  • Patent number: 6355857
Abstract: A waste treatment process includes containing a reactant metal alloy (210) in a reactant alloy container (202) substantially isolated from oxygen gas. The reactant metal alloy includes at least one chemically active alkaline metal and at least one radiation absorbing metal. After heating the reactant alloy (210) in the reactant alloy container (202) to a desired operating temperature, a waste material including radioactive isotopes to be alloyed is introduced into the molten alloy, preferably below the surface of the alloy. Non-radioactive compounds in the waste material react with metals in the reactant alloy (210) to produce useful halogen salts and other materials. The metal radioactive isotopes in the waste material are alloyed with the alkaline metal and radiation absorbing metals to create a storage product for long term storage.

  • Patent number: 6346221
Abstract: A waste tire processing apparatus (10) reacts waste tires (26) with a molten reactant metal (19) to recover primarily carbon and stainless steel. The apparatus (10) includes a tire positioning arrangement (20) for positioning the waste tires (26) in the molten reactant metal (19) for a reaction period. After the reaction period, the tire positioning arrangement (20) removes from the molten metal non-reacted solids remaining after the reaction. The non-reacted solids comprise primarily stainless-steel included in the waste tires. As the waste tires (26) are reacted in the molten reactant metal (19), a gas recovery arrangement (14) collects process gases released from the molten metal. The gas recovery arrangement (14) recovers primarily carbon, metal salts, hydrogen, and nitrogen.

  • Patent number: 6270735
Abstract: An apparatus removes water and organic compounds from waste streams such as contaminated soils and refinery tailings by a combination of thermal stripping and molecular decomposition. The apparatus includes at least one unit having a pipe which is preferably heated by induction heating and also having a transport arrangement. The transport arrangement includes a suitable motor and operates to move the waste stream material through the pipe and mix the material to provide uniform heat transfer from the heated pipe. The transport arrangement preferably includes an adjustment mechanism which allows adjustment of the rate at which material moves through the pipe for a given motor speed. The adjustment mechanism also adjusts the mixing provided by the transport arrangement. Several of the treatment units according to the invention may be connected in series to form a multistage device.

  • Patent number: 6227126
Abstract: An elongated reaction chamber (11) has an inlet end (23), an outlet end (25), and a gas containment boundary (12) extending along its length. Waste material to be processed is injected into the reaction chamber (11) at the inlet end (23) and reaction products are removed from the reaction chamber out the outlet end (25). The reaction chamber (11) is mounted within a supply chamber (16) containing a molten reactant metal (15). The level of the molten reactant metal (15) in the supply chamber (16) resides above the level of the upper gas containment boundary (12). A circulating arrangement including a circulating paddle (17) circulates molten reactant metal (15) into the inlet end (23) of the reaction chamber (11) and through the reaction chamber to its outlet end (25). A mixing arrangement which may include fins (44) associated with the reaction chamber (11) mixes both gases and molten reactant metal in the reaction chamber to enhance exposure of unreacted gases to the molten metal.

  • Patent number: 6195382
Abstract: A molten metal reactor (10) includes a reactor vessel having a heating section (11) formed from a dielectric material. The reactor vessel also includes a reaction section (12) connected to heating section (11). An induction heating coil (18) is associated with the reactor vessel heating section (11) and produces an electromagnetic field within a field area (19). A portion of the field extends through the heating section (11) for inductively heating a reactant metal (14) contained in the heating section, while a dielectric spacing material (25) positioned around induction heating coil (18) isolates electrically conductive materials from the induction heating field (19). A circulating arrangement (20) circulates molten reactant metal between the heating section (11) and reaction section (12) to react waste material introduced into the reactor in the reaction section, outside of the induction heating field (19).

  • Patent number: 6069290
Abstract: A waste treatment process includes charging a reactor container (12) with a reactant alkaline metal alloy (10) and isolating the reactant alloy from oxygen gas. After heating the reactant alloy (10) in the reactor container (2) to a minimum of 770 degrees Celsius, a waste material is introduced into the molten alloy, preferably below the surface of the alloy. The waste material is pyrolized in the reactant alloy (10) to produce useful chlorine salts and other materials. The reactant alloy (10) includes magnesium and/or lithium, aluminum, zinc, calcium, and copper.

  • Patent number: 6037517
Abstract: A reaction chamber (20) is charged with a reactant metal (18) which is heated to a molten state by a suitable heating arrangement (21). A field generating arrangement (17) generates a unidirectional electromagnetic field through the molten reactant metal (18) and through at least one target area preferably within the molten reactant metal. The electromagnetic field directs beta particles toward the first target area. A radiation absorbing module (15, 16) is positioned in the first target area and includes at least one radiation absorbing material (75, 76). The radiation absorbing material (75, 76) in the modules (15, 16) absorb the beta radiation which has been directed to the target area by the electromagnetic field.
