  • Patent number: 6718924
Abstract: A camshaft assembly and method of making a camshaft assembly is disclosed. Each of the cams includes a lobe boss portion that defines the cam lift profile, and a base portion that provides a surface for joining the cam to the shaft. In contrast to conventional ring-type cams, the base portion of the cam does not circumscribe the outer surface of the shaft, but instead extends only part way around the circumference or periphery of the shaft. This allows for radial mounting of the cams at virtually any timing angle, and permits the use of simple techniques for joining the cams to the shaft, including capacitance discharge welding. It is emphasized that this abstract is provided to comply with the rules requiring an abstract that will allow a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the technical disclosure. It is submitted with the understanding that it will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims. 37 CFR 1.72(b).

  • Patent number: 6719311
Abstract: A steering assembly is provided for steering a pair of vehicle wheels. The assembly includes a tie rod assembly having first and second tie rods. Each of the tie rods has an inboard end and an outboard end. The inboard ends may be coupled to the output member of a steering gear or they may be supported on a movable support member. The outboard ends are coupled to the vehicle wheels and, in particular, to tie rod arms extending from steering knuckles. The inboard ends of the tie rods are positioned forward of the outboard ends of the tie rods relative to the forward direction of vehicle travel when the vehicle wheels are facing forward. As a result, the effective length of the tie rod assembly increases as the turn angle of the vehicle wheels increases thereby reducing toe out of the vehicle wheels and tire wear and allowing sufficient clearance with wheel and brake components including brake drums found in conventional drum brake systems.

  • Patent number: 6705148
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming the free end of a length of metal foil wrap corrugated tubing, in which a free end of the tubing is first crimped against a mandrel, then folded to extend radially inwardly, then folded further to extend axially inwardly within the inside diameter of the tubing end, and then compacted axially to bring the corrugations into facing abutment with each other and tighten the formed end of the tubing against unwrapping of the metal foil. The crimping operation involves closure of a plurality of jaws around the free end of the tubing and deforming the tubing end against a tapering surface on an internal mandrel. The tubing is then gripped between jaws that form a radially indented channel in the periphery of the tubing, both to enhance the clamping action of the jaws and to isolate the formed end of the tubing from the remainder of the tubing.

  • Patent number: 6701775
Abstract: Sensor apparatus for a multiple layer steel (MLS) cylinder head gasket measures combustion pressures for detecting engine conditions. A membrane is positioned at one end of an elongated metal tube, and the membrane end of the tube engages a cylinder bore boundary. A fiber optical sensor apparatus is fixed within the tube, and communicates with cyclic combustion events via the membrane. In one disclosed embodiment, optical wires from sensor apparatus situated at each engine bore are bundled into a common groove machined into an extended spacer layer radially outwardly of the conventional boundary of the gasket. The tube protects the sensor apparatus from damage of sealing stress on the gasket, and particularly at the bore perimeter. Each tube lies in a separate groove in the spacer layer that terminates at the bore boundary. A converter changes optical signals received from the apparatus into electrical signals for transmittal to a controller.

  • Patent number: 6685197
Abstract: A valve cover gasket has a perforated central core of metal including protrusions extending from planar sides of the core. Silk screened on each side of the core is a silicone foam rubber layer adapted to replace traditional cork gasket structures used for same purpose. The silicone rubber layers include a foaming agent that causes the material to expand during an oven-curing period. The amount of expansion of the silicone rubber coating is up to three times the thickness of the coating originally applied. As disclosed, the oven cure is for approximately 10 minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The protrusions prevent the silicone rubber material from being fully compressed; the protrusions are designed not to flatten under normal gasket compression loads. The peaks of the protrusions act as compression loads stops to limit amount of permissible compression of the silicone rubber layers.

  • Patent number: 6681890
Abstract: An improved heat shield provides thermal insulation and reduced noise transmission of vehicular engine components, including exhaust manifolds. The structure has three layers; an outer structural metal layer, a center insulation layer to isolate heat and dampen noise, and an inner metal layer directly adjacent the shielded component for reflecting heat back to the shielded component. The heat shield is attached by bolts to the shielded component. In the described embodiment, the volume of the insulation layer is expanded by approximately 15 to 20 percent over conventional shields to produce a softer, thicker material having a lower density but unchanged mass. The invention provides a technique to achieve desired thickness and density in insulation layers via modal finite element analysis. The relatively thicker heat shield more effectively absorbs vibration and attenuates noise without increase in mass. In the described embodiment, the layer contains cellulose, diatomaceous earth, talc, and fiberglass.
