Abstract: Apparatus for continuous shear wave logging of a borehole consisting of a sonde instrument having retractable, expandable coupling arms for rigidly engaging the borehole wall to exert repetitive torqueing action while continuously moving uphole. The sonde includes spaced detector coupling arms in continual contact with the borehole wall and polarized for detection of the repetitive propagated shear waves.
Abstract: This invention relates to secondary or tertiary recovery processes for the recovery of oil from subterranean oil-bearing reservoirs. More particularly, this invention relates to an improved method for the recovery of petroleum from underground reservoirs, which petroleum contains sulfonate surfactants and water and for a method of removing said sulfonate surfactants and water from petroleum produced from said recovery processes.
Abstract: A vortex chamber is disclosed which has a circular elliptical or volute perimeter and end wall. High pressure fluid enters tangentially at the perimeter. Part of this high pressure fluid exits at an axial outlet, forming a vortex. The balance of the high pressure fluid exits at a second tangential outlet at the perimeter. Dry solids are fed into a hopper which is connected to a second axial inlet. The axial inlet should be smaller than the axial outlet, and the two may be concentric. Once the solids enter the vortex chamber, some of them move to the perimeter due to centrifugal force. Once at the perimeter, the solids exit at the tangential outlet.
Abstract: A multicurvature reinforcing body comprising a pair of abutting bowl shaped members is fitted within a tubular chord member in the area of a complex joint. Cylindrical surfaces of contact of the multicurvature reinforcing body are positioned so that the longitudinal axis of an intersecting bracing member attached to the chord member passes through both of the surfaces of contact. The use of a multicurvature rinforcing body constitutes an improvement over the commonly used stiffening rings in that direct translation of tensional and compression forces acting along a bracing member which intersects at an angle other than perpendicular to the chord member to a large surface of contact within the chord member is effected.
Abstract: A sump for the deposit and removal of particulate material mixed with a fluid, comprises a first and second reservoir formed in the surface of the earth. The first and second reservoirs each have a top at the surface of the earth and extend from the surface to a predetermined depth in the earth to form a bottom. The reservoirs have a common wall portion between them from the surface of the earth to a location intermediate the surface and the predetermined depth where the common wall terminates forming an opening between the first and second reservoirs. Particulate material is deposited in one of the reservoirs so that said material is free to fill the reservoir and move through the opening to the second reservoir. Pumping apparatus is mounted in the remaining reservoir at a depth between the terminus of the common wall and the bottom.
Abstract: Apparatus for not only removing fluids from a slurry system but also for injecting fluid into the slurry system so that the concentration can be positively maintained. The apparatus provides for a uniform dilution of slurry so that the fluids will not segregate the slurry causing portions to have low concentration when fluids are added or portions which have high concentration when fluids are removed.
Abstract: A slide valve for use in a high temperature gas line is described. The valve is constructed to allow field assembly and disassembly for ease of service, and has insulating means and gas purge means for maintaining the exterior of the valve housing at a low temperature. The valve includes a slide plate which can be provided with a flow opening in either a first location such that the slide plate is in tension when the valve is closed while hot or in a second location such that the slide plate is in tension when the valve is opened while hot.

Abstract: Apparatus for shear wave logging of formations adjacent a borehole wherein a tubular apparatus is specifically constructed for sympathetic movement with the borehole in response to low frequency horizontal shear waves. The apparatus consists of tubular frame structure with end members including housings for rigid seating of orthogonal pairs of horizontal wave detectors. Outer sleeve structure may be utilized for buoyancy adjustment.

Abstract: An apparatus for injecting a slurry containing solids and entrapped air in a fluid carrier into a tank filled with fluid by injecting the slurry into a chamber in a manner to form a vortex so that the solids and fluids are centrifugally forced to the outside of the chamber and the air is centripetally forced to the center axis of the chamber and exhaust out the top. The liquid and solids remaining in the slurry are then transferred to a second location by gravity where the rotation is reduced and the slurry is then dropped out an opening into the fluid filled tank.
Abstract: Apparatus for controlling temperature in accordance with a source temperature that includes a clock pulse generating circuit that triggers each of first and second mono-stable multivibrators which provide opposite phase pulse outputs having durations controlled by the R-C time of thermistor sensing components. A retriggerable monostable multivibrator is then controlled in response to pulse duration difference to provide toggle energization of heating and cooling sources.
Abstract: An improved method for the production of poly (vinyl acetals) using no added catalyst comprises mixing poly (vinyl alcohol) and an excess amount of aldehyde to produce poly (vinyl acetals), wherein the reaction is driven by removal of water in the form of an aldehyde-water azeotrope.
Abstract: An automated sample analyzer for induction furnace analysis includes an induction furnace having an induction coil housing with an induction coil therein. The coil housing has a lower opening through which a crucible with a sample can be moved to allow the sample to be analyzed by burning. An elevator is provided for raising and lowering a crucible to and from the induction coil through the lower opening and includes a cover for covering the lower opening. A rotatable and radially movable tray has crucible openings for holding a series of crucibles. The tray openings also radially receive the elevator allowing the tray to move out of the way of the cover as it moves with the elevator while the elevator holds a crucible. A drive is provided for moving the tray rotationally and radially in a series of steps such that the crucible receptacle openings are sequentially moved to and from the elevator for automated loading and unloading of the crucibles on the elevator.
Abstract: A source of linearly polarized light having a wavelength range of about 550 to 1100 nanometers provides light into one end of an optical fiber. A nonlinear crystal of the type that mixes the frequency of light passing therethrough is positioned adjacent the other end of the fiber. The fiber transmits light from the source to the crystal which increases its frequency up to 100%, dependent upon crystal selection providing light in the 250-550 nanometer wavelength range. Adjusting the radial orientation of the crystal with respect to the fiber optimizes conversion of light to the 250-550 nanometer range. Such light is shined into organic dye which emits fluorescent light in the range of about 400 to 1000 nanometers dependent upon the type of dye selected.
Abstract: The invention provides a vertical velocity signal and an integration signal, respectively, of two detected ambient conditions. The signals are summed, in a selectable ratio, and compared with a predetermined altitude set point. When there is a difference between the summed outputs and the altitude set point, an altitude control signal is provided to control a vertical propulsion system of an object whose altitude is to be maintained above a terrain.
Abstract: A method for producing fuel comprised of gasoline rich in methanol and methyl ethers derived from coal, which process comprises gasifying the coal to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen, steam shifting the gasification product to produce additional hydrogen, cleaning up the shifted product, catalytically converting the cleaned shifted gas to a mixture of alcohols, separating a methanol fraction from the mixture of alcohols, dehydrating the remaining alcohols to olefins, etherifying the olefin mixture with a portion of the removed methanol fraction, and blending into gasoline the resulting ether mixture and a second portion of the removed methanol fraction.
Abstract: A level control apparatus is disclosed for controlling a liquid level between a maximum and a minimum. An elastic circuit generates a reference pulse which receives the pulse and triggers the generation of first and second reference pulses. The first reference pulse has a width which corresponds to the function of the maximum level of liquid and the second reference pulse has a width which corresponds to the function of the minimum of liquid. A capacitance probe supplies an output to a level sensing means which generates an output control pulse which varies in time with respect to the liquid level.
Abstract: A process for preparing aromatic-moiety-containing polymers having modified physical properties is disclosed. Briefly, the process comprises reacting in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst: (a) a suitable aromatic-moiety containing polymer resin and (b) a homopolymer of .omega.-halo-.alpha.-olefins, or co- or terpolymer of .omega.-halo-.alpha.-olefins with other .alpha.-olefins and/or ethylene.
Abstract: Circuitry for qualifying a series of randomly occurring alarm events to avoid erroneous indications. Alarm events occurring in a surveillance system or the like are counted over a selected time interval, and final alarm output is effected only if a selected 1+n number of events has been counted within the interval. Both the repetitive time intervals and the event number are variable in accordance with the exigencies of the alarm application.
