  • Patent number: 8774327
Abstract: The present invention provides adjusting of a radio frequency (RF) receiver that includes processing that begins by enabling an initial setting of the RF receiver, wherein the initial setting is based on a bandwidth of a channel of a plurality of channels. The processing continues by receiving an RF signal containing a preamble of a frame via one of the plurality of channels. The processing continues by converting the RF signal to a baseband signal based on the initial setting. The processing continues by determining channel type of the one of the plurality of channels based on the baseband signal. The processing continues by determining whether the channel type corresponds to the bandwidth of the initial setting. The processing continues by, when the channel type does not correspond to the bandwidth of the initial setting, adjusting setting of the RF receiver based on the channel type.

  • Patent number: 8776090
Abstract: A device may abstract access to hardware resources in the device to a single operating system (OS) running in the device utilizing an abstraction layer and a software partition. The abstraction layer and the software partition may enable virtualizing the hardware resources during interfacing between the single OS and the hardware resources, such that the actual characteristics and/or number of the hardware resources may be abstracted. The abstraction layer may comprise a hypervisor, which may be optimized to support network abstraction based operations. The software partition may enable managing configuration and/or use of the hardware resources via the abstraction layer. The hardware resources may comprise networking resources. Accordingly, operations of a plurality of virtual drivers within the OS corresponding to each of one or more of the plurality of hardware resources may be supported. Data transfers between the OS and the hardware resources may be performed via the software partition.

  • Patent number: 8776155
Abstract: Embodiments provide solutions to reduce power utilization (either at individual cable modems or in the overall network) in future cable networks. Particularly, embodiments seek to reduce power utilization at individual cable modems and in the overall network, by pre-compensating upstream transmissions according to feedback channel characteristics received from the headend. According to embodiments, pre-compensation is performed using power filtering/amplification and/or bit loading. Pre-compensation can be performed individually per cable modem. Further, pre-compensation can be performed over the entire upstream frequency spectrum and/or over particular sub-hands of the frequency spectrum as appropriate for each cable modem.

  • Patent number: 8773986
Abstract: A system and method for providing upstream adaptive modulation. Burst parameters associated with a range of data interval usage codes (IUCs) are defined. Each of the data IUCs has a different modulation order and forward error correction (FEC). The SNR and codeword error rate for each satellite modem in the network are monitored. The data IUCs are dynamically assigned to different satellite modems within an upstream channel based on SNR and/or codeword error rate to enable each of the satellite modems in the upstream channel to achieve maximum bandwidth efficiency during upstream data transmissions. Bandwidth requests are received from the satellite modems and granted. The grant includes the assigned data IUC. The data bursts received in the upstream channel are each processed using the parameters from the assigned IUC for each of the satellite modems sending data in the upstream channel.

  • Patent number: 8774300
Abstract: Signal processing under attenuated transmission conditions. Within an orthogonal signal space, the number of orthogonal signals that are used to transmit information from a transmitter to a receiver is reduced and the transmitted power of each of the now remaining orthogonal signals is modified; this may involve increasing the power of all of the remaining orthogonal signals equally or alternatively modifying them individually. The same modulation used before the reduction may also be used afterwards; within communication systems having multiple transmitter-receiver paths, this will ensure that the communication system's throughput and efficiency will remain unchanged even when one (or more) transmitter-receiver paths are highly attenuated. In addition, robust mode operation is provided for ranging and registering of transmitter devices when entering the communication system.

  • Patent number: 8774740
Abstract: Aspects of a system for improving efficiency over power control for linear and class AB power amplifiers may include a current source circuit that enables determination of a bias current level for a PA circuit within an IC die based on an amplitude of an input modulation signal. The PA circuit may enable generation of an output signal based on a differential input signal and the input modulation signal to the current source circuit. A generated bias voltage may be applied to a transformer external to the IC die, but internal to an IC package containing the IC die and/or a circuit board containing the IC package. One or more amplifier bias voltage levels may be applied to the PA circuit wherein the amplifier bias voltage levels may be derived from the generated bias voltage level and/or the determined bias current level.

  • Patent number: 8774332
Abstract: Based on tracked amplitude modulation (e.g., which may be hum modulation), compensation for amplitude modulation is applied across all orthogonal signal components of a non-time based orthogonal coded signal. Some examples of such non-time based orthogonal coded signals include an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal, a synchronous code division multiple access (S-CDMA) signal, or a code division multiple access (CDMA) signal, etc. The compensation may be applied to the signal across multiple frames, on a frame by frame basis, or intra-frame (i.e., changing and compensating differently within a frame). This compensation for amplitude modulation may be applied in conjunction with adaptive equalization in which different filter taps are applied to each respective orthogonal signal component of the signal. Also, automatic gain control (AGC) may be performed (e.g., before digital sampling) of a received signal in conjunction with the amplitude modulation compensation.

  • Publication number: 20140184152
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed to control the mutual coupling between wireless power transfer (WPT) enabled devices. Wireless power transfer is best achieved when both the transmitting and receiving device are tuned to substantially the same frequency. Because WPT-enabled devices are coupled to one another during WPT, tuning one WPT-enabled device can cause both devices to converge to a resonance together. Furthermore, a WPT enabled receiving device can be intentionally detuned to avoid coupling excessive power from a WPT-enabled transmitter device. These concepts can be extended to WPT-enabled device pairs that each has WPT transmission and reception qualities. When multiple WPT-enabled devices interact, tuning information can be stored in one or both of the devices to make the configuration procedure for subsequent WPT interactions more efficient. Various systems are presented to control the mutual coupling between WPT-enabled devices to improve the WPT.

  • Publication number: 20140185659
Abstract: A DSL transmitter and receiver are disclosed that are capable of accurately measuring crosstalk in G.vector-compliant DSL lines resulting from a legacy line. During crosstalk measurement, the legacy line can be placed in a showtime mode. Once in showtime mode, a data signal designated for the legacy line is reduced in power spectrum density and/or spectrum to reduce its effects on crosstalk measurements. An O-P-Vector-1 signal is then superposed on the reduced data signal, and the resulting test signal is transmitted over the legacy line while sync signals are transmitted over neighboring G.vector lines. The receiver can then accurately measure the crosstalk on the neighboring lines, and report back to the transceiver for adjustments. A similar configuration can be performed in a diagnostic mode of the legacy line.
