  • Patent number: 6948312
Abstract: A high-performance piston core including a first piston cylinder and a second piston cylinder, with a piston center longitudinally disposed between and magnetically coupling the first piston cylinder and the second piston cylinder. The piston center is made of high-performance magnetic material, such as Cobalt steel (CoFe), Silicon steel (SiFe), Vanadium/Cobalt steel (Permendur), alloys thereof, or the like. The high-performance magnetic materials exhibit high magnetic permeability and reduce the magnetic reluctance of flux bottlenecks. In addition, high-performance magnetic materials typically saturate at a higher flux density than the conventional magnetic materials. The first piston cylinder and the second piston cylinder can be made of conventional magnetic material, such as low-carbon steel. The first piston cylinder can include a ring disposed about an end, where the end is longitudinally attached and magnetically coupled to the piston center.

  • Patent number: 6949282
Abstract: The present invention provides contoured crushable composite structural members and methods for making the same. The contoured structural members comprise composite materials sandwiching a support or stabilizing structure. The contoured structure can be provided by tube rolling (or roll wrapping) the composite materials and the support structure together and then, if necessary, bonding them or connecting them. The structural members are made crushable by incorporating an initiator into the structures of the members. With a contoured, crushable, and generally non-flat structure, applications for the structural members of the present invention are nearly limitless.

  • Patent number: 6949907
Abstract: An apparatus including a stepper motor for actuating a moveable element of the apparatus. The maximum torque that can be generated at each step is a function of the voltage supplied to the motor. In some applications, however, torque greater than the nominal maximum may be required for brief periods. Under such conditions, the need for greater torque is sensed and a controller supplies a higher voltage to the motor, thereby increasing temporarily the output torque. When increased torque is no longer required, the voltage is reduced to nominal. The invention is useful, for example, for extending the range of a stepper motor actuator for an intake air control valve in a fuel cell assembly.

  • Patent number: 6948479
Abstract: A hydraulic pulsation damper system for installation into an otherwise rigid hydraulic system to absorb and extinguish pressure pulsations being transmitted through the system by hydraulic fluid contained therein. The system is useful in suppressing pulsations in automotive fuel lines supplying fuel to fuel injection systems. The system includes fuel-conducting tubing made of flexible, non-permeable material that includes a convoluted central portion capable of expanding and contracting in response to pulsations in the fuel. Resilient foam is molded around the convoluted portion for controlling expansion of the convolutions. The foam and convoluted tubing are contained within a housing made from a larger-diameter hose having ends sealed as by swaged connectors. The damper system may be bent to accommodate installation with a fuel line in an engine and can conveniently provide a sound-deadening link in the fuel line of a vehicle between a body-mounted portion and an engine-mounted portion thereof.

  • Patent number: 6950029
Abstract: An airflow blockage detection apparatus for a permanent split-capacitor single-phase cooling fan motor measures and compares electrical currents in main and auxiliary windings of the motor to detect airflow blockage. Main and auxiliary current sensors detect AC currents in the main and auxiliary windings, respectively, and a blockage detection circuit forms a difference between the detected currents. An airflow blockage alarm is activated when the current difference exceeds a specified setpoint indicative of abnormally low airflow.

  • Patent number: 6948467
Abstract: A rotor-locking mechanism for a vane-type camshaft phaser. A locking pin is disposed in the rotor and is permitted to travel into a well in either the rear cover or the front cover of the phaser. The pin is urged into the well by a return spring, and the end of the pin end is exposed to oil pressure for unlocking the pin. A first channel is provided between the advance-oil feed and the end of the pin, and a second channel is provided between the retard-oil feed and the end of the pin. The channels may be formed in either of the covers. The pin is unlocked whenever a predetermined oil pressure is exceeded in either the advance or retard oil feeds, permitting the pin to be unlocked through most modes of engine operation and to be locked only under specific predetermined low-pressure conditions, such as during engine starting.

  • Patent number: 6946793
Abstract: A non-thermal plasma reactor and method for preparing same for conversion of exhaust gas constituents is prepared from an extruded monolith comprising a plurality of conductive and exhaust channels separated by substantially planar dielectric barriers. Conductive material printed onto selected monolith channels form the conductive channels, which are connected along bus paths to form an alternating sequence of polarity, separated by exhaust channels. Conductive channels and channels not selected for exhaust flow are plugged to exclude exhaust gases and to prevent electrical leakage. During operation, exhaust gas flows through exhaust channels and is treated by the high voltage alternating current flowing through the conductive channels. The substantially planar dielectric barriers provide a uniform electrical response throughout the exhaust channels.

  • Patent number: 6945691
Abstract: A heat-conducting element having known length D is disposed at a first end in a first region having a first temperature T1 to be inferred. The second end of the element is disposed in a second region having a measureable second temperature T2 different from the first temperature. The element is well-insulated between the first and second regions. Heat flows along the element from the higher temperature region to the lower temperature region, and the temperature of the element at any point along the element is proportional to the temperature difference between the two regions and the distance from either one of the regions. By measuring the second temperature and also a third temperature T3 at a point along the element, and knowing accurately the position Dn of that point with respect to the first and second ends of the element, the first temperature can be inferred by proportionality.
