  • Publication number: 20120174505
Abstract: A shingle having butt and tab portions is provided, wherein the tab portions are exposed when applied to a roof, and wherein active photovoltaic element(s) appear on portions only of the tab portions of the shingles, wherein adjacent zones of the tab portions of the shingles to which the photovoltaic element(s) are applied are free of active photovoltaic elements. The shingles are applied to a roof or a major portion of a roof, laid up in courses so that exposed tab portions of next-overlying courses cover unexposed butt portions of next-underlying courses, leaving photovoltaic elements exposed. In an array of shingles on a roof, the photovoltaic elements are distributed substantially uniformally. The surface ornamentation of the exposed surfaces of the photovoltaic elements may be either complementary to the exposed surfaces of the shingles not having photovoltaic elements thereon, or may blend with such zones not having photovoltaic elements thereon.

  • Patent number: 8216407
Abstract: A hip, ridge or rake shingle is provided, in which a pair of substantially rigid panel portions are connected by a hinge portion, and wherein the shingle is pre-assembled, but can conform to a variety of different angles to accommodate different angular relationships between surfaces of a hip, ridge or rake of a roof. The substantially rigid panel portions are connected by a hinge and may or may not have a reinforcement member, and all of the panels, hinges and reinforcement members are of synthetic thermoplastic polymeric construction and are welded together by ultrasonic or vibratory welding techniques.

  • Patent number: 8215083
Abstract: A previously formed unitary building exterior envelope product is provided, comprising: a mineral fiber insulation board including a binder having a hydrophobic agent and is resistant to liquid water-penetration and has first and second major surfaces, an exterior facing material, which resists air infiltration and liquid water penetration, laminated to the first major surface, the exterior facing material being permeable to water vapor, and a continuous interior facing laminated to the second major surface, so that the second major surface is resistant to liquid water-penetration and is permeable to water vapor. The section of product is mounted to an exterior side of a plurality of framing members of an exterior wall of a building, so that the interior facing faces the framing members. An exterior layer is mounted to the framing members using a connection device that passes through the section of product, with the facing material facing the exterior layer.

  • Publication number: 20120167515
Abstract: A ceiling suspension system has support members that are interconnected to support ceiling panels. The ceiling suspension system is suspended from a building. Each of the support members has a lower surface that is patterned and different in textural appearance than other portions of the support members to define patterned lower surfaces. For example, the patterned lower surfaces may have non-smooth textures that are uniform and symmetrical, or non-uniform and irregular. The patterned lower surfaces may have three-dimensional features such as lines, slots, dimples, protrusions, peaks and valleys and/or cross-hatching, which may be roll-formed on capping on the support members.

  • Publication number: 20120161433
Abstract: A polymeric riser cap member includes a central tubular section defining a generally cylindrical bore for receiving a sprinkler riser, the central tubular section having open top and bottom ends, and an annular skirt coaxial with the central tubular section and having an inner diameter larger than an inner diameter of the central tubular section. The annular skirt has an inner surface having internal threads threadably connectable with the externally threaded surface of a tubular riser adapter member of a tubular coupler. The bottom end of the central tubular section has an annular projection disposed opposite and spaced from a portion of the annular skirt. The riser cap member includes an annular recess adapted to receive a seal located in a wall extending laterally between the annular skirt and the annular projection.

  • Patent number: 8206629
Abstract: A co-extrusion process enhances the durability of the ultimate product over previous systems which use relatively fragile paint coatings to limit heat absorption. By providing near-IR transmissive and reflective pigments within the co-extruded polymers, a highly durable finished product is obtained. The co-extruded layers are disclosed for use in fence and deck applications, but will also find application in a wide variety of building product applications, both exterior and interior.

  • Publication number: 20120145306
Abstract: A process of forming a member for a structure can include depositing a solar control layer over a first substrate, wherein depositing is performed using a plasma-assisted technique. The process can also include coupling the solar control layer and the first substrate to a second substrate. The process can further include removing the first substrate from the solar control layer while at least a portion of the solar control layer remains coupled to the second substrate. In an embodiment, second substrate can include a substrate for a structural member. Due to the composition or size of the substrate, the process described herein can be used to deposit a solar control layer that is initially deposited on a different substrate and is subsequently transferred to the substrate of the structural member.

  • Publication number: 20120147458
Abstract: A member for a structure can include a substrate having a visible outer surface. The member can also include a solar control layer disposed between the substrate and an outdoor environment. In an embodiment, as seen along an outer surface of the member, the solar control layer does not significantly alter the appearance of the member as compared to the member in an absence of the solar control layer. Such appearance can include a particular color, wood grain, masonry surface, another suitable appearance characteristic, or any combination thereof. In another embodiment, a member for a structure can include a substrate, an intermediate layer, and a solar control layer, wherein the intermediate layer comprises a primary material that is susceptible to significant degradation when exposed during a plasma deposition.
