Abstract: A cap assembly for receiving a stopper and for application to the threaded neck of a bottle. The cap assembly includes a cap and a thrust washer. The cap has an end wall which has a central aperture and a circular side wall which has internal threads. The thrust washer has a base wall with a central aperture and a side wall which has a ridge at its outer end. The thrust washer lies within the side wall of the cap so that the base wall engages the end wall and the side wall extends through the aperture in the end wall and the ridge engages the outer surface of the end wall to retain tile thrust washer on the cap. Tile side wall of the thrust washer is resiliently yieldable to enable the ridge to disengage from the end wall to release the thrust washer from the cap.

Abstract: A engine exhaust system is disclosed for reducing the amount of hydrocarbons emitted during engine start-up (cold-start), before the catalytic converter has attained its effective operating temperature. The system includes a flow control device, in particular a bi-metallic flap, occupying a first position at the first temperature to direct substantially all of the engine exhaust through a molecular sieve structure to adsorb the hydrocarbons, and a second position at the second temperature, to direct the engine exhaust stream directly from the light-off catalyst to the burnoff catalyst, bypassing the molecular sieve structure.

Abstract: A fiber manufacturing apparatus including a spinner, fixed to one end of a rotatable shaft and equipment for supplying at least one molten thermoplastic material to the spinner is provided. The spinner includes a radial wall and an outer peripheral wall. The radial wall extends radially out from the shaft and has an outer periphery. The peripheral wall is disposed around the outer periphery of the radial wall and has a plurality of orifices for centrifuging fibers from at least one molten thermoplastic material. The spinner is operatively adapted to be radially balanced during the centrifuging operation. By being so balanced, the spinner is less likely to exhibit temperature induced deformation that introduces undesirable process variables during the fiber manufacturing process.

Abstract: A web-like nanoparticle silica is produced by laser vaporization of silicon metal in a helium/oxygen atmosphere in a diffusion cloud chamber where it aggregates into novel web-like microstructures. The aggregates are porous and have a surface area greater than 300 m.sup.2 /g. Bright blue photoluminescence from the web-like nanoparticle silica is observed upon irradiation with ultraviolet light.
