  • Patent number: 6068444
Abstract: A submergible, centrifugal pump utilizes an improved bushing system for absorbing downthrust at each stage of the pump. The centrifugal pump is a multi-stage pump having a plurality of impellers keyed to a rotatable shaft. Diffusers cooperate with the impellers to conduct the pumped fluid upwardly from one impeller to the next. The improved support system comprises simple diffuser bushings that are generally cylindrical in shape, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture. Each diffuser bushing is disposed between a diffuser and the next upwardly sequential impeller to support that impeller with respect to the downthrust created during pumping.

  • Patent number: 6056511
Abstract: A connection module is disclosed for a submergible pumping system of the type including a submergible electric motor and a pump drivingly coupled to the motor. The system may also include additional components such as a fluid separators, an injection pump, and so forth. The connection module includes a body through which a fluid passage is formed. A recess is formed in the body for receiving a cable for transmitting power to the submergible electric motor. The fluid passage transfers fluid within the pumping system, such as by means of shrouds disposed around the system components. The connection module also includes an electrical connector for completing current carrying paths between a supply cable and the motor. The connection module may thus serve as the motor head in which the electrical connections are made, but through which fluid is channeled to system components.

  • Patent number: 6045333
Abstract: A submergible pumping unit for raising viscous fluids from a well is driven by an electronic drive and control system, a first portion of which is located above the well, and a second portion of which is coupled to the submergible pumping unit. The drive and control system includes a power supply circuit located above the well for converting AC power from a source to DC power having current and voltage levels. The DC power is transmitted to the pumping unit via a two-conductor DC bus cable. The pumping unit includes a switching circuit which receives the DC power for driving a submergible motor, such as a permanent magnet brushless motor. The speed of the motor, and of a pump coupled thereto, is proportional to the voltage of the DC power applied to the pumping unit. The pump is preferably a progressive cavity pump, and the drive and control circuitry provides sufficient torque to start the pump from a static condition.

  • Patent number: 6045750
Abstract: Methods of forming a new wear and abrasion overlay formed with the steel surfaces of components for earth boring bits, and the components formed by the methods are disclosed. The overlay comprises a hard material particulate containing a metal carbide and an alloy steel matrix. The volume fraction of the hard material particulate in the overlay is greater than about 75%, the average particle size of the hard material particulate is between about 40 mesh and about 80 mesh, and the thickness of the overlay is less than about 0.050 inches. The process of manufacture includes the steps of fixing a monolayer of hard material particulate to the surface of a flexible mold, filling the mold with materials and powders, and CIP densifying to form a preform. The preform is then forged to near 100% density in a rapid solid state densification powder metallurgy process. The resulting bit component has an integrally formed overlay with superior physical properties.

  • Patent number: 6033567
Abstract: A fluid separation system is provided for separating wellbore fluids into production fluids and non-production fluids. The system includes a separator adapted for transmitting mechanical power between a drive motor and at least one pump. The separator includes one or more separation units, such as hydrocyclone separators. A drive train traversing the separator is interfaced with drive elements, such as a submergible electric motor, and driven elements such as an injection or production pump. Wellbore fluids are channeled through the separator in either a push-through or pull-through manner. Production fluids are then transferred from the separator to the production pump for removal from the well. Non-production fluids are transmitted from the separator either to the injection pump for reinjection into a subterranean discharge zone, or directly into the discharge zone from the separator.

  • Patent number: 6017456
Abstract: A fluid separation system is disclosed for installation within a wellbore that penetrates a production formation and a discharge formation. The system comprises a first pump and a second pump each operatively connected to a means for operation, such as a downhole electric motor, and a fluid separator for separating wellbore fluids from the production formation into a first stream and a lighter second stream. Wellbore fluids are introduced into the first pump, and are then conveyed to an inlet of the fluid separator. The second stream exiting the fluid separator is conveyed to an inlet of the second pump, and from the second pump to the earth's surface. Devices are included, such as wellbore packers, to isolate the discharge formation from the production formation, so that the second stream exiting the fluid separator directly enters the discharge formation.

  • Patent number: 6015012
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for sealing a junction between a central and lateral wellbore is provided. In a broad aspect, the method of the present invention includes installing a polymerizable sealing sleeve within a first casing in a central wellbore at a junction between the first casing and a second casing in a lateral wellbore. After the sealing sleeve has been installed and allowed to cure, a milling tool is used to mill a window through a sidewall of the sealing sleeve and flush with the inner diameter of the second casing. The sealing sleeve may be used alone to establish a primary seal, or in combination with cement or other sealing substance, as used heretofore in prior art sealing methods, as a back-up seal. The sealing sleeve of the present invention may be provided with at least one orienting means to enable the second casing to be located and to direct a well tool thereinto.
