Patent number: 5165287Abstract: A method of determining fracture mode transition behavior (FMTB) of solid materials by using stress field modified miniature specimens. The method is an improvement in the method of determining mechanical behavior information from specimens only so large as to have at least a volume or smallest dimension sufficient to satisfy continuum behavior in all directions. FMTB of the material is determined from the measurements taken during the loading of the specimen resulting in the formation of cracks and/or the further propagation of cracks in the miniature specimen and/or fracture. The specimens are provided with grooves that induce additional stress field modifying stress components in the specimens during the test. These additional stress components result in a desired stress state in the specimens which could not be achieved otherwise. The methods are useful in determining FMTB for the material, when the specimen thickness is smaller than previously thought necessary for valid FMTB determinations.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1990Date of Patent: November 24, 1992Assignee: Battelle Columbus DivisionInventor: Michael P. Patent number: 4794369Abstract: An electricity metering transducer is disclosed which samples voltages and currents at an innerconnection terminal of an electrical energy distribution system, converts those samples to digital form and computes selected electricity metering quantities. In a multiphase system current and voltage signals are multiplexed to a pair of codecs, one for current signals and one for voltage signals. The period of the signals being sampled is detected and used to generate a substantially nonsynchronous sampling signal so that a sample migration system is created which provides a large number of samples of a composite wave form. The steps of a digitally generated stepwise approximation of a sawtooth waveform are summed with the sequential analog samples and then removed from the digital value of each sample by software operation in order to increase the resolution of the digital to analog conversion.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 1984Date of Patent: December 27, 1988Assignee: Scientific Columbus, Inc.Inventor: James E. Patent number: 4694757Abstract: A refuse fuel burning boiler system incorporating a unique tuyere construction wherein the tuyere plates associated with the conveyor-like stoker grate are hingedly mounted to permit the passage of any hard deposits of metal or glass contaminates which form upon the grate during incineration of the refuse fuel. The tuyere plates and support structure are designed for relatively easy retrofit into an existing conventionally designed refuse burning boiler or be incorporated into a new boiler construction. Vertical pivoting of the tuyere plates is limited by hold-down members installed between adjacent plates. These members further function to fix the lateral position of each plate and form the top of an enclosure over the recess in the support wall in which the plates are pivotally mounted.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1986Date of Patent: September 22, 1987Assignee: The City of Columbus, OhioInventors: Richard A. Patent number: 4635903Abstract: There is disclosed a pendant control arrangement for overhead electric hoists featuring a helically wound elastically memorized insulative cord enclosing a plurality of electrical conductors for attachments at their opposite ends to terminals in the hoist motor and in the pendant control switches. This coiled cord encloses a straight line strain relief cable or the like which is of a length equal to the anticipated length required to support the pendant switch control panel at proper elevation below the electric hoist, and simply mechanically connects at its opposite ends to said motor and said control panel. Thus, changes in the distance required between the hoist motor and the control panel are more readily accommodated by reason of the mechanical connections of the relief cable, while leaving the electrical connections of the control cord conductors undisturbed.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 1985Date of Patent: January 13, 1987Assignee: Columbus McKinnon CorporationInventors: Robert H. Broyden, R. Paul Benton, Allen E. Eldridge

Patent number: 4636962Abstract: Load position limits and incremental lowering of a load are controlled by a microprocessor forming an interface between an operator's control station and the hoist. Other hoist status conditions such as underspeed and overspeed of the hoist motor are detected by the microprocessor based upon hoist speed during the position limit setting cycle. Still other hoist status data such a motor overheating, number of power-up cycles, number of under and overspeed shut-downs, number of power failures, etc. are input to the microprocessor and all such data as up-dated are entered into a non-volatile memory which, when extracted, permits maintenance scheduling.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1983Date of Patent: January 13, 1987Assignee: Columbus McKinnon CorporationInventors: Robert H.
