  • Publication number: 20120118889
Abstract: A sheet metal lid (1) for fixing to a container body, the lid (1) comprising a centre panel (2) surrounded by a seaming portion (4), which is adapted to be joined to the periphery of the container body after it has been filled with a product. The centre panel (2) defines an aperture (7) through which the product may be dispensed from the container. The aperture (7) is designed to accommodate a separate closure and the cut edge of the aperture (7) is curled to protect a user from cuts and to provide an aperture curl, which engages with the separate closure provide a fluid tight seal. The closure moves relative to the centre panel between a closed position, in which the aperture and the closure together form a fluid-tight seal, and an open position, in which the seal is broken and the closure moves relative to the centre panel to open at least part of the aperture.

  • Patent number: 8177092
Abstract: An easy open end for a pressurized food container, having an end panel and a conventional aperture score, surrounding the periphery of an aperture through which the contents of the container may be dispensed. A tab is provided to facilitate easy opening of the aperture. The easy open end also includes a vent score, which is arranged to rupture before the main aperture score, to vent the internal pressure in the container, before the container is opened. The end panel and/or tab also defines a shield to prevent the egress of product from the vent opening, when the vent score is severed.

  • Publication number: 20120091093
Abstract: An apparatus and method for the manufacture of closures, which are used for closing containers such as glass jars for food. During manufacture, it is essential that sealing compound is prevented from ingress onto the centre of the closure as such ingress could lead to possible contamination of the food. The sealing apparatus and, in particular, the sealing punch of the present invention have features which achieve this control.

  • Patent number: 8157119
Abstract: A can end having a countersink bead, an inclined chuck wall and a strong seam, resists distortion from its circular profile when subjected to thermal processing or when packaging carbonated beverages. This high hoop strength affects the manner in which the can end ultimately fails when placed under extreme abuse conditions, even if buckle pressure performance is within industry specified standards. The can end of the invention has control features introduced which control the failure mode whilst maintaining specified buckle pressure performance. In one embodiment, the can end has a two part wall and a control feature that comprises expansion of the countersink bead to act as a trigger for local peaking, together with a groove in the chuck wall which prevents the peaking force from being concentrated at a single point which could result in leaking by the production of a pin hole.

  • Publication number: 20120074157
Abstract: A closure assembly comprising a two-part closure having a metal panel or disc (2) and a ring (3), and a container such as a glass jar (20). The ring (3) is substantially cylindrical with an axially upwardly extending sidewall and has a radially inwardly extending lower edge. The jar (20) terminates in a radially outwardly extending beaded rim (16) and the disc (2) has a curled circumference (8) such that this curl (8) co-operates with the beaded rim (16) of the container to provide a primary seal. In one example, in a metal ring (3), the lower edge is curled with equally spaced lugs (13) on the skirt wall. In a plastic ring, the upper rim feature may be omitted.

  • Publication number: 20120060620
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for investigating the statistical variability of an axial load gauge. The device is inserted into an axial load gauge and a load is gradually applied. At a preset load, a mechanism within the device controllably collapses and the applied load is safely transmitted through the structure of the device. A comparison of the load measured on the device load cell against that measured on the gauge load cell facilitates calculation of the repeatability and reproducibility of the axial load gauge. The test is non-destructible and highly repeatable; it permits comparison of load measurements made on different axial load gauge types and in different factories.

  • Patent number: 8123451
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a closure in which the closure includes a peelable panel with integral tab folded over the panel. The apparatus includes upper and lower reform tools, the upper reform tool having a tab relief feature and local scallops at each end of the tab relief. When reform tools move together for reforming, the tab relief feature is positioned over the tab fold and the scallops at the ends of the fold. As a result crushing and fracture of the tab during reforming is avoided.

  • Publication number: 20120043325
Abstract: The invention is an easily openable (1) can end which provides an improved way of providing finger access under the tab for a consumer. A can end is disclosed having an end pane (2)1, the end panel including a moveable portion (7) on which the tab is mounted. Finger access is provided by the moveable portion being moveable from a predetermined first state to a predetermined second state to thereby displace the handle of the tab away from the end panel and define a gap between the handle of the tab and the end panel suitable for finger access by a user.

  • Patent number: 8113375
Abstract: A can lid of a can provided with an easily openable opening means is disclosed wherein the can lid is equipped with a can lid which is fastened by winding tightly on the can main body and the top end opening of the can main body, a score section installed around the territory of the prearranged opening area and a tab for severing the score section. In the can lid, there is formed a protrusion protruding upward from the can lid in front of the can opening during manufacturing of the can lid, in which it is a collapsing protrusion where the protrusion elastically deforms into the can main body by depressing motion of the user and thereby enables forming of a concave section for easy insertion of the user's finger.

  • Patent number: 8096156
Abstract: Apparatus and method for forming (e.g. die necking) open ends of open-ended metal container bodies. An exemplary embodiment provides a number of movable holders for container bodies that move the container bodies along a path extending through the apparatus. A motor advances the holders and container bodies along the path in steps with pauses between each step. Each step advances one or more container bodies (and preferably two or more). One or more groups of work stations positioned adjacent to the path provides tool sets for carrying out a forming operation on one (and preferably two or more) container bodies simultaneously. Individual container bodies, or more preferably groups of two or more, are subjected to one or more forming operations during passage along the path (preferably the periphery of one or more star wheels).

  • Patent number: 8091403
Abstract: A bodymaker ram attachment has a screwed locator (60), which is fastened to a slide block (70) of the bodymaker and can be aligned to the machine. A new ram with an internal thread and location diameter is screwed onto the locator. A clamp ring (65) tightens a locking element (80) so as to fix the ram (50) to the locator (60) when screws (68), which fasten the clamp ring to the locator, are tightened. The advantage of this new attachment is that the ram can be removed quickly by loosening the clamp ring and locking element then unscrewing the ram from the locator. The ram can then be removed and replaced by sliding through the front of the machine without the need for further disassembly.

  • Publication number: 20110308202
Abstract: An easily openable can end (1) is disclosed including an end panel (2), a score line (3) formed in the end panel to define a prearranged opening area, a tab (10), the tab having a handle (12), tab securing means (20) for securing the tab to the end panel. In particular, the end panel of the can end is provided with at least one moveable portion (7) contactable with the lower surface of the tab at a location between the tab securing means and the end of the handle of the tab, the moveable portion being deformable upwardly under influence of pressure (p) to push against the lower surface of the tab and thereby incline (?) the handle of the tab away from the end panel to define a gap (d2) under the tab for finger access by a user. Also disclosed are various methods by which the pressure may be induced into a container incorporating the easily openable can end.
