Abstract: A finely-divided cerium metal/metalloid oxide mixture, containing pyrogenically produced metal/metalloid oxide and 0.001 to 95 wt. % cerium oxide, has a specific surface area between 10 and 400 m.sup.2 /g. The mixture is produced by mixing pyrogenically produced metal/metalloid oxide, having a specific surface area between 30 and 400 m.sup.2 /g, with a cerium compound decomposable to an oxide at elevated temperature, the cerium compound being thermally decomposed to the oxide. The cerium oxide-metal/metalloid oxide mixture can be used as a polishing agent or filler.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of 1,1,3-trialkoxypropane by acid-catalyzed reaction of acrolein with a C.sub.1 to C.sub.6 alcohol, which can be carried out well on a large scale and leads to a higher selectivity. The process involves (a) the reaction, in the presence of a solid acid catalyst which is insoluble in the reaction mixture, (b) a partial neutralization of the reaction mixture, using an amine or basic ion exchanger, and (c) specific recovery by distillation of the reaction mixture and recirculation of fractions containing useful materials; aqueous fractions containing recyclable useful materials are largely dehydrated by pervaporation prior to being recirculated.

Abstract: A process for continuous production of methyl mercaptan by catalytic reaction of methanol and hydrogen sulfide. Significant improvements in the pretreatment of the feed gas mixture and in utilization of the heat of reaction and the heat content of the product gas mixture. The energy required to vaporize the methanol is derived partly from utilization of the heat of compression of the hydrogen sulfide gas and from the heat content of the product gas leaving the reactor. Abstract: The invention is relates to a method of producing aryl-substituted, amino-acylated phosphonic-acid derivatives with the aid of metal complexes of chiral amphiphilic ligands in that according to the invention .alpha.-N-acyl-protected, .beta.-substituted alkene phosphone derivatives are asymmetrically hydrogenated in the presence of a chiral rhodium catalyst in a solvent or a suspension. Abstract: A process for separating the product gas mixture from the catalytic synthesis of methyl mercaptan. Because of improved separation of the product gas mixture into its components, less hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan are lost in discharging the inert gases than in the known process. Abstract: A porous gas diffusion electrode for membrane fuel cells on an ion-conducting polymer. Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the production of primary and/or secondary amines from oxo compounds by catalytic imination of the oxo compound with ammonia or a primary amine and subsequent hydrogenation. Imination proceeds according to the invention in the presence of a novel imination catalyst, namely an organopolysiloxane containing sulphonate groups. This imination catalyst is distinguished by elevated activity. The process is in particular suitable for the production of isophorone diamine from isophorone nitrile, wherein it has proved possible to reduce the content of secondary products and to increase yield.
