining flour, egg whites, water, and optionally whole eggs, and a dibasic or tribasic organic acid derivative such as a tricarboxylic acid ester derivative, to form a paste, (b) drying the paste to produce pasta at drying temperatures of 100.degree. to 130.degree. F., (c) optionally soaking the pasta in hot or cold temperature liquid for a period of time sufficient to at least partially hydrate the paste, (d) heating the pasta for a period of time sufficient to cook the pasta, e.g. about 1 to 2 minutes. A preferred acid derivative is triethyl citrate. The heating can be achieved by exposure to microwave radiation. The cooked pasta is characterized by a starch loss upon cooking of less than about 8% by weight, based on uncooked pasta weight, and by texture superior to that obtained without the dibasic or tribasic organic acid derivative.
