    Abstract: A process for producing C10-C26 monobranched fatty acids or alkyl esters thereof which includes isomerizing unsaturated C10-C26 fatty acids or alkyl esters thereof in the presence of a catalyst which comprises both a zeolite and a Lewis base. The zeolite can be reused after simple separation from the reaction products without having to regenerate. The process is particularly suitable for producing highly monobranched fatty acids or alkyl esters thereof.

    Abstract: Polyamide compositions useful for personal care are disclosed, including film-forming concentrates and emulsions. Ethanol-based concentrates comprise a hydrophobic polyamide, which comprises a reaction product of either (a) a dimerized fatty acid, at least one C2-C4 carboxylic acid, and a polyamine component comprising ethylenediamine and 1 to 30 eq. % of one or more di- or triamines; or (b) a dimerized fatty acid, at least 50 wt. % of a C16-C22 unsaturated carboxylic acid, and at least one C2-C6 diamine. Personal care applications for the concentrates, including continuous sunscreens, fragrant body sprays or splashes, anti-acne medications, are included. Water-in-oil emulsions comprising the hydrophobic polyamides are storage-stable and provide water-resistant SPF for products such as sunscreens and body lotions.

    Abstract: Polyglycerol carboxylic acid esters are made by reaction of a, typically C2 to C30, particularly C6 to C22, carboxylic acid with glycerol carbonate, particularly with base catalyst, and desirably at temperatures from 170° C. to 250° C. Other carbonates e.g. cyclic diol carbonates such as ethylene or propylene carbonates, may be used in combination with the glycerol carbonate to make novel mixed polymeric esters. The molar ratio of carboxylic acid group to glycerol carbonate is typically from 2 to 30, but can be up to 100. The base catalyst is desirably alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or alkoxide. The reaction is desirably carried out in an inert atmosphere, and reducing agent such as phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid or borohydride and/or activated carbon, may be included to improve product color.

    Abstract: Hard surfaces can be treated to improve soil resistance, particularly resistance to oily soils, by applying a composition of a quaternised, polyamine, polypropoxylate, polyethoxylate. The polyamine can be a polyethyleneimme, desirably having a molecular weight of from 10 to 50 kDa. The average length of the polypropylenoxy chains is desirably from 10 to 100 and the polyethylenoxy chains from 5 to 50 (each per NH group in the polyamine), particularly at a molar ratio of PO:EO of about 3:1. The degree of quaternization of the nitrogen atoms in the polyamine is desirably from 70 to 100%. The polymer will usually be used in solution in water or an aqueous formulation, which may include detergent and other detergent formulation components.

    Abstract: An engine lubricant, especially an SAE OW engine lubricant is described. The engine lubricant has at least 15 wt % of at least one monoester and not more than 15 wt % of additives, wherein said at least one monoester, or mixture of said monoesters if more than one is present, has a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of not more than 3.3, a viscosity index of at least 130 and a Noack evaporation loss of not more than 15 wt %. The monoester is preferably the reaction product of a monohydric alcohol and a monocarboxylic acid wherein said monohydric alcohol is at least one saturated branched-chain aliphatic monohydric alcohol having between 16 and 36, carbon atoms and wherein said monocarboxylic acid is at least one saturated straight-chain aliphatic monocarboxylic acid having between 5 and 10, preferably 5 and 7, carbon atoms. In preferred lubricants, the monoester, or mixtures of monoesters, have a pour point of not more than ?30° C. and a non-polarity index of at least 80.

    Abstract: Gear oil formulations comprising a gear oil and a film forming agent are disclosed. The film forming agent comprises a polymeric ester which is the reaction product of at least one polyfunctional alcohol, a dimer fatty acid, an optional aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having 5 to 18 carbon atoms and one or more ingredients to reduce the acid value of the polymeric ester to below 5 mgKOH/g with the resultant polymeric ester having a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. ranging from 400 to 5000 mm2/s and a weight average molecular weight ranging from 5000 to 20000. When used as an automotive gear oil formulation the specifications for API GL-4 gear oils are at least satisfied. Use of the gear oil formulation in manual transmissions, transfer cases and differentials and use of the gear oil formulation in an industrial gear suitable for lubricating spur, helical, bevel, worm and hypoid gears are disclosed. Methods of lubrication are also disclosed.

The dispersant has good dispersancy properties, when used as a sole dispersant or in combination with other dispersants. It provides enhanced seal resistance and has good oxidative stability in automotive applications as compared to current commercial products.

A range of surfactant properties can be obtained by varying the molecules within these ranges. Especially where R2 is derived from a higher polyol e.g. sorbitol, R3 is C2 to C6, and the fatty terminal group is C8 to C14, the products can be highly water soluble and effective oil in water emulsifiers.
