  • Patent number: 8208449
Abstract: A novel solution is presented in which a MAC (Medium Access Controller) is implemented that includes multiple functionality types. This MAC may include functionality supporting communication according to one or more of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) related standards and also to one or more of the standards generated by the IEEE 802.15.3 PAN (Personal Area Network) working group. By providing this dual functionality of a multi-mode WLAN/PAN MAC, a communication device may adaptively change the manner in which it communicates with other communication devices. For example, in an effort to maximize throughput and overall efficiency of communication within a communication system, certain of the various devices may change from using the WLAN related standards to using the PAN related standards, and vice versa, based on any one or more of a variety of operational parameters including system configuration.

  • Patent number: 8208530
Abstract: An apparatus and method for correcting IQ imbalance are presented. An exemplary receiver for processing I and Q signals from a tuner includes: a non-decision directed (NDD) imbalance canceller coupled to receive the I and Q signals, and a decision directed (DD) imbalance canceller coupled to the non-decision directed imbalance canceller. The DD imbalance canceller converges after the NDD imbalance canceller converges, so as to correct IQ imbalances in the receiver. An exemplary method for processing I and Q signals from a tuner includes: (a) converging a NDD imbalance canceller to correct a majority of IQ imbalances, and (b) subsequently converging a DD imbalance canceller to correct a remainder of IQ imbalances not corrected in step (a). The apparatus and method correct frequency-dependent and frequency-independent IQ imbalances.

  • Patent number: 8208462
Abstract: A second output transmission signal (“TX2”) added to a line driver is a scaled version of the main output transmission signal (“TX1”). TX2 is scaled from TX1 by a variable scale factor K. An adaptive hybrid circuit subtracts TX1 and TX2 from a line signal carrying both a line transmission signal and a line received signal (“RX”). A programmable impedance Ztune is coupled between the TX2 output of the line driver and the RX output of the adaptive hybrid circuit. A transmission echo in the output RX signal is measured. K and Ztune are then adaptively tuned to minimize the transmission echo. The hybrid in this case becomes a 4-port network, one port specifically added to adaptively cancel the transmission echo in the RX output of the adaptive hybrid circuit. Alternatively, the hybrid may be a 3-port hybrid including variable impedances to cancel the line transmission signal.

  • Patent number: 8208863
Abstract: A Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver includes a baseband processor, a receiver section, and a transmitter section. The receiver section communicatively couples to the baseband processor and includes a plurality of tuned RF circuits. The transmitter section communicatively couples to the baseband processor and includes a plurality of tuned RF circuits. In a calibration operation, the transmitter section applies a RF test signal to its plurality of tuned RF circuits. The baseband processor applies a plurality of tuning control settings to each the tuned RF circuit. The baseband processor, for each of the plurality of tuning control settings, measures an output of the tuned RF circuit. The baseband processor selects a tuning control setting for the tuned RF circuit based upon at least one measured output of the tuned RF circuit. Finally, the baseband processor is operable to apply a selected tuning control setting to the tuned RF circuit.

  • Patent number: 8208857
Abstract: A method for successive interference cancellation in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems is provided that uses variable interferer weights. This method allows interfering signals to be cancelled in order to recover a transmitted data signal. This method involves receiving the data signal subject to interference from at least one interfering signal. A first interfering signal is identified. Then an interferer weight coefficient associated with the first interfering signal is generated. This allows the first interfering signal to be cancelled from the received data signal using the interferer weight coefficient. These processes may then be reiterated for other interfering signals. It is then possible to recover the transmitted data signal from the received data signal.

  • Patent number: 8208879
Abstract: A method for processing signals in a receiver includes receiving a plurality of wireless signals via a plurality of M receive antennas coupled to M corresponding signal amplifiers. The method may also include measuring corresponding signal strengths of M signals generated when each of M phase-shifters is coupled to each of the M receive antennas, while one or more of the M signal amplifiers are disabled. One of the M generated signals may be selected for processing without the use of an antenna switch, where the selecting may be based on the measured signal strength. Each of the plurality of received wireless signals may be amplified prior to the measuring. One or both of an in-phase (I) component and/or a quadrature (Q) component may be generated for each of the M generated signals.

  • Patent number: 8204537
Abstract: A wireless device includes processing circuitry and a Radio Frequency (RF) receiver section. The processing circuitry determines a set of information signals for receipt, the set of information signals carried by a RF Multiple Frequency Bands Multiple Standards (MFBMS) signal having a plurality of information signal frequency bands.
