    Abstract: A polymer solid electrolyte obtained by blending (1) a polyether copolymer having a main chain derived form ethylene oxide and an oligooxyethylene side chain, (2) an electrolyte salt compound, and (3) a plasticizer of an aprotic organic solvent or a derivative or metal salt of a polyalkylene glycol having a number-average molecular weight of 200 to 5,000 or a metal salt of the derivative is superior in ionic conductivity and also superior in processability, moldability and mechanical strength to a conventional solid electrolyte. A secondary battery is constructed by using the polymer solid electrolyte in combination with a lithium metal negative electrode and a lithium cobaltate positive electrode.

    Abstract: A process for preparing easily and economically a 1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol compound in a racemic form or an optically active form with high purity and in high yield.The process comprises reacting an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an alcohol or a carboxylic acid with a halogenomethyl-1,3-dioxolane which is prepared by acetalizing a halogeno-1,2-propanediol of a formula (1) wherein X is a halogen atom, in an acid catalyst to conduct esterification or etherification, and then hydrolyzing the ester group and hydrogenolyzing the ether group to prepare a 1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol compound of a formula (5) wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are hydrogen atom, alkyl having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or phenyl, and R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may form a cycloalkyl ring having 3 to 6 carbon atoms with the adjacent carbon atoms.

    Abstract: An improved process for producing a catechol derivative (1) useful as a intermediate of pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, being shown by the following reaction scheme. The process is characterized in that formulation in the first step is carried out in the two stages, that is, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a tin catalyst at 60-85.degree. C. to a conversion of 30 to 80% and then is completed at 95-105.degree. C. to produce a salicylaldehyde derivative (3) in a high yield and a high selectivity. Thereby, the objective catechol derivative (1) can be obtained in a high yield and with a high purity. ##STR1## In the above formula, R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, halogen atom, allyl, or aryl, and R.sup.1 is a hydroxy protective group.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a cyclic sulfide compound represented by a general formula (I) ##STR1## (where R.sup.1 represents --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --O--CH.sub.2 --, --CH.sub.2 --O--, or --CH.sub.2 --S--). According to this invention, a novel cyclic sulfide compound which gives high refractive index and high Abbe number can be obtained. The polymerizable compositions for manufacturing optical products with this compound as their main component can be readily molded into plastic lenses which give superhigh refractive indices and high Abbe numbers or those which give high refractive indices and high Abbe number with low sp.grs. in addition thereto. The castings obtained from said polymerizable compositions are useful as plastic lenses for glasses, manifesting optical uniformity and being excellent in processability, transparency, and thermal, impact and light resistance.
