    Abstract: An electric power steering control system comprising: an electric motor disposed in a vehicle to apply torque to a steerable wheel; a torque sensor disposed in the vehicle for detecting a steering wheel torque and generating a torque signal indicative thereof; a vehicle speed sensor, the vehicle speed sensor generating a vehicle speed signal; a controller coupled to the torque sensor, the vehicle speed sensor and the electric motor. The controller generates a scheduled compensated torque command to the electric motor. The scheduled compensated torque command is based on at least one of: a torque command signal responsive to the torque signal; a compensated torque command signal; and a blend of the torque command signal and the compensated torque command signal. At least one of the torque command signal, the compensated torque command signal and the blend is based the vehicle speed signal.

    Abstract: A vehicle navigation system provides information relating to a list of intersections or other points of interest located ahead of a vehicle relative to a heading vector of the vehicle. The vehicle navigation system uses information about the current location of the vehicle and the heading vector in connection with a navigation database to identify a list of the intersections or other points of interest along the current street. The vehicle navigation system presents this information to an occupant of the vehicle. As the vehicle progresses and makes turn maneuvers, the navigation system updates the list of intersections or other points of interest that the vehicle is approaching. The occupant can receive information regarding points of interest without needing to enter a planned destination beforehand. In addition, the occupant can determine the location of the vehicle relative to the surrounding area without the clutter of irrelevant map details.

    Abstract: The subject invention detects the presence of an ozone reducing coating on an automotive radiator of the type having spaced fins presenting electromagnetic surface properties different than the electromagnetic surface properties of the coating. In accordance with the subject invention light rays are emitted or reflected off the coating on the fins to a detector and a comparator compares these light rays to a predetermined benchmark to provide a signal in response to the detected light rays crossing the benchmark. In a species, a second detector is employed to detect rays from an un-coated section to establish the benchmark.

    Abstract: A process and electronic assembly for conducting heat from a semiconductor circuit device mounted to a substrate. The substrate is supported by a housing member equipped with a heat-conductive member. A surface of the device opposite the substrate is bonded to the heat-conductive member with a solder joint formed of indium and optionally one or more alloying constituents that increase the melting temperature of the solder joint above that of indium. The housing member, substrate, and device are assembled so that an indium-containing solder material is present between the heat-conductive member and the surface of the device opposite the substrate. The solder material is then reflowed to form the solder joint. The alloying constituent(s) are preferably introduced into the solder joint during reflow.

    Abstract: A temperature sensor includes a membrane supported by a substrate and a circuit having elements for a substrate electrical resistance indicative of the temperature of a substrate and a membrane electrical resistance indicative of the temperature of a membrane. The substrate resistance and the membrane resistance are arranged in a bridge configuration to facilitate measurement of a differential voltage responsive to temperature change. The resulting temperature signal includes a first varying portion and a second varying portion. A controller receives a temperature signal from sensor, eliminates the second varying portion and generates a temperature value based on the based on the first varying portion. In this manner, the sensor provides an improved, fast response to changes in the surrounding temperature.

The threshold adjustments effectively increase the separation between the detected weight and the threshold, minimizing oscillation of the determined characterization following an initial occupant characterization. A learning routine gradually adjusts the threshold up to a predefined maximum adjustment so long as the detected weight is within a tolerance or hysteresis band, or a locking routine produces a step change adjustment of the threshold when the detected weight is outside the tolerance or hysteresis band for at least a predefined time.

A higher reduction ratio is achieved which enables improved efficiency. The present invention reduces floor space requirements as the forming operation may be completed on a single machine.

The guide head (32, 132) is affixed to the end of the lower steering shaft (20, 120) through a sheer member (35) which is created by injecting a fluidic plastic material (35) through injection ports (34) so that the plastic forms in injection grooves (36). Once solidified, the plastic material (35) securely affixes the guide head (32, 132) in an operative position on the end of the lower steering shaft (20, 120).

    Abstract: An antenna module incorporates a microstrip patch antenna and a mast antenna in an at least substantially concentric arrangement for communicating signals in multiple communication bands. The output signals from the microstrip patch antenna and the mast antenna are output via a single RF cable. The antenna module can be used to communicate signals in multiple communication bands, including both satellite and terrestrial communications. The antenna module conserves space, while avoiding unacceptable distortion of radiation patterns for satellite services. In addition, the mast antenna can be implemented using a thinner, more flexible construction than certain conventional solutions. Further, providing the outputs from the antennas via a single RF cable may facilitate collocating tuners for multiple communication services, resulting in considerable size and cost savings by using a single set of RF cables and connectors.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for applying a kinetic spray coating of powder particles onto a substrate covered in a plastic-type material without first removing the plastic-type material. In one use of the process a mask is used to enable a single kinetic spray pass to both remove the plastic covering and bind particles having average nominal diameters of from 60 to 250 microns to the underlying substrate. In another use of the process the particles have an average nominal diameter of from 250 to 1400 microns and the use of a mask is optional because the particles can penetrate the plastic material and bind directly to the substrate. The process finds special use in forming electrical connections or solderable pads anywhere along the length of a flexible circuit.

    Abstract: A steering column assembly for a motor vehicle is adjustable in both rake and telescope directions and then locked in a convenient setting by a driver. The locking mechanism for the telescope and rake adjust is motor actuated in response to activation of a toggle switch. The motor can be proximate or remote from the locking mechanism and the steering column assembly. A transmission operates on a rotating cam principal which alternately cycles a clamp of the locking mechanism between locked and unlocked conditions. A drive shaft extends between the motor and the locking mechanism and can be either rigid or flexible. Locking the steering column assembly in an adjusted position can be accomplished either by compressing a capsule bracket against a compression bracket, or via interlocking engagement of pawls with corresponding teeth in respective slots in the capsule and compression brackets.

    Abstract: An anti-rotation guide for preventing rotation of a roller follower valve lifter in an internal combustion engine. The guide has an outer surface for engaging an engine bore and an inner surface for slidably receiving the lifter. One end of the guide includes an anti-rotation feature for cooperating with a mating feature on the lifter, preferably flats although other configurations are contemplated within the scope of the invention. The anti-rotation feature may take any of a plurality of shapes, including but not limited to an arm and tang, a flap, and an orifice flat. The guide is installed from an opening in the engine bore proximate a camshaft disposed in the engine block. The cooperating features prevent axial rotation of a lifter within the sleeve but do not inhibit axial or reciprocal motion of the lifter.

    Abstract: A vehicular steering column assembly (16) comprises a support bracket (26) which is joined to an outer, non-rotating sleeve (22). A release capsule (30) is releasably joined to a mounting surface (28) of the support bracket (26) via a plurality of spherical bodies (56) whose protruding crowns (52) are seated in corresponding longitudinally-extending furrows (54) in the release capsule (30). Upon the application of sufficient force to the steering column (16), such as during a collision, the support bracket (26) is urged out of engagement with the release capsule (30) with the respective furrows (54) sliding over the crowns (52). The sliding engagement between the crowns (52) and the furrows (54) can be adjusted to establish a highly predictable and consistent release force and which is capable of increasing the frequency value for the steering column (16).
