  • Patent number: 5596119
Abstract: A method for controlling the direct process to vary the concentrations of trialkylhalosilanes and alkyltrihalosilanes in the product. The method comprises contacting an alkyl chloride with silicon metalloid in the presence of a catalytic amount of a catalyst comprising 0.5 to 10 weight percent copper, 5 to 200 ppm tin, 25 to 2,500 ppm phosphorous, and greater than zero to less than 50 ppm zinc, where the concentration of each of the catalyst components is based on the weight of the silicon, at a temperature within a range of about 250.degree. C. to 400.degree. C. The present inventors have found that by controlling the zinc concentration the concentrations of trialkylhalosilanes and alkyltrihalosilanes in the product can be varied.

  • Patent number: 5594822
Abstract: Overclad fiber optic couplers are made by inserting the uncoated portions of a plurality of optical fibers into the bore of a glass tube, collapsing the tube midregion onto the fibers and stretching the central portion of the tube midregion. The present method utilizes a glass tube the bore of which includes a circular portion and a recess. A plurality of optical fibers are sequentially inserted into the tube by threading the coated end into the circular bore portion until the uncoated portion of fiber is centered in the tube. The uncoated portion of fiber is then transferred laterally into the bore recess. After all fibers have been threaded into the circular bore portion and transferred to the recess, a filler fiber is inserted into the circular bore portion. The resultant coupler exhibits low excess loss.

  • Patent number: 5591459
Abstract: Apparatus is provided for extending the life of spinners by means of reinforcement which includes a plurality of arms secured to the bottom wall of a spinner either individually or via an annular plate from which the arms extend. The reinforcement applies a radially inward force on a flange extending from the top or center of an outer sidewall of the spinner. The arms exert the radial force as the result of offset cams, due to a prestressed condition which is released after the reinforcement is installed in a spinner or otherwise. If the spinner includes both a center flange and an upper flange, the reinforcement may be installed to engage the center flange with gussets interconnecting the center flange and the upper flange at least at locations corresponding to the reinforcement to thereby provide reinforcement for both flanges.
