  • Patent number: 8787862
Abstract: A receiver uses a local oscillator to receive data transmitted via a combination of radio frequency signals using carrier aggregation. Each radio frequency signal occupies a respective radio frequency band and the radio frequency bands are arranged in two groups, a first group and a second group, separated in frequency by a first frequency region, each of the groups including one or more radio frequency bands and the first group occupying a wider frequency region than the second group. The radio frequency signals are processed using the local oscillator by setting the local oscillator, during the processing, to a frequency that is offset from the center of a band defined by outer edges of the frequency regions occupied by the two groups.

  • Patent number: 8787184
Abstract: A wireless communication device determines its location and communicates the location to other local devices utilizing a nonstandard, standard and/or proprietary protocol in combination with another protocol such as a Bluetooth, RFID, IEEE 802.11 and/or a cellular phone protocol. The location may be determined utilizing a GNSS receiver and/or network device information. A new location may be determined based on the determined location, a relative distance and/or a relative direction to other local devices. Determined location information may be communicated to other devices via a network. The wireless communication device may receive locations and/or corresponding location uncertainties from devices located within a limited range. The received information is utilized to determine a more accurate location. The more accurate location is communicated back to the devices within the limited range and/or to other communication devices.

  • Patent number: 8787381
Abstract: Embodiments for processing media over Internet Protocol (IP) packets in a wireless device are provided. Embodiments enable downlink and uplink media over IP flows within the wireless device that reduce the load on the application processor (AP) of the wireless device. In an embodiment, media over IP flows bypass the AP entirely allowing the AP to enter a power saving mode during media over IP sessions. This results in increased battery lifetime and reduced power consumption of the wireless device. In addition, the media over IP session quality is improved by the reduced latency resulting from bypassing the AP.

  • Patent number: 8787849
Abstract: Methods and systems for receiving signals via a multi-port distributed antenna are disclosed and may include selectively enabling one or more low noise amplifiers (LNAs) coupled to the antenna. The selective enabling may be based on a desired gain level applied to a signal received from the antenna. The LNAs may be coupled to ports on the antenna based on an input impedance of the LNAs and an impedance of the ports. Each of the LNAs may be configured for optimum linearity in different gain ranges, which may be proportional to the input impedance of the LNAs. The antenna may be integrated on a chip with the LNAs, or may be located external to the chip. The antenna may include a microstrip antenna. The LNAs may include variable gain and may be enabled utilizing a processor. Linearity on demand may be enabled via the selective enabling of the LNAs.

  • Patent number: 8787282
Abstract: A feedback radio resource in a license-exempt frequency band maps from a data radio resource to at least one frequency sub-band which the data resource excludes. The feedback resource is also spaced in time from the data resource by a predetermined interval. Feedback (ACK/NACK) for data received in the data resource is then sent in the feedback resource. In various embodiments the sub-band is one or more edges of the data resource channel, or of a license-exempt component carrier. The predetermined interval may be a function of how much of the data resource is occupied by data. The data transmitting device delays sending its data by a time offset from the end of a previous transmission on that channel, or if it does not know the end time it delays until the predetermined interval plus the length of the feedback resource have lapsed. Various synchronization aspects are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20140198639
Abstract: A mobile station detects whether there is congestion in a cell by monitoring a first channel fix downlink messages and decoding the messages to see if the decoded messages indicate congestion, where the first channel is a common control channel (CCCH). For the case in which the mobile station determines from the decoded messages that there is no congestion, the mobile station initiates a random access procedure by transmitting a request message uplink on a random access channel (RACH). Else for the case in which the mobile station determines from the decoded messages that there is congestion, the mobile station waits for a waiting time before initiating a random access procedure.

  • Publication number: 20140200008
Abstract: In an Long Term Evolution (LTE) environment, LTE base stations may collect relevant data from subscribing wireless devices, as well as from nearby LTE base stations and WLAN access points. Based on the collected data, as well as data of the base station itself, the base station may make a determination as to whether to institute offloading of some or all of the subscribing UEs. Rather than independently communicating the offload command to each of the UEs, the base station may issue a broadcast notification that may be decoded by all of the UEs for performing offloading. In order to mitigate a surge of offloading, the base station can include surge prevention parameters in the broadcast message to distribute or reduce offloading.
