  • Publication number: 20120312815
Abstract: A container end (20) having a dispensing aperture (50) with a closed position, in which the dispensing aperture is sealed, and an open position, in which product may be dispensed through the aperture (50). The end (20) includes a flexible film (70), which has at least one tongue (75) anchored to the end (20) outside the periphery of the aperture (50) and having a free end, which is visible in the dispensing aperture once the aperture is opened. The free end of the tongue (75) is concealed when the aperture (50) is closed, but becomes visible to a user once the aperture (50) is opened. Thus the film tongue (75) provides opportunities for promotional activities e.g. Prize award.

  • Publication number: 20120305520
Abstract: A crown cap that may use less steel than a conventional crown cap is disclosed. A crown cap comprises a shell formed of an increased hardness, including a peripheral skirt, a round panel integrally formed with the skirt, the panel including one to three radially symmetric grooves formed therein, each groove spaced apart from a contact portion of the panel that is adapted for contacting the rim of a bottle upon application of the crown cap onto the bottle, and a liner located on the underside of the panel. The radially symmetric grooves may be circular.

  • Patent number: 8322549
Abstract: A bottle sealed with a crown cap that has a soft feel during removal of the crown cap from the bottle is provided. Such a bottle may include a body and a neck extending up from the body. The neck may include a threaded portion, and a crimped crown cap may be removeably affixed onto the threaded portion. The crimped crown cap may include a circular top member, and a skirt depending downwardly from a periphery of the top member. The skirt may include alternating flutes and lands that are configured such that recesses are formed in a majority of the flutes. Preferably a majority of the recesses contact the threaded portion of the bottle neck. Because of the recesses formed in the flutes, the crown cap may have a soft feel during removal of the crown cap from the bottle.

  • Patent number: 8322177
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and tooling suitable for handling closure blanks (5) having an external radius (6) at their cut edge at production speeds of about (1200) closures per minute. The external radius (6) limits formation of “angel hair” (a common problem in metal closure production). However, reversing the external radius causes a problem, when producing metal closures having a conventional inward curl at their peripheral edge. Accordingly, the invention proposes a modified curling rail (40) having a first portion (41) to uncurl the external curl (6) on the closure blank (5) and a second portion (45) to urge the straightened side wall of the closure blank (5) towards an inward curl.

  • Publication number: 20120269934
Abstract: The present invention concerns a full aperture beverage end (14) having a centre panel (30), a countersink (22) surrounding the centre panel (30), a main score (50) arranged in proximity to the countersink (22) to define a removeable aperture panel (54) and a vent score (46). The beverage end (14) is adapted for use with products that are pressurised to over 30 psi (207 kPa) when opened, and during opening the vent score (46) is adapted to sever first, controlling the pressure differential between the external surface and internal surface of the centre panel (30), thereby allowing the main score (50) to tear in a controlled and reliable manner.

  • Patent number: 8286456
Abstract: An apparatus and method for transferring compressed air between machine elements uses a rotary manifold (110) in which an orifice restrictor (140) is provided between the air supply (115), between each piston (125) and shoe (130). The orifice restrictors (140) meter volumetric flow rate during loading and/or unloading cans from the apparatus, thereby optimised compressed air consumption.

  • Patent number: 8245551
Abstract: A transfer turret assembly is provided for transferring can bodies between process stations in a can necking machine. The transfer turret assembly includes a rotatable transfer starwheel. A plurality of pockets is formed in the starwheel that can each receive a can body. The turret assembly includes a vacuum assembly having a first zone that is under vacuum and a second zone separated from the first region by a boundary. The first zone vacuum retention force to vacuum ports formed in the pockets to retain the can bodies within the pockets. The boundary between the first zone and the second zone is adjustable to correspondingly adjust the vacuum retention force according to desired starwheel rotation speed.

  • Patent number: 8240501
Abstract: A closure for a food can including a foil end panel bonded to an intermediate ring which is fixed to the can body. The foil panel comprises a diaphragm having a centre panel which included at least one concentric bead. The profile of this beaded panel is selected so that its downward position is no greater than the lowest point of the intermediate ring. The provision of the bead(s) reduces pressure differences experienced by the diaphragm, particularly during processing of the can contents, due to the volume increase available from the beads.

  • Publication number: 20120193361
Abstract: A can lid of a can provided with an easily openable opening means is disclosed wherein the can lid is equipped with a can lid which is fastened by winding tightly on the can main body and the top end opening of the can main body, a score section installed around the territory of the prearranged opening area and a tab for severing the score section. In the can lid, there is formed a protrusion protruding upward from the can lid in front of the can opening during manufacturing of the can lid, in which it is a collapsing protrusion where the protrusion elastically deforms into the can main body by depressing motion of the user and thereby enables forming of a concave section for easy insertion of the user's finger.

  • Publication number: 20120175376
Abstract: A can end having a countersink bead, an inclined chuck wall and a strong seam, resists distortion from its circular profile when subjected to thermal processing or when packaging carbonated beverages. This high hoop strength affects the manner in which the can end ultimately fails when placed under extreme abuse conditions, even if buckle pressure performance is within industry specified standards. The can end of the invention has control features introduced which control the failure mode whilst maintaining specified buckle pressure performance. In one embodiment, the can end has a two part wall and a control feature that comprises expansion of the countersink bead to act as a trigger for local peaking, together with a groove in the chuck wall which prevents the peaking force from being concentrated at a single point which could result in leaking by the production of a pin hole.

  • Patent number: 8210377
Abstract: Metal closure components and methods for making the same are provided. The closures may be formed from a metal sheet having a pre-formed polymer film adhered on at least one face. A circular blank may be cut from the sheet, such that the blank may have a circular “raw” cut edge unprotected by the polymer film. The metal blank may then be formed such that the cut edged may be embedded into the film.

  • Patent number: 8191726
Abstract: A method of making an easy open end for a container includes steps of providing a can end blank having an end panel and forming the can end blank in a series of forming operations that are performed with specialized and unique tooling. The can end is preferably shaped during the forming operations so that a major portion of the end panel is curved. Specifically, the curvature is preferably such that a top surface of the major portion is generally concave and a bottom surface of the major portion is generally convex. The end panel is also preferably shaped and constructed so that the curved major portion will invert in shape upon the application of a sufficient predetermined pressure differential between the top and bottom surfaces. A method of testing a fill level of a sealed container is performed in reliance on this “cricketing” or “oil canning” effect.
