Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the detection and/or quantification of Streptococcus pneumoniae, a Gram-positive bacteria that is an important human pathogen, in an isolated biological sample, through magneto-amperometric biosensors, comprising detecting fragments of lytA gene of the microorganism, amplified through PCR, preferably asymmetric PCR or direct asymmetric PCR, by hybridization thereof to a specific probe fully complementary to a region of the amplified fragment. Furthermore, the present invention also relates to the use of primers SEQ ID NO: 3 and 4 together with probes SEQ ID NO: 1 and/or SEQ ID NO: 2 to perform the detection. The biosensor developed to detect S. pneumoniae can be applied to different types of clinical samples from patients infected with this bacterium or other related bacteria. Preferably the clinical sample is an isolated biological fluid such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva or urine.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a compound material consisting of a natural zeolite having calcium as an exchangeable cation, in which hydroxyapatite on a nanometric scale is grown in a controlled manner on the surface thereof; to the method by which said compound material is obtained; and to the use thereof for removing fluoride from water in order to make same drinkable. As a result of the aforementioned special characteristics of hydroxyapatite crystals, said material has a very high intrinsic capacity (based on the weight of hydroxyapatite) for removing fluoride. This capacity, combined with the low cost and ease of access to the materials used for preparing same, and with the straightforward nature of the method, means that said material is the perfect candidate for removing fluoride from water having high levels of this contaminant.

Abstract: The subject of the present disclosure is a multilayer nanoparticular, mesoporous structure that has properties of a Bragg reflector or of a unidimensional photonic crystal in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared ranges close to the electromagnetic spectrum. The unidimensional photonic crystal is formed by laminae with different indices of refraction and of a controlled size, made up of nanoparticles, which can be deposited on different types of substrates using a simple and reliable method. The periodic alternating of laminae with different indices of refraction gives rise to a high reflection factor which can easily be observed with the naked eye and can be measured with a spectrophotometer. In contrast to other, dense, reflective structures, the mesoporous structure of this reflector allows the passage of liquids.
