Abstract: A motor vehicle has a rear-end impact warning device, which determines at least the distance to a following vehicle from the backscatter of a signal by means of a surroundings sensor system which is arranged at the rear of the vehicle. The rear-end impact warning device outputs light signals in a situation-dependent flashing mode by means of lights (e.g., brake lights) at the rear in order to provide the traffic behind with a warning of a rear-end impact if a following vehicle approaches to a critical distance. A braking process is sensed by means of a deceleration-sensing means, and a brake flashing mode is predefined if a vehicle approaches to a critical distance and at the same time a braking process is occurring.

  • Publication number: 20090132109
Abstract: A method and a device are provided for detecting when the driver of a motor vehicle becomes inattentive. A steering inactivity phase and a subsequent steering action are detected in this context. A steering inactivity phase is detected if the absolute value of the steering wheel angle, of its change over time, or both, during a predefined time threshold value, does not exceed a first threshold value. A steering action is detected if the absolute value of the steering wheel angle, of its change over time, or both, exceeds a second threshold value. The first threshold value and the second threshold value are modified in a driver-specific fashion.

  • Patent number: 7533646
Abstract: The invention relates to a balancing shaft for an internal combustion engine and to a method for the production thereof. In this case, the balancing shaft consists of a tubular hollow body and contains a balancing weight and also functional elements arranged on the hollow body. In order to design a balancing shaft in as simple a manner as possible, which balancing shaft is designed to save construction space and in which the adequate balancing weight is arranged at the suitable location in accordance with the requirements, it is proposed that the balancing weight be arranged on the outer circumference of the hollow body and that it be fastened there.

  • Patent number: 7533718
Abstract: An air-conditioning device and an air conditioning method make it possible to reduce the problem that, on entry in a tunnel with a warm internal temperature, in the case of otherwise cold outside temperatures as a result of which, inter alia, the vehicle windowpanes and exterior mirror surfaces are cooled, this cold windowpane and exterior mirror surfaces, the surface temperature of which is lower than the dew-point temperature of the warm air in the tunnel interior, immediately fog up, since the absolute humidity on the surface then corresponds to more than 100% relative humidity. The air-conditioning device according to the invention and the air-conditioning method according to the invention use data supplied by already existing sensors and relating to the ambient weather, for example temperature data from an outside temperature sensor and moisture data from a dew-point sensor, in order to detect weather which is critical to this fogging.

  • Patent number: 7534511
Abstract: Improvements in startup time for an electrochemical fuel cell system from freezing and sub-freezing temperatures are obtained by utilizing an insulated fuel cell stack in combination with an thermal control subsystem. Temperature of the insulated electrochemical fuel cell stack, as well as temperature of the ambient environment, are monitored and a heating fluid is heated by thermal transfer with the environment under appropriate thermal conditions. The heated fluid is then passed to the insulated fuel cell in order to increase the temperature of the same, typically to a temperature at or near the temperature of the ambient environment. In this manner, ambient heat from the environment is utilized to increase the temperature of the insulated fuel cell stack, thus improving conditions for subsequent cold start of the insulated fuel cell stack.

  • Patent number: 7530234
Abstract: A method for the air conditioning of a vehicle interior as a function of incident solar radiation. In a vehicle with, for example, a four-zone air conditioning system, the incident solar radiation is detected by means of sensor elements assigned to the various air conditioning zones in the vehicle and is used for regulating the air conditioning capacity. In order to avoid faulty regulation due to a detected incident solar radiation which does not influence or only slightly influences the passengers because of perpendicular incident radiation, for example, on the roof, the hood and the trunk lid, the incident radiation direction is determined by means of the sensor elements and the regulation of the air conditioning capacity is adapted correspondingly, so that the situation of too intensive cooling, for example in the case of perpendicular radiation on the vehicle roof, is avoided.

  • Publication number: 20090118918
Abstract: A method for improving drivability of the powertrain system having an accelerator control includes determining a first transmission input speed having an associated first power loss and operating said transmission using said first transmission input speed. An operational parameter relating to said accelerator control is determined and a second transmission input speed responsive to said operational parameter and having an associated second power loss is determined. The value of at least one of said first and second power loss is biased based on said operational parameter. The first power loss is compared to said second power loss subsequent to the biasing. A third transmission input speed is determined and the transmission is operated using the third transmission input speed.
