  • Patent number: 4267287
Abstract: The invention relates to polymers and copolymers of pivaloyloxyalkyl methacrylates which contain structural units of the general formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is (CH.sub.2).sub.n.sbsb.1 --O (n.sub.1 =2 to 10) or (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --O).sub.n.sbsb.2 (n.sub.2 =1 to 4) and to the method of their preparation and modification. The polymerization and copolymerization can be initiated by free-radical initiators of the peroxy type or by anionic initiators, e.g., alkali metal alkoxides or butyllithium, and carried out in a solution, bulk or suspension process in the presence of a crosslinking agent or without it. Anionic polymerization may result in stereoregular polymers or may be used for preparation of block copolymers by the "living" polymer technique. The polymers and copolymers can be modified by the partial or total conversion of the pivaloyloxyalkyl methacrylate units into hydroxyalkyl methacrylate units by selective hydrolysis, alcoholysis or other reaction.

  • Patent number: 4263723
Abstract: The invention concerns the design arrangement of the cap for the inlet of fluid into the fluidization bed which is heated or cooled by the methods described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 3,897,546 and 3,908,284. The cap is formed by an inlet pipe closed at its upper end on which are formed two or more mutually separated chambers, while in this pipe a number of holes is drilled for the inlet of fluid into the chambers. Into these chambers a number of holes are drilled for the outlet of fluid from these chambers into the fluidized-bed. The vertical distance of the inlet holes from two neighboring chambers of the cap either equals or is smaller than one and one-half times the height of the heat exchanger situated in the particular fluidization bed formed between these two neighboring chambers of the same cap. The caps were used for the inlet of the combustion air into a fluidized-bed combustor, while the pressure drop of the lower part of the cap did not exceed 10% of the pressure drop of the upper part of the caps.

  • Patent number: 4228056
Abstract: Substantially water-insoluble, water-swellable crosslinked hydrogels are prepared by polymerizing monomeric material consisting predominantly of acrylonitrile in aqueous salt solution containing zinc chloride as the main component, in absence of added crosslinking agents. The concentration of acrylonitrile is in the range of about 20 to about 40% by weight, related to the weight of the polymerization batch as a whole 100%. The process is carried out by partially hydrolyzing the primary gel thus obtained which consists of polyacrylonitrile plasticized with the aqueous salt solution, whereafter the zinc ions are removed from the gel by treating it with a dilute aqueous solution of at least one electrolyte forming an insoluble precipitate therewith. The partial hydrolysis may be carried out either by increasing the acidity of the solution or temperature or both.
