    Abstract: A process for manufacturing an alkenyl aromatic compound which is an industrially valuable compound as a raw material for the manufacture of naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, a highly useful raw material of polymers. The process comprises reacting an alkylbenzene and 1,3-butadiene in the presence of (a) metallic sodium, (b) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of salts of potassium, salts of rubidium, and salts of an alkaline earth metal, and (c) an aromatic compound capable of producing a charge-transfer complex together with metallic sodium. High purity alkenyl aromatic compound can be manufactured at a high yield using a simple procedure.

The composition has excellent compatibility, heat resistance, mechanical characteristics, platability, moldability, and electric characteristics. It is an ideal material for use as an electrical part material due to its low dielectric constant and low dielectric dissipation factor at high frequency.

    Abstract: A process for the production of an over based alkaline earth metal phenate (sulfurized, unsulfurized or a mixture thereof), in which the process comprises the steps of: effecting reactions among phenols, dihydric alcohols and an alkaline earth metal reagent (alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide or a mixture thereof), or among these compounds further mixed with sulfur and/or water; removing an excess of the dihydric alcohols and at least an excess of water by distillation; and subsequently treating resulting distillation residue with carbon dioxide, wherein the improvement resides in that the carbon dioxide treatment is carried out in the presence of water in an amount of from 0.01 to 1.0 mol per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent. Preferably, the carbon dioxide treatment is carried out in the presence of 0.1 to 0.7 mol sulfur and 0.1 to 1.0 mol water per 1 mol of the alkaline earth metal reagent.

    Abstract: A catalyst composition for the hydrotreatment of hydrocarbon oils is disclosed. The composition comprises at least one metal compound having hydrogenating activity belonging to a Group VIB or Group VIII carried on a carrier comprising 2-35% by weight of zeolite and 98-65% by weight of alumina or an alumina-containing substance, wherein, (A) said alumina or alumina-containing substance (1) has a mean pore diameter of 60-125 angstrom and (2) contains the pore volume of which the diameter falls within .+-.10 angstrom of the mean pore diameter of 70-98% of the total pore volume, (B) said zeolite (3) has a mean particle size of 6 .mu.m or smaller and (4) contains particles of which the diameter is 6 .mu.m or smaller of 70-98% of all zeolite particles. It has both high hydrodesulfurization and high cracking capabilities at the same time, and can selectively crack the heavy fractions which have once been hydrotreated, yielding lighter fractions.
