  • Patent number: 8198868
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed to restore or recharge one or more cells of a battery. A switching module sources an element charging current from a first input voltage to the battery when a charging control signal is at a first logical level or sinks an element discharging current from the battery to a second input voltage when the charging control signal is at a second logical level. A controller module provides the charging control signal based upon a comparison of a reference voltage and a control voltage pulse, the control voltage pulse being generated by the controller module in response to a replica current, the replica current being proportional to the element charging current. A feedback module compares a voltage of the battery to a reference voltage to provide a charging error signal.

  • Patent number: 8199770
Abstract: An Ethernet network comprises multi-rate link partners that may be operable to communicate symmetrically and/or asymmetrically via any of a plurality of channels. The multi-rate link partners may monitor one or more factors that may affect their power consumption and/or energy efficiency. During operation, an uplink and/or downlink communication rate may be configured, based on the monitoring, to enable asymmetrical data rate operation. The monitored factors may comprise prior or current data rates, bit error rate, packet error rate, latency, queued data and/or tasks, for example. The multi-rate link partners may comprise a twisted pair PHY, an optical PHY or a backplane PHY. In order to reduce power consumption and/or improve energy efficiency, one or more of the uplink communication rate and/or the downlink communication rate may be lowered. • Patent number: 8201045
Abstract: A method and a system for decoding information signals encoded in accordance with a multi-state encoding scheme and transmitted over a multi-dimensional transmission channel by computing a distance of a received word from a codeword. One-dimensional (1D) input signals are processed in a pair of symbol decoders, implemented as look-up tables, to produce a pair of 1D errors, with each representing a distance metric between the input signal and a symbol in one of two disjoint symbol-subsets. The 1D errors are combined based on the multi-state encoding scheme in order to produce a set of multi-dimensional error terms. Each of the multi-dimensional error terms corresponds to a distance between a received word and a nearest codeword.

  • Patent number: 8199833
Abstract: A digital electronic device includes a time shifter/tone adapter that eliminates unwanted audio effects at recipient device, that includes stutter and loss of audio synchronization, as a result of video quality adaptation (the video quality adapter varies frame rate, pixel and color resolutions without having a discernable difference in picture quality, that is, drops many frames in every frame set). The tone adaptation involves gradual frequency shifting, that is, gradual up shifting until synchronization with video is obtained (time shifting), then gradual down shifting. The recipient device (or a set top box) may contain a time shifter/tone adapter that eliminates unwanted audio effects at the recipient devices that may include stutter and loss of audio synchronization, as a result of loss of packets in channel.

  • Publication number: 20120142291
Abstract: Various embodiments of the present invention recognize at least two zones of operation for a communication device. In a first zone, which is sufficiently spaced away from a human head or body that SAR limits will be met, transmit power delivered to an antenna of a communication device may be maximized within any other constraints under which the communication device operates. In a second zone, which is not sufficiently spaced away from a human head or body, transmit power is redistributed such that SAR limitations are met without affecting the transmit power control loop of the communication device. For example, a second antenna physically disposed at a different location within the communication device may be used either instead of, or in addition to, the first transmit antenna in order that the SAR limits are met.

  • Patent number: 8195117
Abstract: An integrated receiver with channel selection and image rejection substantially implemented on a single CMOS integrated circuit is described. A receiver front end provides programmable attenuation and a programmable gain low noise amplifier. Frequency conversion circuitry advantageously uses LC filters integrated onto the substrate in conjunction with image reject mixers to provide sufficient image frequency rejection. Filter tuning and inductor Q compensation over temperature are performed on chip. The filters utilize multi track spiral inductors. The filters are tuned using local oscillators to tune a substitute filter, and frequency scaling during filter component values to those of the filter being tuned. In conjunction with filtering, frequency planning provides additional image rejection. The advantageous choice of local oscillator signal generation methods on chip is by PLL out of band local oscillation and by direct synthesis for in band local oscillator.

  • Patent number: 8194707
Abstract: An embodiment of the invention may provide a method for predicting buffer size in a system, where multiple encoded bit streams may be multiplexed into a single bit stream. The multiple encoded bit streams may comprise either a constant or a variable rate. Notwithstanding, predicting the buffer size required for encoding, multiplexing and/or decoding prevents overflow and underflow of the buffer. At the demultiplexer, each decoder may have a buffer and there may not be any buffering prior to multiplexing. A plurality of MPEG encoded data bit streams may be multiplexed into a single multiplexed MPEG encoded data bit stream. A size of buffers utilized to buffer the multiplexed MPEG encoded data bit stream may be determined based on a queuing model.
